Allegany County is located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Maryland. As of the 2020 census, the population was 68,106. Its county seat is Cumberland. The name Allegany may come from a local Lenape word, welhik hane or oolikhanna, which means 'best flowing river of the hills' or 'beautiful stream'. A number of counties and a river in the Appalachian region of the U.S. are named Allegany, Allegheny, or Alleghany. Allegany County is part of the Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a part of the Western Maryland "panhandle".

The Limestone Road Superfund Site is a Superfund site located in Cumberland, Maryland on land on both sides of Limestone Road. "The Site is located in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province of the Appalachian Highlands. The area is dominated by steeply dipping slopes and ravines and northeast/southwest trending ridges. Relief in the vicinity of the Site is approximately 1,100 feet, ranging in elevation from 590 feet above sea level at the North Branch of the Potomac River to 1,700 feet above sea level at the crest of Irons Mountain. The Site itself is located on the western slope of Irons Mountain. The elevations across the Site range from 660 feet above sea level to approximately 900 feet above sea level.".

Evitts Creek is an unincorporated community located on the eastern outskirts of Cumberland, Maryland, United States along Maryland Route 51 (West Industrial Boulevard) and immediately east of the confluence of Evitts Creek and the North Branch Potomac River.

Collier Mountain is a mountain in the Ridge and Valley region of the Appalachian Mountains, located in Allegany County, Maryland. The 1,457 feet (444 m) ridge is approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Cumberland. It runs 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast from the North Branch Potomac River near its confluence with Patterson Creek to Murley Branch south of Breakneck Hill.

UPMC Western Maryland is a hospital and health system located in Cumberland, Maryland, in Allegany County. The facility, which opened on November 21, 2009, is part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) system as of February 3, 2020. UPMC Western Maryland was originally established as a combination of Memorial Hospital (Cumberland) and Sacred Heart Hospital (Cumberland), both of which are now closed. It is sometimes confused with Western Maryland Hospital Center, a state-run rehabilitation hospital located in Hagerstown, Maryland.

George Washington Carver High School was the high school for black children in Cumberland, Maryland prior to the integration of public schools in 1955.

Allegany College of Maryland (or ACM) is a public community college in Cumberland, Maryland. It was previously known as Allegany Community College. The college was founded in 1961 and is accredited by the Middle State Commission on Higher Education. The college offers 31 two-year degree programs, 30 certificate programs, and 10 letters of recognitions. The college also has campuses and extension sites in Cumberland, Maryland; Everett, Pennsylvania; Oakland, Maryland; Somerset, Pennsylvania; and LaVale, Maryland.

The Tri-State Zoological Park was a 16-acre (6.5 ha) zoo located in Cumberland, Maryland, United States. The nonprofit zoo opened in 2003, and contains mainly exotic animals rescued or in need of homes, including lions, tigers, primates, various exotics, birds and reptiles. The zoo was privately owned by Bob Candy of Cumberland and has no paid employees, run only by volunteers.In February, 2020, four years after beginning a legal battle, PETA forcibly removed three big cats from Tri-State Zoological Park to a facility in Colorado.The zoo was not accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.On October 2, 2022, the zoo permanently closed its doors.

WCMD is a news/talk/sports formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Cumberland, Maryland, serving the Cumberland/Frostburg area. WCMD is owned and operated by West Virginia Radio Corporation. It simulcasts on 1230 AM and 102.1 FM, a translator station, W271AT.On May 17, 2021, WCMD changed their format from ESPN sports to news/talk and sports.

The Thomas B. Finan Center is an inpatient psychiatric hospital located in Cumberland, Maryland. It is owned and managed by the state of Maryland. The CEO is Lesa Diehl.This state psychiatric facility operates 88 beds.The Finan Center provides services to persons who are 18 years of age and older. The Center includes patients with criminal histories, non-criminals who have been involuntarily civilly committed and voluntary patients. The Finan Center is accredited by The Joint Commission. It provides mental health services for adults from Washington, Allegany, Garrett and Frederick counties. It opened in 1979 and is named for Thomas B. Finan, who was an Attorney General of Maryland.

Mexico is an unincorporated community, in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. It lies at an elevation of 604 feet (184 m).

Greenway Avenue Stadium, located in Cumberland, Maryland serves as the primary athletics stadium for Allegany County, Maryland, United States. Originally named Fort Hill Stadium it was constructed in the 1930s by the Public Works Administration as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. The field first opened for play in the fall of 1937 and was called Fort Hill Stadium. The name was changed in 1987 to Greenway Avenue Stadium, named after the street where it resides. The facility is shared by both Allegany High School and Fort Hill High School. The stadium seats 6,054 with a total capacity of approximately 15,000. Prior to 1998 the field was natural grass. In 1998, the field was upgraded to an all weather prescription turf with the anticipation of hosting scrimmages by the Washington Redskins who held summer training camp at Frostburg State University. The prescription turf was again replaced for the 2008 football season and again replaced for the 2019 season. In February 2022 the Allegany County Commissioners awarded $5 million to support the renovation of Greenway Avenue Stadium. Projects included in the package are replacement of the visitor's side bleachers and adding a new running track. The money will come from the fund balance for the project, with the county adding a pledge of $1.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. Each year thousands of spectators attend the student athletic events held in the stadium. The facility is the location of some of the state's finest music and sporting events.
