Paekākāriki Hill

The Puketiro Wind Farm was a renewable energy project proposed for land owned by the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) in the Puketiro Forest near Pauatahanui, north of Wellington, New Zealand. However, the project did not subsequently proceed. The project was originally proposed by the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) in June 2005. After a tender process in 2006, RES NZ Ltd was selected to develop the project.It was planned for approximately 40 wind turbines with a capacity of up to 130 MW. Wide public consultation was undertaken during early development of the project. 1300 submissions were received, with over 90% in favour. Nonetheless, a group of residents (Pauatahanui Futures Society Inc.) sought an injunction in May 2008 to stop the wind farm from proceeding. In September 2008 the GWRC withdrew permission for the three turbines that were to be installed in Battle Hill Farm Forest Park, and subsequently banned all turbines from the park. As of June 2011 the project was not expected to proceed.The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "view from the hill" for Puketiro.

The Battle Hill engagement took place from 6 to 13 August 1846, during the New Zealand Wars and was one of the last engagements of the Hutt Valley Campaign. The engagement was between Ngāti Toa on one side and a colonial force of European troops, police, and Ngāti Awa allies on the other. The colonial force commanded by Major Last was seeking to end resistance to European settlement in the Hutt Valley region. It was pursuing over 300 Ngāti Toa, including women and children, led by Te Rangihaeata.

Transmission Gully, a chain of steep-sided, isolated valleys in the Wellington Region of New Zealand, runs approximately north–south between the Kāpiti Coast and Tawa, through hills east of Porirua. The gully's name comes from the 110,000-volt transmission line that formerly ran through it. The line, built in 1924, linked Wellington to the Mangahao hydroelectric station near Shannon, and later to the wider North Island transmission grid. Despite lying mostly within the boundaries of Porirua City, Transmission Gully is sparsely populated, and most of the land is farmland, forest, or scrub. There are some areas with lifestyle blocks, particularly near Pāuatahanui, and Transmission Gully is also home to Battle Hill Farm Forest Park. The 1879 proposal for a Haywards–Plimmerton Line railway route north from Wellington envisaged using these valleys; the line was never built. The Transmission Gully Motorway running through the gully was opened in March 2022. It is part of State Highway 1 and was constructed as part of the 2008-2017 National Government's Roads of National Significance package. It will not, however, offer any access to the gully itself, as only a single interchange providing access to Paekākāriki exists between Pāuatahanui and Mackays Crossing. Apart from the motorway, the only other road access through Transmission Gully is the narrow and winding Paekākāriki Hill Road. Beginning at Paekākāriki, it travels up and over the western ridge of Transmission Gully, and then gradually descends the western bank along most of the length of the gully to Pāuatahanui.

Pāuatahanui (; Māori: [ˈpaʉatahanʉi]) is a village in New Zealand's North Island. It is at the far eastern end of what was known as the Pāuatahanui Inlet (since renamed to Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour), an arm of the Porirua Harbour, northeast of Wellington. In local government terms, Pāuatahanui is part of the Northern Ward of Porirua City.

Pāuatahanui Wildlife Reserve is a wetland reserve at the eastern edge of the Pāuatahanui Inlet of the Porirua Harbour in Porirua, New Zealand. The reserve contains the most significant area of saltmarsh in the lower North Island of New Zealand. It also includes tidal mudflats, shrub lands and regenerating coastal forest. The reserve covers 50 hectares (120 acres), of which the Department of Conservation owns 46 hectares, and Forest & Bird owns the remaining 4 hectares under covenant to the Queen Elizabeth II Trust. The reserve is managed by a committee of Forest & Bird representatives in association with the Department of Conservation.

St Alban's Church is an heritage-listed Anglican church located in Pāuatahanui, Porirua, New Zealand.

Taylor-Stace Cottage, built in 1847, is the oldest surviving house of European origin in the Wellington region of New Zealand. The cottage is classified as a Category I historic place (a place of "special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value") by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Taylor-Stace Cottage was built by immigrants William and Anne Taylor, who had come to New Zealand in 1840. The back portion of the cottage was completed in 1847 and was sold to Alfred Stace the following year. It's debated whether the front part of the cottage was built during the 1850s or in 1906 after the Stace family moved on. During the 1970s the cottage was used as a craft gallery, and in the 2000s it was an art gallery for a couple of years.In 2010 and 2011 combined funding and effort by the new owners, Porirua City Council and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, saw the cottage restored and raised to protect it from flooding. Its current use is as a beauty salon.

Pukerua Bay railway station is located on the North Island Main Trunk Railway (NIMT) in Pukerua Bay, New Zealand and is part of the suburban rail network of Wellington. It is double tracked, has an island platform layout, and is 30.4 km from Wellington railway station, the southern terminus of the NIMT. It is one of two railway stations in Pukerua Bay, the other one at Muri being closed.

Judgeford is a suburb of Porirua, a city near Wellington, New Zealand. The main buildings are a dog boarding place called Judgeford Kennels and Cattery, Judgeford golf course, some light industrial and other businesses, and houses. The closest school is Pāuatahanui School. There is a nearby church called Saint Albans Church, but it is in Pāuatahanui not Judgeford. The headquarters of BRANZ, the Building Research Association of New Zealand, is at the beginning of Moonshine Road near Judgeford.

Pukerua Bay is a small seaside suburb at the southern end of the Kāpiti Coast, New Zealand. In local government terms it is the northernmost suburb of Porirua City, in the Wellington Region. It is 12 km north of the Porirua City Centre on State Highway 59, and 30 km north of central Wellington. In Māori, the words puke rua literally mean two hills but it is not clear to which hills the name refers.

Camborne, New Zealand is a hilltop and seaside suburb of Porirua. Camborne covers an area of 0.84 km², including a land area of 0.84 km². Most of the suburb is a short walk from Porirua Harbour, and many homes have views of the harbour, neighbouring hills, the sea and Mana Island.

Whitby, a large suburb of Porirua City, New Zealand, located along much of the southern shore of the Pauatahanui Inlet of Porirua Harbour was comprehensively planned in the 1960s (when still in Hutt County) and it has been continuously developed since, with current landscaping and expansion in the hills behind the eastern part of Whitby to facilitate the future growth of the suburb. The name of the suburb itself, as well as the nautical theme of neighbourhood and street names, are drawn from the life and career of the Pacific explorer James Cook. The bicentennial of his first (1769) visit to New Zealand occurred when the development of Whitby started. The suburb is commercially centred on the Whitby Shopping Centre, containing almost all the retail businesses in Whitby.
