Lippendorf Power Station

Lippendorf is located in the municipality of Neukieritzsch, near Leipzig in Saxony, Germany. The present town of Lippendorf used to be known as the village of Medewitzsch. In 1934, the towns of Medewitzsch, Lippendorf and Spahnsdorf combined to form the new town of Lippendorf. North of town are Böhlen and Zwenkau, to the east is Rotha, to the south is Neukieritzsch and to the west is Russen-KleinstorkwitzThe first record of the village of Lippendorf was in 1378. The character of the place was rural for a long time. Only from the 1920s did the then village develop into an industrial centre, mainly due to the lignite, also called brown coal, formed from naturally compressed peat, found in the area. The first lignite mine in the area was opened in 1924. Böhlen mining started near the north west of the town. The first power station was built in 1925. During World War II bomb attacks on the power station in 1944 and 1945 destroyed parts of the village. In the mid-1960s a second power station was built in the municipality of Spahnsdorf and parts of Lippendorf. The current town was incorporated on 1 January 1973. In 1997 a new lignite-fired power station, the Lippendorf Power Station, was built and the old one was shut down.The town is not far from the rivers of the White Elster and Pleiße. It is also near the Leipzig Bay and includes parts of the conservation area Elsteraue. The nearest large settlements are the city of Leipzig and town of Borna.

Böhlen (German pronunciation: [ˈbøːlən]) is a town in Saxony, Germany, south of Leipzig. Its main features are a small airport and a power plant. It is located in the newly built Neuseenland, the lakes created in former open-pit mining areas.

The Gösel is a river of Saxony, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Pleiße, which it joins in Rötha.

Rötha is a town in the Leipzig district, in Saxony, Germany. It is situated 16 km south of Leipzig. On 1 August 2015 it was expanded with the former municipality Espenhain.

Neukieritzsch is a municipality in the Leipzig district, in Saxony, Germany. On 1 April 2008, the former municipality of Lobstädt was incorporated into Neukieritzsch. On 1 July 2014, the former municipality of Deutzen was incorporated into Neukieritzsch.

Neukieritzsch station is a station on the Leipzig–Hof and the Neukieritzsch–Chemnitz railways, which branches here, in Neukieritzsch in the German state of Saxony. The Neukieritzsch–Pegau railway, which has now been dismantled, also branched off here from 1909 until 1999.

Zwenkau is a town in the district of Leipzig, in Saxony, Germany. Situated between the White Elster and Pleiße rivers, it nestles in the Leipzig Bay and includes parts of the conservation area Elsteraue and Central Germany's Street of Lignite. It is situated within the Central German Metropolitan Region.

Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz is a railway station in Markkleeberg, Germany. The station is located on the Leipzig–Hof railway and the Leipzig-Plagwitz–Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz railway. The train services are operated by Deutsche Bahn. Since December 2013 the station is served by the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland. Bundesautobahn 38 crosses the line over a bridge in the area of the station. The separate suburban tracks (line 6377) end at the southern end of Gaschwitz station and from there to Böhlen there is an additional freight track (line 6378) next to the tracks of the main line.

The United Schleenhain Coal Mine is a coal mine located in Saxony. The mine has coal reserves amounting to 415 million tonnes of lignite, one of the largest coal reserves in Europe and the world and has an annual production of 11 million tonnes of coal.

The Wyhra (in its upper course: Wiera) is a river of Saxony and Thuringia, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Pleiße, which it joins near Lobstädt.

Markkleeberg-Großstädteln is a railway station in Markkleeberg, Germany. The station is located on the Leipzig–Hof railway. The train services are operated by Deutsche Bahn. Since 15 December 2013 the station is served by the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland. The station was opened on 1 November 1907 as Großstädteln. With the integration of Großstädteln into the municipality of Markkleeberg on 1 November 1937, it was renamed Markkleeberg-Großstädteln. From 1879 to the cessation of passenger traffic in 2002, Großstädteln was also a stop on the Leipzig-Plagwitz–Markkleeberg-Gaschwitz railway. It is served by lines S3 and S6.

Magdeborn was a village and a municipality south of Leipzig, Germany. It was in its last form a group of seven villages, named for Magdeborn which consisted only of church, vicary and school, which had served all of them. The name is derived from the castle Medeburu which was first mentioned in 969. Around 1940 a large housing area was added for workers of the brown coal mining in Espenhain. Between 1977 and 1980 Magdeborn had to give way to the mining, after all inhabitants (ca. 3200) had been moved from the end of the 1960s. Its area was added to the municipality of Störmthal.
