Winterscleugh

Borrowdale is a valley in the English Lake District. It is located in the historic county of Westmorland, and is sometimes referred to as Westmorland Borrowdale in order to distinguish it from another Borrowdale located in Cumberland. The valley straddles the eastern border of the Lake District National Park, and is within the unitary authority area of Westmorland and Furness. The valley carries Borrow Beck for 11 kilometres (6.8 mi), from Borrowdale Hole, through Borrowdale Moss to End of Borrowdale, crossing the A6 road at High Borrow Bridge and reaching the River Lune at Low Borrow Bridge, the site of a Roman fort. The original bridge has been supplemented by a new structure carrying the A685 road. The location also contains viaducts carrying the M6 motorway and the West Coast Main Line railway. The upper segment, above High Borrow Bridge, is very remote; the lower segment carries a bridleway along its length, and has easy parking at the eastern end just off the A685, but remains quiet even in the high season.

Whinfell Beacon is a hill of 472 metres (1,549 ft) in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England, to the east of the Lake District. It is in the far east of the Lake District National Park since the national park's expansion in 2019. It is east of the A6 road and west of the M6 motorway, south of Borrowdale, Westmorland (not the better known Borrowdale in the central lake district) and east of the upper reaches of the River Mint. There is a cairn and remains of a shelter near the summit, but the highest point is a few metres away on the north east side of the wall across the summit.Whinfell Beacon can form part of a 19 kilometres (12 mi) walk starting from the A685 road 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of Tebay, climbing Grayrigg Forest (with an optional extension to Grayrigg Pike), and following the ridge south of Borrowdale over Birk Fell, Castle Fell and Mabbin Crag, west as far as the A6 until dropping into the valley for the return.It is one of three summits, along with Grayrigg Forest and Winterscleugh, added to the list of Fellrangers in the new edition (2019-2021) of Mark Richards' eight volumes of guidebooks and bringing the total to 230. They were included after the boundary of the Lake District National Park was extended in 2019, adding them to the national park.

Whinfell is a civil parish in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England. It does not have a parish council but a parish meeting. The parish lies north east of Kendal, between the A6 and the A685. The neighbouring parishes are Grayrigg to the east, Docker to the south, Skelsmergh to the south west, Selside and Fawcett Forest to the west, and Tebay in Eden District to the north. In the 2001 census Whinfell had a population of 152, increasing at the 2011 census to 186.There are nine grade II listed buildings or structures in the parish, including bridges, barns, houses and a limekiln.

Grayrigg Forest is a hill in Cumbria, England, located on the eastern edge of what might be considered the Lake District. In August 2016 it became part of the eponymous national park. Reaching 494 metres (1,621 ft) above sea level, its summit is attainable from the less well-known Borrowdale valley. From near the summit, there are impressive views down into the gorge of the Lune valley, where road, West Coast Main Line railway, M6 motorway and the River Lune crowd between the outliers of the Lake District and the Howgill Fells. It is one of three summits, along with Winterscleugh and Whinfell Beacon, added to the list of Fellrangers in the 2019–2021 edition of Mark Richards' eight volumes of guidebooks, bringing the list to a total of 230. They were added when the Lake District National Park boundary was extended in 2019, including them for the first time.

Grayrigg is a small village and civil parish in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 223, increasing at the 2011 census to 242. It lies on undulated and partly mountainous land, 4.9 miles (8 km) north east of Kendal, on the north side of the West Coast Main Line, and west side of the M6 motorway.

Fawcett Forest is a former civil parish, now in the parish of Selside and Fawcett Forest, in the South Lakeland district of the English county of Cumbria. It included the valley of Bannisdale. The parish had a population of 23 in 2001. Owing to the minimal population from the 2011 Census details are included in the civil parish of Whitwell and Selside.

Patton Bridge is a small rural hamlet approximately 5 miles from the outskirts of Kendal, Cumbria, England. Its post code region is LA8.

The Grayrigg derailment was a fatal railway accident that occurred at approximately 20:15 GMT on 23 February 2007, just to the south of Grayrigg, Cumbria, in the North West England region of the United Kingdom. The accident investigation concluded that the derailment was caused by a faulty set of points (number 2B) on the Down Main running line, controlled from Lambrigg ground frame. The scheduled inspection on 18 February 2007 had not taken place and the faults had gone undetected.

Selside is a small village in rural Cumbria, England, about 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Kendal, close to the A6 road. It is now in the civil parish of Selside and Fawcett Forest, though it was formerly in the parish of Kendal. The population of Whitwell and Selside civil parish taken at the 2011 census was 296.St. Thomas's Church at Selside dates from 1838, with the tower added in 1894. Near to the church, Selside Hall incorporates the remains of two pele towers of the 15th and 16th centuries, with 18th-century and later alterations and additions.

The Lowbridge Estate is a country estate of approximately 2000 acres in the Lake District region of England that was in the continuous ownership of the Fothergill family from 1761. Lowbridge House, the principal house on the estate, was built in the 1830s by Richard Fothergill II (1789–1851) in the cottage orné style. The property was substantially updated and improved in 1889 and again in 2017 to 2019. The property lies between Todd Crag and Bannisdale. Other properties on the Estate include Lowbridge Cottage, Lowbridge Lodge and the Bridge House. The Estate has become a haven for red squirrels with a very active policy of conservation including the extensive planting of red squirrel friendly larch trees and the reintroduction of pine-martins.

Docker is a civil parish in the South Lakeland district of the English county of Cumbria. Docker is 4.3 miles north east of the market town of Kendal. At the 2011 census Docker was grouped with Lambrigg giving a total population of 260.In 1870–1872, John Marius Wilson from the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Docker as: "a township in Kendal parish, Westmoreland; near the river Mint and the Lancaster and Carlisle railway 3 miles ENE of Kendal"

Grayrigg railway station in Lambrigg parish, was situated on the course of the original Lancaster and Carlisle Railway (L&CR) (the West Coast Main Line) between Lancaster and Penrith. It served the village and rural district of Grayrigg, Cumbria, England. The new station opened in November 1861, and closed on 1 February 1954 replacing the L&CR station that was located two miles (3.2 km) west of the station and closed in 1861.
