Dullingham

Stetchworth is a small village and civil parish in East Cambridgeshire, England, 3 miles (5 km) to the south of the horse-racing centre of Newmarket and around 12 miles (19 km) east of Cambridge.

Dullingham is a railway station that serves the village of Dullingham in Cambridgeshire, England. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west of the centre of the village. It is also the nearest railway station to the town of Haverhill in Suffolk, which is about 9 miles away. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Greater Anglia. Facilities are a ticket machine, a car park, bicycle storage and a small shelter on the platform by the signal box (on the village side). Originally opened by the Newmarket Railway in 1848 but closed in July 1850 to be reopened in September 1850 when the current route to/from Cambridge was completed the following year and the line east to Chippenham Junction (and thence to Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich) in 1854. Dullingham is a remote passing loop on the otherwise single track between Cambridge and Chippenham Junction. There is a signal box and manually operated crossing gates. Although at casual inspection the station looks like a standard double-track station the train operation is somewhat different. The main line passes the platform closer to the village (platform 2); all Westbound services use this platform, but the main-line is signalled bi-directionally and unless trains are required to cross at Dullingham Eastbound services typically use this line too. At the time of writing (December 2012) the only regular passenger service to use the distant platform (platform 1) is the train at around 0800 to Ipswich which passes a train to Cambridge at Dullingham. The remote platform (on the loop line) is only signalled to allow Eastbound services to use it. Fast passing services always use the main line if possible - there is a speed restriction on the loop. The service pattern typically alternates; trains either call at Dullingham or Kennett Monday-Friday with the exception of the 16:44 and the 17:44 services from Cambridge. Sunday services typically call at both.

Westley Waterless is a small village and civil parish in East Cambridgeshire, England, 5 miles south west of Newmarket.

Burrough Green is a village and parish in Cambridgeshire, England. The population of the village at the 2011 census was 378. The soil is various; subsoil, clay and chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area of the parish is 2,272 acres (919 ha); the population in 1921 was 334." It is described in Kelly's Directory (1929) as a "village and parish 2½ miles south-east from Dullingham station on the Cambridge and Bury branch of the London and North Eastern Railway and 6 south from Newmarket, in the hundred of Radfield, Newmarket union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Cheveley, archdeaconry and diocese of Ely."

Brinkley is a small village in Cambridgeshire, England. It is situated about 15 miles east of Cambridge and 5 miles south of Newmarket, the horse racing centre. It features a pub, The Brinkley Lion, but its post office closed down in the 1990s. Children go to school in the neighbouring village, Burrough Green. The local church is St Mary's Church. Most of it dates from around 1600 but some parts of it are older. It has a beautiful east window (the tower is at the west end) which is thought to date from around 1300 so it is likely there was probably a building here much earlier. The rectors of Brinkley are recorded all the way back to 1260. There have been around 50 since then. From time to time the residents invite everyone with the surname Brinkley to come to the village fete, which is held in July each year in the grounds of Brinkley Hall, next to the church. The last time this happened was in July 2000 when 250 Brinkleys from all over the world turned out.

Park Wood is an 8.1 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Brinkley in Cambridgeshire.This is woodland of the wet ash/maple type, a scarce and declining habitat. Ground flora include bluebell, dog’s mercury and oxlip, and there are indicators of ancient woodland such as herb-paris and butterfly-orchid.The site is private land with no public access.

Devil's Dyke or Devil's Ditch is a linear earthen barrier, thought to be of Anglo-Saxon origin, in eastern Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. It runs for 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) in an almost straight line from Reach to Woodditton, with a 10-metre-high (33 ft) ditch and bank system facing southwestwards, blocking the open chalkland between the marshy fens to the north and the formerly wooded hills to the south. It is a Scheduled Monument, a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.

Lower Wood is a 9 hectare nature reserve east of Weston Colville in Cambridgeshire. It is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.This ancient woodland has a variety of flora such as oxlips and early-purple orchids in the spring and water avens and germander speedwells in the summer. Muntjac and roe deer use the site and birds include goldcrests, great spotted woodpeckers and tawny owls.There is access from a footpath along the eastern boundary.

RAF Newmarket was a Royal Air Force station located near Newmarket, Suffolk, England, near the border with Cambridgeshire. It was opened in 1939 and closed in 1945.

Newmarket Heath is a 279.3-hectare-large (690-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Newmarket in Suffolk. It covers most of Newmarket Racecourse.Most of this site is chalk grassland, and it has areas of chalk heath, a rare habitat in Britain. There is a rich variety of flowering plants, including a nationally rare species listed in the British Red Data Book of threatened species and five nationally uncommon ones. The dominant grasses are upright brome and sheep's fescue.

Weston Colville is a village in South Cambridgeshire, 10 miles southeast of Cambridge and 6 miles south of Newmarket, close to the border with Suffolk.
