Dans Run

Dans Run is an unincorporated community in Mineral County, West Virginia, United States. It is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dans Run is located along the former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (now CSX) at the confluence of Dans Run and the North Branch Potomac River.

Spring Gap is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 55. Spring Gap is located in the valley of the North Branch Potomac River along the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal at mile marker 173. Just west of the community is the National Park Service Spring Gap Recreation Area, which offers camping sites and a place to relax for hikers and bikers of the C&O towpath. The park is easy to access by car and provides canoe access to the river. The Spring Gap Recreation Area is a popular location to pick up, drop off, or park when hiking or biking the C&O canal towpath to or from Cumberland, 11 miles (18 km) upriver.Some of the best fishing in the Potomac River is in the section from Spring Gap to Hancock.Maryland Route 51 runs through Spring Gap, leading northwest to Cumberland and east to Oldtown, and Paw Paw, West Virginia. The mainline CSX railroad runs up the Potomac valley across the river from Spring Gap in West Virginia.

Fort Sellers was a small stockade on the east side of Pattersons Creek at the confluence with the Potomac River, in Franklin District, in present-day Mineral County, West Virginia. The fort was erected by Colonel Washington. Fort Sellers was one of a chain of four forts protecting the frontier. Fort Ohio was the first in the chain with Fort Sellers being the second and Fort Ashby and Fort Cocke being the outermost forts. The dimensions of this fort are not known, but it was most likely similar in size to Fort Ashby, the stockade being 90 square feet (8.4 m2). The fort did not figure into Washington's plans for the defense of the frontier for on May 18, 1756, he wrote Col. Stephen stating he wished it were possible to remove the stores at the mouth of Pattersons Creek to Ashby's fort. Stephen was further told that if he found it impractical to move the supplies stored there from the fort, then he was to make the fort as strong as possible and to strengthen the garrison. He was also instructed to "put a more experienced officer than Mr. Brockenbrough (Lieut. Austin Brockenbrough, 10th Company, Virginia Regiment) at it, whose youth perhaps may be a means of his doing something inconsistent."

Patterson Creek is a 51.2-mile-long (82.4 km) tributary of the North Branch Potomac River in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, in the United States. It enters the North Branch east of Cumberland, Maryland, with its headwaters located in Grant County, West Virginia. Patterson Creek is the watershed for two-thirds of Mineral County, West Virginia. The creek passes through Lahmansville, Forman, Medley, Williamsport, Burlington, Headsville, Reeses Mill, Champwood, and Fort Ashby.

Patterson Creek is an unincorporated community in Mineral County, West Virginia, United States. It lies at the northeastern end of the county, and is named for Patterson Creek, which empties into the North Branch Potomac River here.

North Branch is an unincorporated community in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. The Western Maryland Railroad Right-of-Way, Milepost 126 to Milepost 160 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

Warrior Mountain Wildlife Management Area is a Wildlife Management Area in Oldtown, Allegany County, Maryland.

Collier Mountain is a mountain in the Ridge and Valley region of the Appalachian Mountains, located in Allegany County, Maryland. The 1,457 feet (444 m) ridge is approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Cumberland. It runs 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast from the North Branch Potomac River near its confluence with Patterson Creek to Murley Branch south of Breakneck Hill.

Warrior Run Generating Station, owned by the AES Corporation, is a 205 megawatt cogeneration plant located south of Cumberland, Maryland, at 11600 Mexico Farms Road. In addition to electric power, the plant also produces food-grade carbon dioxide.

Mexico is an unincorporated community, in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It lies at an elevation of 604 feet (184 m).

Nicholas Mountain, or Irons Mountain, is located in Allegany County, Maryland, United States and extends northeasterly from the North Branch Potomac River for 6 miles (9.7 km) until 3.5 miles (5.6 km) southeast of Cumberland, Maryland. It reaches an elevation of 1,760 feet (540 m).

The former Springfield Wildlife Management Area was located on approximately 1,700 acres (690 ha) in Hampshire County near Springfield, West Virginia. Created during the 1970s, the land was owned by MeadWestvaco.Springfield WMA was abolished on April 1, 2004, when the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources' lease for the site expired after MeadWestvaco refused to renew it. The site was subsequently purchased by a developer who intended to during it into housing lots. In May 2015, Potomac Conservancy purchased the land. They plan to place a conservation easement on the property and donate the land to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. At that time, the land will open as a public recreation area for camping, hiking, and hunting.
