Avonmouth explosion

Chittening Platform railway station was a station on the former Great Western Railway between Filton and Avonmouth. The station was opened on 5 March 1917 to serve a large government munitions factory at Chittening. The factory project was abandoned when the United States entered the First World War, but the station remained open to serve employees at the Chittening Trading Estate until 1923. It was reopened unadvertised for workers on 27 October 1941, and opened to the public fully on 31 May 1948. The station never served goods trains. It was closed on 23 November 1964, when passenger traffic ceased on the Avonmouth and Filton line. The station was immortalised in 1964 in the song "Slow Train" by Flanders and Swann. The line past the site remains open for goods traffic, and is now known as the Henbury Loop.

Chittening is an industrial estate in Avonmouth, Bristol, England, bypassed by the A403 road, near the River Severn. It lies within the city boundary of Bristol, in Avonmouth ward, but used to be beyond it, in historic Gloucestershire, on former marshland at the southern end of the Vale of Berkeley.

Kings Weston Roman Villa is a Roman villa in Lawrence Weston in the north-west of Bristol (grid reference ST533775). The villa was discovered during the construction of the Lawrence Weston housing estate in 1947. Two distinct buildings (Eastern and Western) were discovered. The Eastern building was fully excavated (in 1948–50), the other lies mostly below Long Cross road. Finds from the site are now held in the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery. At Kings Weston Roman Villa visitors can see the only Roman bath suite in Bristol and two original 3rd-century mosaic floors as well as discover Roman central heating. The villa is open for public for special events and on open days. At other times visitors can collect a key from Blaise Castle or Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery.

Shirehampton is a district of Bristol in England, near Avonmouth, at the northwestern edge of the city. It originated as a separate village, retains a High Street with a parish church and shops, and is still thought of as a village by many of its 6,867 inhabitants. Although on the far northwest corner, and largely separated from the rest of Bristol by a broad swathe of parkland extending from the Blaise Castle estate, with the River Avon forming a barrier for access to Somerset, the community is still a convenient location from which to reach all parts of the city. Travel is also easy from Shirehampton into Gloucestershire, South Wales and Somerset since it lies within reach of the main motorways in the area, including the M5, the M4 Second Severn Crossing, and the M49, and it is served by the A4 Portway and by Shirehampton railway station, which allow access to near the city centre. It is informally known to local people as "Shire".

St Andrews Road railway station is located near to St Andrew's Road and serves a large industrial area near to Avonmouth, Bristol, England. The station and all trains serving it are operated by Great Western Railway. This station is 10 miles (16 km) north-west from Bristol Temple Meads on the Severn Beach Line. All trains serving it are operated by and the station is managed by Great Western Railway. DB Cargo UK also operate coal trains to the Aberthaw power stations in Wales on an 'as required' basis and formerly to the now closed Didcot A Power Station from the adjacent bulk freight terminal. For many years, it has been the least used railway station in Bristol.

Lawrence Weston is a post-war housing estate in northwest Bristol, England, between Henbury and Shirehampton. The estate is bounded in the east by the Blaise Castle estate and woods. It is at the edge of the Severn flood plain, directly beneath the wooded Kingsweston Hill. The industrial complex and port of Avonmouth is a mile or so west, across the flood plain. Lawrence Weston forms part of the city ward of Kingsweston. Lawrence Weston was originally a hamlet, a tything of the parish of Henbury. It was transformed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when the estate was built, absorbing both the original hamlet and the neighbouring hamlet of Kings Weston. Originally council owned, much of the housing stock is now in private hands. There are two youth centres, a BMX track, a young people's shop called Juicy Blitz and a Youth Inclusion project. It has a community farm and a range of clubs and groups for young people. Kings Weston House and Kings Weston Roman Villa both lie near the western end of the estate.

St Bede's Catholic College is a secondary school located in Lawrence Weston, Bristol, England. Since November 2011 it has been an Academy. The school also received a rating of Good during an Ofsted inspection in October 2021.St Bede's takes students from Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Nailsea, Central Bristol, Bristol's outer suburbs, and most of South Gloucestershire. It has a strong partnership with St Brendan's Sixth Form College in Brislington. The school was awarded a green flag in the Eco School Awards in July 2004.Improvements include ICT rooms built in 2004 and the lecture theatre in 2005. Also, more recently, a large block of specialist Art, Food and Design and Technology classrooms were built by Skanska in 2009. As of 4 July 2012, St. Bede's were granted planning permission to build a Sixth Form building. The project was successfully completed in 2015. In July 2017 Principal Catherine Hughes announced that she was retiring after 22 years of service to the college. The principal as of 2022 is Robert King In 2018, the Sixth Form block was expanded to build a new computer room for the Sixth Form students, alongside the new Galieo Science Block containing 2 Classrooms and 4 Science Labs.

Bristol Gateway School is a special needs school located in Lawrence Weston, Bristol, England. The head teacher is Kaye Palmer-Green. The school used to be located in St Werburghs, but moved to Lawrence Weston due to growing demand. The school offers GCSEs like mainstream schools in Bristol. The school is an EBSD/ASD school for pupils with emotional, behavioural and social difficulties. The school was assessed as needing improvement, however by 2015 it was rated as good.In 2014 the school was awarded the Youth Sports Trust Goldmark Partner Status Award.Previously a community school administered by Bristol City Council, in January 2021 Bristol Gateway School converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by the North Star Academy Trust.

Oasis Academy Brightstowe is a secondary school with academy status in Bristol, England. It opened in September 2008 in the buildings of the former Portway Community School.

Kings Weston House (grid reference ST529771) is a historic building in Kings Weston Lane, Kingsweston, Bristol, England. Built during the early 18th century, it was remodelled several times, the most recent in the mid-19th century. The building was owned by several generations of the Southwell family. By World War I, the house was used as a hospital and then later used as a school by the Bath University School of Architecture. The building is today used as a conference and wedding venue, as well as a communal residence.

Hallen Association Football Club is a non league football club based in Hallen, near Bristol, England. Affiliated to the Gloucestershire County FA, they are currently members of the Western League Division One and play at the Hallen Centre.
