Frankland railway station

HM Prison Frankland is a Category A men's prison located in the village of Brasside in County Durham, England. Frankland is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, and is located next to HM Prison Low Newton, a closed women's prison. The prison has been nicknamed "Monster Mansion" due to the many convicted murderers, rapists and terrorists imprisoned there.

Brasside is a suburban village near Durham, located in the civil parish of Framwellgate Moor in County Durham, England. It is situated to the north of Durham, and is close to the villages of Pity Me and Newton Hall. Brasside is the location of Frankland Prison (for men), and Low Newton Prison (Closed prison for female adults and young offenders). Both establishments are maximum security prisons, holding some of the most violent and dangerous inmates within HM Prison Service, the prison system of England and Wales. The theme park "Adventure Valley" is situated in Brasside.

Brasside Pond is a Site of Special Scientific Interest just north of the city of Durham, England. The site occupies an area of former clay pits sandwiched between the River Wear to the south and Frankland Prison to the north and is split into two parts by a disused railway line. North of the railway, adjacent to the prison, are two large ponds, the result of flooding of the old clay workings. These are one of the largest expanses of unpolluted open water, reservoirs excepted, in County Durham and are the most important breeding site for wildfowl in the county.The portion south of the old railway is a mix of small ponds and fen, surrounded by acid grassland.

HM Prison Low Newton is a closed prison for female adults and young offenders in Brasside, County Durham, England. The prison, which is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, is next to HMP Frankland, a Category A men's prison. Notable inmates at the prison include formerly Rosemary West, as well as spree killer Joanna Dennehy and serial killer Lucy Letby.

The A690 is a road in County Durham running from Sunderland in the east through Durham to Crook.

Kepier Haughs is a haugh located to the north of Kepier Hospital in Durham, England. It has been used as a rifle range and a sports field, as well as hosting a brick works. It was the home ground of Durham City football club between 1920 and 1923.

Kepier power station refers to a cancelled coal-fired power station on the River Wear at Kepier, 0.75 miles (1.21 km) north east of Durham, County Durham, North East England. Planned by the North Eastern Electric Supply Company (NESCo) in 1944, it was never realised as the scheme faced stiff opposition from those who claimed it would obstruct views of the historic Durham Cathedral from the East Coast Main Line. A number of people supported the scheme as it would help meet the increasing demand for electricity and provide much needed jobs in the post-depression, post-war economy of Britain. The station, which had been designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott, would have been operational by the late 1940s and would have generated 150 megawatts of electricity. However, following a public inquiry the plans were not approved and instead NESCo installed additional capacity at their existing power stations.

Gilesgate is a place in County Durham, England. It is situated east of the centre of Durham. It is also a ward of Durham with a total population taken at the 2011 census was 8,074.Gilesgate was originally the main street in a settlement associated with the Hospital of St Giles which was sited by the existing St Giles Church. The street was divided in the 1960s by the construction of the A690 and the demolition of a number of houses, pubs and shops at the foot of Gilesgate Bank to construct a roundabout. East of Gilesgate itself was Gilesgate Moor. During the 19th century, housing extended along the Sherburn and Sunderland Roads and the colliery village of New Durham was built within the parish. Additional housing was constructed along the Sherburn Road in the 1930s, including the Sherburn Road Estate, built to house residents from the slums of Framwelgate. Following the Second World War, a further council housing estate was constructed north of the Sunderland Road with the streets taking the names of war leaders and local recipients of the Victoria Cross. In modern usage Gilesgate can refer to the street, the smaller area (partly following old council boundaries) consisting of the street above the roundabout and the Sunderland Road estate, Gilesgate Moor and High Grange Estate.

Finchale Priory (pronounced finkle) sometimes referred to as Finchale Abbey was a 13th-century Benedictine priory. The remains are sited by the River Wear, four miles from Durham, England. It is a Grade I listed building.

Kepier Hospital (properly the Hospital of St Giles of Kepier) was a medieval hospital at Kepier, Durham, England.

Moor End is a place in County Durham, England. It is situated immediately to the east of Durham, close to Gilesgate Moor and Carrville. It is situated within the parish of Belmont and as Belmont and Carrville have expanded is now largely indistinct from its neighbours.

Newton Hall is a large housing estate in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north of Durham, near Framwellgate Moor, Pity Me and Brasside. The East Coast Main Line runs the length of its east boundary. It is also a ward of Durham with a population taken at the 2011 census of 7323.
