Rioja (wine)

Logroño (Spanish: [loˈɣɾoɲo] ) is the capital of the province of La Rioja, situated in northern Spain. Traversed in its northern part by the Ebro River, Logroño has historically been a place of passage, such as the Camino de Santiago. Its borders were disputed between the Iberian kingdoms of Castille, Navarre and Aragon during the Middle Ages. The population of the city in 2021 was 150,808 while the metropolitan area included nearly 200,000 inhabitants. The city is a centre of trade of Rioja wine, for which the area is noted, and manufacturing of wood, metal and textile products.

The Theatre of Bretón de los Herreros (Spanish: Teatro Bretón de los Herreros) is a nineteenth-century theatre located in Logroño, Spain. The theatre has had its present name since 1902 when it was renamed in honour of Manuel Bretón de los Herreros. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1983.

The Co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda (Spanish: Concatedral de Santa María de la Redonda) is a co-cathedral located in Logroño, in La Rioja, Spain.The name "redonda" refers to the rounded shape of an earlier church on the site. It had the status of collegiate church from the 15th century when Logrono became a city. The present building was raised to the rank of cathedral in the 20th century. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño, which has two other cathedrals. The church has two elaborately decorated towers, each containing a set of bells. The sidewall of the church has a clock split into three faces : one each for the hour, minute and second. The entrance to the church is set in an alcove filled with Christian sculptures, protected by high iron gates and netting to prevent people or birds entering. The towers are similarly netted but the famous storks which inhabit Logroño can still nest on the highest ledges.

The Church of San Bartolomé (Spanish: Iglesia de San Bartolomé) is the oldest church of Logroño, Spain. Its construction dates back to the 12th century, so partly preserves Romanesque style in the head and in the initial part of the tower, and continues during the 13th century, with the Gothic style development, building the magnificent arched portal, which contains some Romanesque sculptures that tell the life of saint Bartholomew and other Bible passages. It has been protected by a heritage listing (currently Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1866. The Church of San Bartholomé is located in the Landmark No. 9 on the Way of St. James, a World Heritage Site. It is located 612 km from Santiago de Compostela.

Logroño Railway Station (IATA: LGV) is the central railway station of Logroño, Spain. Commonly referred locally as the RENFE station, the station is part of Adif and high-speed rail systems.

Estadio Las Gaunas is a football stadium in Logroño, La Rioja, Spain. The stadium holds 16,000 spectators and was opened on 28 February 2002. It is the home ground of Segunda División club UD Logroñés, and the women's Primera División team EDF Logroño.

Plaza de Toros de La Ribera is a bullring in Logroño, Spain. It is currently used for bull fighting, with a retractable roof, has also hosted basketball and 2010 Davis Cup tennis. The stadium holds 11,046 spectators. It was opened in 2001.

Palacio de los Deportes de La Rioja is an arena in Logroño, Spain. The arena holds 3,809 people, expandable to 4,500 people with additional seats. It is primarily used for handball and basketball. This is the home arena of CB Ciudad de Logroño and CB Clavijo.

The University of La Rioja (UR) is a public institution of higher education based in Logroño, La Rioja, Spain. Inaugurated during 1992-1993 from various existing schools and colleges, it currently teaches Grades 19 adapted to the European Higher Education, and a varied program of masters, summer courses and courses of Spanish language and culture for foreigners. It has earned the Campus International Excellence for the project "Iberus" presented together with the public universities of Zaragoza, Navarra, and Lledia. The campus of the University of La Rioja is located in Logroño. Teaching, research and culture are activities conducted in the roughly 200,000 square meters it covers. The shield of the University of La Rioja is composed of the initials "U" and "R" removed from the calligraphy of emilianenses codices, written and kept in the Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, considered 'the cradle of the Spanish' and a Heritage Site. In 1996, the University of La Rioja was the first campus to create and teach Spanish in the Bachelor of Oenology, according to the tradition of winemaking in the region, while in 1999 it began offering studies in History and Bachelor of Science Music, the first given at a Spanish public campus entirely through the Internet and is now offered by the Bachelor of Science in Labour and much of the master's program and graduate courses. The staff at the University of La Rioja is composed of about 450 members of teaching and research staff and 250 other members of the Administration and Services. The ratio remains at 15 students per teacher. In eighteen years of history, University of La Rioja has taught more than 14,000 students. The UR is part of Group 9 of Universities, which brings together the nine public campuses that are unique in their autonomous region, and Tordesillas Group, a network of Latin American campus has its origins in the First Meeting of Rectors of Universities in Brazil, Spain and Portugal, which was held in June 2000 for the commemoration of 500 years of Brazil, in the Houses of the Treaty in Tordesillas (Valladolid). In 1999 it received the Medal of the Government of La Rioja, in a ceremony in San Millan de la Cogolla. It runs Dialnet, a bibliographic database.

The International University of La Rioja (UNIR) is a private open university in Spain focused on online education, based in Logroño, La Rioja. Also has presence in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. In December 2019, the institution had more than 45,000 distance learning external students, 12,000 of them overseas students. UNIR offers 37 university degrees, more than 80 master's degrees, 77 proprietary degrees, 16 Advanced Studies and 3 doctoral programmes. The university is composed of six departments (Education, Law, Management and Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health Sciences and Engineering). It also has an Official Language School and a School of Doctoral programmes.
