Liskeard Guildhall

Liskeard ( lih-SKARD; Cornish: Lyskerrys) is an ancient stannary and market town in south-east Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of Plymouth, 14 miles (23 km) west of the Devon border, and 12 miles (20 km) east of Bodmin. The Bodmin Moor lies to the north-west of the town. The total population of the town at the 2011 census was 11,366

Caradon was a local government district in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It contained five towns: Callington, Liskeard, Looe, Saltash and Torpoint, and over 80 villages and hamlets within 41 civil parishes. Its District Council was based in Liskeard 50.453°N 4.465°W / 50.453; -4.465. The district was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, by the merger of the boroughs of Liskeard and Saltash with the urban districts of Looe and Torpoint, along with Liskeard Rural District and St Germans Rural District. The district was named after Caradon Hill, the principal landmark of the area, and formerly the site of important copper mines. The district was abolished as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England on 1 April.

Liskeard railway station (Cornish: Lyskerrys) serves the town of Liskeard in Cornwall, England. The station is approximately 18 miles (29 km) west of Plymouth on the Cornish Main Line and 264 miles 71 chains (426.3 km) from London Paddington via Box and Plymouth Millbay. It is the junction for the Looe Valley Line. The railway station is situated approximately 0.5 miles (0.80 km) south-west of Liskeard town centre.

Addington is a residential area of northeast Liskeard, in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is located at grid reference SX 259 651. According to the Post Office the population of the area at the 2011 census was included in the civil parish of North Hill. Addington is on the A390 road from Liskeard to Callington and has its own post office and a fish and chip shop, separate from the main town. Addington was originally a separate settlement but has merged into Liskeard as it grew in population.

Lamellion is a hamlet in Cornwall, England. It is half a mile southwest of Liskeard (where the population for the 2011 census was included.) and nearer to the town is Lamellion Hospital. The hospital building was the work of John Foulston, 1839, and was built as a workhouse.

East Wivelshire and West Wivelshire (usually known merely as East and West) are two of the ancient Hundreds of Cornwall. East and West (Wivelshire) must have originally had a Cornish name but it is not recorded. The name of nearby Lostwithiel has the second element gwydhyow meaning 'trees'; wivel may also be from the Anglo-Saxon personal name Wifel. There are also Anglican deaneries by the same names, but the modern boundaries do not correspond exactly. The area must have formed one hundred originally but had already been divided into two before the Norman Conquest: they are grouped in Domesday under the head manors of Rillaton (East) and Fawton (West). The Cornish names are Ryslegh (East) and Fawy (West). However the suggestion that 'the area must have formed one hundred originally' is disputed by the noted Cornish historian, the Rev. W. M. M. Picken, who believes the names to be derived from the Saxon twi-feald-scir, meaning 'two-fold shire.' All trains on this line have to reverse at Coombe Junction, but very few continue the short distance into the platform to allow passengers to alight or join the train.
