Little Kentucky River

Prestonville is a home rule-class city located at the confluence of the Ohio and Kentucky rivers in Carroll County, Kentucky, in the United States. It lies across the Kentucky River from Carrollton. As of the 2020 census, Prestonville had a population of 171.

The Kentucky River is a tributary of the Ohio River in Kentucky, United States. The 260-mile (420 km) river and its tributaries drain much of eastern and central Kentucky, passing through the Eastern Coalfield, the Cumberland Mountains, and the Bluegrass region. Its watershed encompasses about 7,000 square miles (18,000 km2), and it supplies drinking water to about one-sixth of the population of the state. The river is no longer navigable above Lock 4 at Frankfort, as concrete bulkheads have been poured behind the upper lock gates of Locks 5–14 to strengthen the dam structures. All fourteen dams are managed by the state-run Kentucky River Authority. The primary importance of the locks today is to maintain a pool that allows the city of Lexington to draw its drinking water from the river. Although the Lexington area receives well over 40 inches (1,000 mm) of precipitation annually, the limestone karst geology of the area allows little natural surface water. The cities of Winchester, Beattyville, Irvine, Richmond, Lancaster, Nicholasville, Harrodsburg, Wilmore, Versailles, Lawrenceburg, and Frankfort also draw water from the river for their municipal water supplies. It is estimated that more than 700,000 people depend on the river for water.

Stone House on Kentucky River is located in Prestonville, Kentucky. It was built in 1835 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 8, 1987. It is located on Kentucky River. It is a five bay, two-story, central passage, dry stone house, about 22 by 46 feet (6.7 m × 14.0 m) in plan, built in about 1835. It has a two-story, two bay ell built at the same time. It is one of two known dry-stone houses in Carroll County. It was deemed notable as "a good and rare example of the transitional Federal/Greek Revival period."

The Carrollton–Prestonville Bridge is a continuous truss bridge that carries U.S. Route 42 and Kentucky Route 36 across the Kentucky River between Carrollton and Prestonville, Kentucky. It carries approximately 9,640 cars a day as of 2009. The bridge is located just south of the confluence of the Ohio and Kentucky rivers. The original bridge was toll bridge that opened in 1900. In 1952, it was replaced by a new bridge just a few feet downstream. The piers and eastern approach of the original bridge remain.

Locust is an unincorporated community located in Carroll County, Kentucky, United States. Its post office is closed. Locust is located west of the Little Kentucky River and southeast of Hunter's Bottom. The Hopewell Methodist Church was built in 1842 on land donated by Henry Wise. The Locust Baptist Church was constructed in 1866 along Locust Creek. It served as the commercial, religious, and educational center of northwest Carroll County from 1880 to 1940. The Locust General Store was originally at the forks of Locust Creek and flooded regularly. By the time owner James Mosgrove died in 1882, the store was purchased by John and W. Harvey Conway and expanded its agricultural supplies. In 1902, the store was moved to higher ground and a creamery and icehouse were added. The Locust School was built in 1895; the community also supported a high school, which closed in 1938. During the Great Depression, many farmers in Locust went bankrupt due to the failure of the tobacco market. Locust has always been a small community, with a peak population of about 60.

Brooksburg is a town in Milton Township, Jefferson County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2020 census, Brooksburg had a population of 72.

Monitor is an unincorporated community located in Trimble County, Kentucky, United States. Monitor was once a vibrant community, with a school, post office, general store, and black smith in the early 1900s.

The Carrollton bus collision occurred on May 14, 1988, on Interstate 71 in unincorporated Carroll County, Kentucky. The collision involved a former school bus in use by a church youth group and a pickup truck driven by an alcohol-impaired driver. The head-on collision was the deadliest incident involving drunk driving and the third-deadliest bus crash in U.S. history. Of the 67 people on the bus (counting the driver), there were 27 fatalities in the crash, the same number as the 1958 Prestonsburg bus disaster, and behind the 1976 Yuba City bus disaster (29) and 1963 Chualar bus crash (32). In the aftermath of the disaster, several family members of victims became active leaders of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and one—Karolyn Nunnallee—became national president of the organization. The standards for both operation and equipment for school buses and similar buses were improved in Kentucky and many other states. These include an increased number of emergency exits, higher standards for structural integrity, and the use of less volatile diesel fuel. On Interstate 71, the crash site is marked with a highway sign erected by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Memorial items such as crosses and flower arrangements are regularly placed at the site by families and friends.

Hunter's Bottom Historic District is a 2,810 acres (11.4 km2) historic district in Kentucky's Carroll and Trimble counties, spanning the area known as Hunter's Bottom. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The listing included 21 contributing buildings and a contributing site. Hunter's Bottom runs seven miles along the Ohio River, with the river forming the north boundary, and with the base of hills forming the south boundary. The district stops on the east at Locust Creek in Carroll County, and on the west at Canip Creek in Trimble County.
