St Nicholas' Church, Thistleton

Thistleton is the most northerly village in the county of Rutland, and a civil parish, in the East Midlands of England. The population of the village at the 2001 census was 99. It remained less than 100 at the 2011 census and was counted together with the civil parish of Stretton. The village's name means 'farm/settlement which is thistly'.The Thistleton area has shown evidence of Romano-British occupation including a large temple precinct and a possible small market settlement. To the north of the village there has been extensive mining for ironstone, a stone that has featured very prominently in the building of many churches and other buildings in the area for centuries. It was thought that the mining had obliterated evidence of the former greater extent of the village but much archaeology has survived showing that the original Romano-British settlement extended some 100 acres (0.40 km2) at least. Extensive surveys, brought about by the planning of a haulage road to the quarry to pass through the site of the ancient township, revealed features including a well-preserved Roman road and the skeleton of a child buried well away from the cemetery. The archaeology is ongoing as the mining continues.The village contains several listed buildings including the Old Rectory and the Church of St Nicholas. Many of the village's buildings are stone-walled and thatched. Although the church is of medieval origin, only the 14th-century three-stage tower, complete with gargoyles, remains. The church was rebuilt in the late 18th century by the Brudenells, and the rector, the Rev.d Sir John Henry Fludyer, 4th Baronet to whose family the elaborate chancel is a memorial. The newer building is 14th century in style; however, the shape of the apse is half an octagon externally but semi-circular inside. Most of the internal fittings, including the font and the organ, are relatively modern.Close by, to the south of the village, lies the RAF Cottesmore airfield which opened in 1938. The airfield is now the Army's Kendrew Barracks.

South Witham railway station was a station in South Witham, Lincolnshire on the Midland Railway. It was Midland Railway property but train services were operated by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. It was closed in 1959 along with most of the M&GN.The station consisted of wooden buildings and platforms on the embankment, with a goods yard to the north, which could hold 50 wagons. It was built by a Mr. C. Barnes of Melton Mowbray, similar in style to Edmondthorpe and Wymondham. The platforms had a length of 400 ft (122 m), the passing loop was 279 ft (85 m) long.

Teigh is a village and civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. The population of the village was 48 in the 2001 census. At the 2011 census the population remained less than 100 and was included with the civil parish of Market Overton. It is notable for its Holy Trinity Church, almost unaltered since a 1782 rebuild by Robert Sherard, 4th Earl of Harborough, that features pews that face one another rather than the altar. Both the parish church and the Old Rectory of 1740 are Grade II* listed buildings. The Old Rectory was used for the filming of the 1995 BBC series of Pride and Prejudice; it served as Hunsford parsonage, Mr Collins's modest home. The village's name origin is unsure, the name probably means 'a small enclosure' or 'a meeting place'.The writer Arthur Mee proposed Teigh as one of the few Thankful Villages which lost no men in the First World War.

South Witham is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,533. It is situated 10 miles (16 km) south of Grantham, 10 miles east of Melton Mowbray and 10 miles (16 km) north of Oakham. The village is close to the Leicestershire and Rutland borders.

Cribb's Meadow is a 4.2-hectare (10-acre) nature reserve east of Wymondham in Leicestershire. It is owned and managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, and is designated a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest under the name Cribb's Lodge Meadows. It is also a National Nature Reserve and a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade 2.The embankment of a disused railway runs through this ridge and furrow neutral meadow on boulder clay. The diverse flora includes adder's tongue fern, pepper saxifrage, hayrattle and green-winged orchid.There is access from Fosse Lane, and a footpath runs through the southern end.

No. 7 Flying Training School (7 FTS) is a former Royal Air Force flying training school that operated between 1935 and 1994.From 1948 to 1954, No 7 Flying Training School was located at RAF Cottesmore, flying Tiger Moths, Harvards, Prentices and Balliols. During 1950 many improvements were made to the hangars and buildings at RAF Valley and on 1 April 1951 No. 202 Advanced Flying School was reformed at Valley, within No. 25 Group RAF, to train fighter pilots on de Havilland Vampire and Gloster Meteor jet aircraft. Vampire FB.5 and T.11 and Meteor T.7 marks were used until the unit was re-designated No. 7 Flying Training School (FTS) on 1 June 1954. On 15 August 1960 the unit was renumbered No. 4 Flying Training School RAF.The School was based at RAF Church Fenton, Yorkshire between 1962 and 1966 and again between 1979 and 1992, equipped with Hunting/BAC Jet Provost T.3A and T.5A trainers. Its final iteration came at RAF Chivenor, Devon when 2 Tactical Weapons Unit was redesignated as 7 FTS with the BAe Hawk T.1 operated by 19(R) and 92(R) Squadrons. It was disbanded for the final time on 30 September 1994 with the closure of Chivenor as an RAF station and its transfer to the Royal Marines.

Royal Air Force Cottesmore or more simply RAF Cottesmore is a former Royal Air Force station in Rutland, England, situated between Cottesmore and Market Overton. On 15 December 2009, Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth announced that the station would close in 2013 as part of defence spending cuts, along with the retirement of the Harrier GR9 and the disbandment of Joint Force Harrier. The formal closing ceremony took place on 31 March 2011, and the airfield became a satellite of RAF Wittering until March 2012.In July 2011 Defence Secretary Liam Fox announced plans for it to be the airfield for one of five of the Army's Multi-Role Brigades. In April 2012 it was renamed Kendrew Barracks after Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew.

Kendrew Barracks is a British Army barracks located 1.1 miles (1.8 km) north east of Cottesmore, Rutland, England. The barracks opened in 2012, on the site of the former RAF Cottesmore.

Withham Preceptory, one of the smallest Knights Templar preceptories in England, was founded, before 1164, at Temple Hill, near South Witham, Lincolnshire, and was abandoned in the early 14th century. Gunby is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Gunby and Stainby, in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It lies close to the borders with Leicestershire and Rutland, 9 miles (14 km) south from Grantham, and 2 miles (3 km) west from the A1 road. In 1921 the parish had a population of 119. On 1 April 1931 the parish was abolished and merged with Stainby to form "Gunby and Stainby". To the east is North Witham, to the north, Stainby, and to the west, Sewstern. The parish is administered by Colsterworth and District Parish Council, which covers a group of rural parishes. The village name derives from a "farmstead or village of a man called Gunni", from the Old Scandinavian person name, and 'by', a farmstead, village or settlement. Gunby's Grade II listed Anglican church is dedicated to St Nicholas. Of 15th-century origin, it was rebuilt by Richard Coad in 1869, although the Perpendicular tower remained. The closest amenities are in Colsterworth, South Witham and Buckminster.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is the Church of England parish church in Greetham, Rutland. It is a Grade I listed building.

Greetham is a village and civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. The village's name means 'homestead/village which is gravelly' or 'hemmed-in land which is gravelly'.The village is on the B668 road between the county town of Oakham and the A1 and on the north–south Viking Way long distance footpath linking the Humber Bridge and Oakham. The population of the civil parish at the 2001 census was 609 increasing to 638 at the 2011 census.The oldest parts of the Church of England parish church of St Mary the Virgin are Norman, but the church today is largely as it was rebuilt in the 13th–15th centuries. The west tower and spire are 13th or 14th century and the south porch was built in 1673. The church was restored in 1897 by Jethro Cossins. The church is a Grade I listed building. It is on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register, at priority category: C – "slow decay; no solution agreed".Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust owns Merry's Meadows nature reserve, a SSSI in the parish that is important for species characteristic of unimproved grassland. East of the village just before the Sewstern Lane junction, just north of the B668 is Greetham Lime Quarry owned by the Dickerson Group of Waterbeach. Greetham has two pubs: the Plough and the Wheatsheaf, both on the B668. To the east is the Greetham Valley golf course. On the A1 near Stretton is a former pub, the Olde Greetham Inn, now owned by Construction Interior Design. The village well, of mid-19th century, has an inscription; "All ye who hither come to drink/Rest not your thoughts below/Remember Jacob's well and think/Whence "living waters" flow." It is Grade II listed.
