St Botolph's Church, Knottingley

Knottingley is a town in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England on the River Aire and the old A1 road before it was bypassed as the A1(M). Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it has a population of 13,503, increasing to 13,710 for the City of Wakefield ward at the 2011 Census. It makes up the majority of the Knottingley ward represented on Wakefield Council. Until 1699, it was an important inland river port but, in that year, the Aire was made navigable as far as Leeds, which soon surpassed it. Knottingley continued as a centre for boat building into the 20th century. In the late 19th century, it started glass manufacturing. The town is served by Knottingley railway station. After 1870, the town became known for glass manufacturing. In 1887, Bagley's Glassworks purchased the rights to the first bottle-making machine, invented by a Ferrybridge postmaster. There is a Bagley's Glass gallery in Pontefract Museum. Close to Knottingley is Ferrybridge Power Station, which had the largest cooling towers of their kind in Europe. Three of these towers collapsed in high winds in 1965. The remaining towers, which could be seen for miles around, were demolished between 2019 and 2022. The town was the last in the United Kingdom to have a working deep coal mine, Kellingley Colliery, until it closed in December 2015.

Knottingley is an electoral ward of the City of Wakefield district used for elections to Wakefield Metropolitan District Council.

Knottingley TMD was a traction maintenance depot located in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, England. The depot was situated on the Pontefract Line and was near Knottingley station. It opened in 1967 to maintain the locomotives and hopper wagons for a planned 75 Merry-go-round trains a day, expected to use the Wakefield and Goole line.

Knottingley Town Hall is a municipal building in Weeland Road, Knottingley, West Yorkshire, England. The structure, which served as the headquarters of Knottingley Urban District Council, now operates as a community centre.

De Lacy Academy (formerly Knottingley High School) is a mixed secondary school located in Knottingley in the City of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England.Previously a community school administered by Wakefield Council, Knottingley High School converted to academy status in April 2012 and was renamed De Lacy Academy. The school is part of Delta Academies Trust, but continues to coordinate with Wakefield Council for admissions. De Lacy Academy offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils.

Knottingley railway station serves the town of Knottingley in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Pontefract Line, operated by Northern, and is 16 miles (26 km) south east of Leeds railway station. The station is the final one in West Yorkshire before the North Yorkshire border and most services terminate (or start) there.

The Mary Towneley Loop is a 47-mile (76 km) circular route that forms part of the Pennine Bridleway National Trail, along the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire. The loop was opened in 2002, the first section of the Pennine Bridleway.It is named in memory of Mary, Lady Towneley, who drew attention to the poor state of England's bridleways and the need for a long-distance route for horse-riders by riding with two friends in September 1986 from Hexham in Northumberland to Ashbourne in Derbyshire. She died in 2001. The route joins the main Pennine Bridleway at two points, one near the village of Summit between Littleborough and Todmorden, and one just east of Worsthorne. Heading west from Summit the Loop climbs to Top of Leach at 474 metres (1,555 ft). The trail then passes through the town of Waterfoot in the Rossendale Valley and follows new tracks via Lumb before entering the Cliviger Gorge and then climbing up to the Long Causeway. It then heads north to rejoin the main Pennine Bridleway just east of Worsthorne. The Loop then follows the main route to enter West Yorkshire at Widdop, crosses Heptonstall Moor and drops down to cross the Calder Valley just west of the town of Hebden Bridge. The trail passes the villages of Mankinholes and Bottomley to return to Summit. An annual relay race, organized by Rossendale Harriers, took place in late January or early February until 2011. Teams consisting of five pairs of runners race over five relay legs completed the entire 47 miles and 6,400 feet of ascent of the loop, clockwise from Fearns Sports College in Stacksteads. The last race in 2011 took place on 30 January and hosted 109 teams, 1,090 individual runners from clubs across the north of England, and was won by Salford Harriers.

Sutton is a small village in the civil parish of Byram cum Sutton, in North Yorkshire, England. It lies 1 mile north of Knottingley, across the River Aire in West Yorkshire. The toponym is from the Old English sūð tūn, meaning "south farmstead". The place was once known as Sutton in Elmet, from its location in the district of Elmet. Sutton was historically a township in the ancient parish of Brotherton in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It became a separate civil parish in 1866, but on 26 March 1891 the civil parish was abolished and merged with the civil parish of Byram cum Poole to form the civil parish of Byram cum Sutton. In 1881 the parish had a population of 39. In 1974 it was transferred to the new county of North Yorkshire. From 1974 to 2023 it was in the Selby District.

Ferrybridge services is a motorway services area (MSA) operated by Moto named after Ferrybridge in West Yorkshire, England. The site has easy access from the M62 motorway and the A1(M) motorway. Originally opened in 1985 under the Granada brand, the MSA at Ferrybridge has been under the Moto brand since 2001.

Byram cum Sutton is a civil parish in the Selby District of North Yorkshire, England, containing the village of Byram and the hamlet of Sutton. The River Aire runs to the south of the parish, and the town of Knottingley is the other side of the river in West Yorkshire. The A1 road passes to the west of the parish. According to the 2001 census, it had a population of 1,406, increasing to 1,434 at the 2011 Census.

Ferrybridge railway station was a railway station located in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, England on the London and North Eastern Line. The station was opened in 1882 by the North Eastern Railway, three years after the completion of the Swinton & Knottingley Joint line via Moorthorpe on 1 May 1879 and closed in 1965.

Ferry Bridge is a historic bridge, connecting Ferrybridge in West Yorkshire with Brotherton in North Yorkshire, in England. There may have been a bridge over the River Aire at this location in the Anglo-Saxon period, which has been supposed to have been destroyed in 1070. The first bridge known definitely to have existed was built in the late 12th century, but it collapsed in 1228, killing a group of Crusaders who were crossing. That year, pontage was granted, a toll for crossing the bridge, to fund repairs.A replacement bridge was built in about 1290, with a bridge chapel completed by 1306. In 1461, during the War of the Roses, the Lancastrian Army partly destroyed the bridge, but the Yorkist Army was still able to cross, on its way to the Battle of Towton. The bridge was restored, and it was described by John Leland in 1538 as being built of stone and having seven or eight arches. Four small arches at its north end took the road across swampy ground. This route became part of the Great North Road in the early Georgian period, with coaching inns established on each riverbank. The bridge was Grade I listed in 1967. The bridge was damaged by storms in 1795, and in 1797 John Carr of York designed a replacement, on a new alignment. Bernard Hartley constructed the bridge, which was completed in 1804. It is carried by eight round-headed arches: three to cross the river, four over land on the Ferrybridge side, and one over land on the Brotherton side. The piers have cutwaters and the bridge has a parapet, with refuges over each pier, and a vase balustrade in the central section.
