Pukerua Bay railway station

Pukerua Bay is a small seaside suburb at the southern end of the Kāpiti Coast, New Zealand. In local government terms it is the northernmost suburb of Porirua City, in the Wellington Region. It is 12 km north of the Porirua City Centre on State Highway 59, and 30 km north of central Wellington. In Māori, the words puke rua literally mean two hills but it is not clear to which hills the name refers.

Transmission Gully, a chain of steep-sided, isolated valleys in the Wellington Region of New Zealand, runs approximately north–south between the Kāpiti Coast and Tawa, through hills east of Porirua. The gully's name comes from the 110,000-volt transmission line that formerly ran through it. The line, built in 1924, linked Wellington to the Mangahao hydroelectric station near Shannon, and later to the wider North Island transmission grid. Despite lying mostly within the boundaries of Porirua City, Transmission Gully is sparsely populated, and most of the land is farmland, forest, or scrub. There are some areas with lifestyle blocks, particularly near Pāuatahanui, and Transmission Gully is also home to Battle Hill Farm Forest Park. The 1879 proposal for a Haywards–Plimmerton Line railway route north from Wellington envisaged using these valleys; the line was never built. The Transmission Gully Motorway running through the gully was opened in March 2022. It is part of State Highway 1 and was constructed as part of the 2008-2017 National Government's Roads of National Significance package. It will not, however, offer any access to the gully itself, as only a single interchange providing access to Paekākāriki exists between Pāuatahanui and Mackays Crossing. Apart from the motorway, the only other road access through Transmission Gully is the narrow and winding Paekākāriki Hill Road. Beginning at Paekākāriki, it travels up and over the western ridge of Transmission Gully, and then gradually descends the western bank along most of the length of the gully to Pāuatahanui.

Hongoeka is a community in the city of Porirua in New Zealand. It is northwest of Plimmerton and adjacent to Hongoeka Bay. It extends from an urupā (cemetery) boundary at the end of Moana Road, to Haukōpua (commonly known as Big Bay). A residential area is situated in Hongoeka Bay itself and takes up flat land and lower hillsides. It is bordered by bush clad hills and farmland, and looks out over a broad sweep of rugged coastline towards Whitireia and Mana Island, and to the South Island beyond. Karehana Bay is a bay and nearby residential area at the western end of Plimmerton, a northern coastal locality of Porirua. It is located near the entrance to the Porirua Harbour, to the south-east of Hongoeka. It is about 5 minutes drive to Karehana Bay from the State Highway 59 turnoff to Plimmerton. The area looks out towards Mana Island and across Cook Strait to the South Island. Karehana Bay is the site of a fine sediment beach, the Plimmerton Boating Club (since 1925), Karehana Park and the Karehana Bay Scenic Reserve.

Plimmerton railway station is on the North Island Main Trunk Railway (NIMT) in Plimmerton, Porirua, New Zealand, and is part of Wellington's Metlink suburban rail network operated by Transdev Wellington. It is double tracked around a long island platform, with subway access from Steyne Avenue and Plimmerton Domain's Park and Ride to the north, and a controlled crossing to Steyne Avenue and Mainline Steam at the south end of the platform. Mainline Steam, a heritage steam train restorer and operator, is located in the former goods yard next to the station.

The suburb of Plimmerton lies in the northwest part of the city of Porirua in New Zealand, adjacent to some of the city's more congenial beaches. State Highway 59 and the North Island Main Trunk railway line pass just east of the main shopping and residential area. Plimmerton has its modern origins as a late 19th century seaside resort. It is named after John Plimmer, an English settler and entrepreneur who, through the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company, helped to fund and direct construction of the railway line. The estimated population is 2,180 as of June 2023.

Taupō Swamp is a lowland freshwater swamp located three kilometres (1.9 mi) north of Plimmerton and 20 kilometres (12 mi) north-northeast of Wellington. In 1986 the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust purchased Taupō Swamp with the aim of both protecting and restoring the wetland. Taupō Swamp is home to largely indigenous vegetation including sedges, flax, ferns, shrubs, herbaceous plants, and grasses. Flax leaves shelter and shade the swamp providing a habitat that is favourable for eels and native fish including galaxiid species. There are invasive plant species present that threaten the swamp including Darwin's barberry, Blackberry, Gorse, Broom, Pussy Willow and Japanese honeysuckle. Another possible threat is development of nearby land as this may cause silt to run off into the swamp as well as fire.

The Battle Hill engagement took place from 6 to 13 August 1846, during the New Zealand Wars and was one of the last engagements of the Hutt Valley Campaign. The engagement was between Ngāti Toa on one side and a colonial force of European troops, police, and Ngāti Awa allies on the other. The colonial force commanded by Major Last was seeking to end resistance to European settlement in the Hutt Valley region. It was pursuing over 300 Ngāti Toa, including women and children, led by Te Rangihaeata.

The Puketiro Wind Farm was a renewable energy project proposed for land owned by the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) in the Puketiro Forest near Pauatahanui, north of Wellington, New Zealand. However, the project did not subsequently proceed. The project was originally proposed by the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) in June 2005. After a tender process in 2006, RES NZ Ltd was selected to develop the project.It was planned for approximately 40 wind turbines with a capacity of up to 130 MW. Wide public consultation was undertaken during early development of the project. 1300 submissions were received, with over 90% in favour. Nonetheless, a group of residents (Pauatahanui Futures Society Inc.) sought an injunction in May 2008 to stop the wind farm from proceeding. In September 2008 the GWRC withdrew permission for the three turbines that were to be installed in Battle Hill Farm Forest Park, and subsequently banned all turbines from the park. As of June 2011 the project was not expected to proceed.The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "view from the hill" for Puketiro.

Camborne, New Zealand is a hilltop and seaside suburb of Porirua. Camborne covers an area of 0.84 km², including a land area of 0.84 km². Most of the suburb is a short walk from Porirua Harbour, and many homes have views of the harbour, neighbouring hills, the sea and Mana Island.

Paekākāriki Hill is a rural locality in Porirua in New Zealand's North Island. It is located inland, behind Paraparaumu and Raumati. Paekākāriki Hill Road runs approximately north to south from Paekākāriki to Pāuatahanui. Grays Road runs along the northern coast of Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour's Pauatahunui Arm, which forms the locality's southern boundary.Paekākāriki Hill Road, built in 1849, was the main highway north until 1939. The road, which is now fully sealed, is narrow and winding. It has views of the coast.The Battle of Battle Hill, part of the New Zealand Wars, was fought in the area in 1846.

Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour, commonly known as Porirua Harbour, is a natural inlet in the south-western coast of the North Island of New Zealand.The harbour is within the main urban area of the Wellington Region, and is surrounded by the city of Porirua, with the city centre to the south of the harbour. It is a regional park, administered by Wellington Regional Council.
