Howden-le-Wear is a village in County Durham, in England. Howden-le-Wear is approximately 1 mile south of the large market town of Crook. It has a number of shops including the village One Stop convenience store, hairdressers, butchers and the petrol station. The 2011 Census reported that Howden has a population of 1,535.

North Bitchburn is a small village in County Durham, England. It is situated 3 miles (4.8 km) north west of Bishop Auckland, near Howden-le-Wear. In the 2001 census North Bitchburn had a population of 135. The village has a row of terrace houses named Low Row consisting of 20 houses. There are also estates called Wellgarth Court, North Bitchburn Terrace and Hillside Court. There is one public house, a Methodist chapel and one shop within the village centre. The public house is named 'The Red Lion'.

Crook is a market town in the Durham County Council unitary authority and ceremonial county of County Durham, England. It is located on the edge of Weardale and sometimes referred to as the "Gateway to Weardale". Crook lies about 9 miles (14 km) south-west of the historic city of Durham, 5 miles (8.0 km) north-west of Bishop Auckland and 2 miles (3.2 km) from Willington. The A689 road from Durham leads up through Wolsingham and Stanhope into the upper reaches of Weardale. Until 1974, the town was in Crook and Willington Urban District and had a parish council.

Helmington Row is a small village in County Durham, England. It is situated between Crook and Willington, about 7 miles south-west of Durham and 3 miles north-north-west of Bishop Auckland. It has its own park known locally as the Rec, and a petrol station. The village is on the main bus route from Crook to Durham. Crook Golf Club lies to the North of the village. The village itself consists of several terraced streets with the almost totally abandoned Bowden Close within its boundaries. There are around 6 main streets in the main block of houses (3 of those are very popular, Church Street, East View and Russ Street), other streets are situated along the road (not counted). In the 2001 census Helmington Row had a population of 228. There are two sets of allotments where local people may grow their own fruit and vegetables and keep small amounts of livestock. The village once boasted several pubs, The Bowden Inn, the Shoulder of Mutton, The Helmington Inn and the Colliery Inn. The latter has recently been renamed the Copper Mine. It is also home to the 'field of dreams' which refers to a small football pitch used by locals of all ages. In the summer it is often occupied everyday and is the main attraction of the town.

It is approximately 2 mi from the small market town of Crook and 6 mi from the large market town Bishop Auckland. Approximately 1 mi northwest of the village is the World War II Harperley POW Camp 93.

Crook and Willington was an urban district in County Durham, England from 1937 to 1974. It was created by a merger of the previous Crook and Willington urban districts, along with part of the disbanded Auckland Rural District. It later formed part of the Wear Valley district. New Hunwick is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north of Bishop Auckland, joined with the older village of Hunwick. This area of Hunwick grew up around the industrialisation of County Durham.

Stanley Crook is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north of Crook and Billy Row. The area is rural, surrounded by open farm land and woodland. There are several farms and many small holdings. It is a small former mining village which used to have two collieries. During the 1970s, the village was classified as category D, which meant the council wished to demolish the whole village. However, this did not happen, only 3 streets were demolished. In the 2001 census Stanley Crook had a population of 405.The village has a BMX track and a football pitch, which until recently was home to Stanley United, one of England's oldest football clubs (who now play at Peases West). A park and a new housing estate is currently being built. The village's other facilities include primary school, a community centre, a petrol station, a small garden centre, a Church of England's Church of St Thomas. There is also a monument to World War II. It used to have a Methodist church but this has since been demolished and houses being built in its place.
