Hammond Gateway station

Hammond is a South Shore Line station in Hammond, Indiana that serves trains west and north to Millennium Station and east to East Chicago, Gary, Michigan City, and South Bend, Indiana. Westbound, this is the last stop before trains cross into Illinois, and the first stop in Indiana for outbound trains.

WPWX (92.3 FM) is an Urban Contemporary radio station licensed to Hammond, Indiana and serving the Chicago metropolitan area in addition to Northwest Indiana, and is owned by Crawford Broadcasting. The station broadcasts from a transmitter a few hundred feet west of the Illinois/Indiana state line in Burnham, Illinois, with studios on Calumet Avenue in Hammond.

North Hammond is a neighborhood in western Hammond, Indiana, north of the Grand Calumet River and south of Wolf Lake. It is bounded to the south by Central Hammond, to the west by the Chicago neighborhood of Hegewisch, to the north by Robertsdale, and to the east by East Chicago. The neighborhood's boundaries correspond to Hammond's Planning District II. The neighborhood is traversed by the Indiana Toll Road, which has an exit into the neighborhood at Calumet Avenue, and by the South Shore Line railroad. Passenger trains for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District stop at Hammond Station in the neighborhood. The land area of North Hammond is dominated by industrial land uses. Residential uses are found chiefly south of the Indiana Toll Road. The greatest concentration of commercial activity is along Calumet Avenue, the neighborhood's principal north-south thoroughfare.North Hammond is sometimes considered to include Robertsdale, thus embracing all of Hammond from the Grand Calumet River to Lake Michigan.

The Lake County Superior Courthouse was the original building for the superior court of Lake County, located in northwest Indiana. It was built in 1903 in downtown Hammond, Indiana by architect Joseph Tristan Hutton. The courthouse was located on the corner of Hohman Avenue and Rimbach Street. It was demolished in 1974, to be replaced with a parking lot.

Hammond Academy of Science and Technology (HAST) is a charter school located in Hammond, Indiana. This school focuses on both science and technology with a heavy emphasis on a small teacher-to-student ratio. HAST is both a high school and middle school with grades ranging from 6-12.

State Street Commercial Historic District is a national historic district located at Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. The district encompasses 28 contributing buildings in the central business district of Hammond. It developed between about 1885 and 1946, and includes notable example of Commercial, Classical Revival, Late Gothic Revival, and Art Deco style architecture. Notable buildings include the L. Fish Building (1927), Federal Building (1939), Lincoln Hotel (1923), Seifer Building (1925), and the Henderson Building (1902).It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Hohman Avenue Commercial Historic District is a national historic district located at Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. The district encompasses 15 contributing buildings in the central business district of Hammond. It developed between about 1904 and 1956, and includes notable example of Romanesque Revival, Classical Revival, and Colonial Revival style architecture. Notable buildings include Knott's Apartments (1904), Emmerling Ambulance Garage (1918), Emmerling Building (1918), St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church Complex (Church, 1912–1914; Rectory, c. 1915; Hall, 1956), LaSalle Hotel (aka Hotel Mee, 1908), OK Building (1913), and the Hammond National Bank (aka Ruff Building, 1911).: 3 It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

Powderhorn Lake, within Illinois but close to the state line, is a 48 acres (19 ha) lake that is part of the sand wetlands of the Indiana Dunes, most of which are located in the nearby state of Indiana. It is the centerpiece of the 192 acres (78 ha) Powderhorn Lake Forest Preserve, part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County in Cook County, Illinois.Powderhorn Lake drains into the Grand Calumet River, which is historically part of the Lake Michigan watershed. Man-made engineering now moves the Grand Calumet River’s water into the Cal-Sag canal and valley system, which drains into the Des Plaines River and ultimately into the Illinois River.

Central Hammond is a neighborhood in western Hammond, Indiana, approximately between the Illinois state line and White Oak Avenue, north of 165th Street. It is bounded to the south by South Hammond and Woodmar, to the west by Calumet City, Illinois, to the north by North Hammond, and to the east by the East Chicago neighborhoods of Roxana and Southside. The sinuous Grand Calumet River marks the neighborhood's northern boundary. The neighborhood's boundaries correspond to Hammond's Planning District III. Central Hammond is made up of a patchwork of residential, commercial and institutional land uses. The neighborhood includes Hammond's historic downtown, home of the State Street Commercial Historic District and Hohman Avenue Commercial Historic District, as well as the Hammond federal courthouse for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. Beyond the downtown, the neighborhood is also contains the Forest–Moraine Residential Historic District in its southwestern corner.

State Bank of Hammond Building is a historic bank building located at 5444-5446 Calumet Avenue in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. It was built in 1927, and was designed by Chicago architects Vitzthum & Burns. It is a two-story, Classical Revival style brick, concrete, and steel building on a full basement. The front facade is faced in terra cotta and features a colossal entry portico with two engaged square columns and two fluted round columns. The Northern States Life Insurance Company ceased operation in 1931, and the building subsequently housed the Calumet State Bank from 1933 until 1935, and later a license bureau and other retail and office uses.: 2, 4 It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Hammond Civic Center is a 4,500-seat multi-purpose arena located in Hammond, Indiana. The arena opened in 1938. It is well known for hosting various local concerts, and sporting events such WWE Wrestling, Impact Wrestling, mixed martial arts fighting and roller derby, for the area. In the 1950s, it played host to a number of neutral-court National Basketball Association games. It is the home arena for the Calumet College of St. Joseph's Crimson Wave basketball and volleyball teams, which play in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Civic Center first became known to professional sports fans as the home to the Hammond Rollers of the now defunct American Basketball Association. American rock band Kiss played at the Civic Center on Easter Sunday in April 1986, causing local church groups to protest the event. During the show, Kiss blew out half of the windows on the outside west wall of the Civic Center. The sound system they used on this tour was rated at 120 decibels. Before the show, Gene Simmons and Eric Carr of the band walked around the perimeter of the building, trying to hold polite conversations with the church groups. The concert went on as scheduled. Largely due to the church protest controversy, the concert sold only 1,900 tickets. The Civic Center plays host to various well-attended professional sporting events. On September 9, 2012, K.O. Sports Promotions hosted a boxing card for a capacity crowd at the Civic Center, with the main event featuring former United States Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Carl Davis (boxer) in an eight-round heavyweight bout against former number one heavyweight contender Bert Cooper.

Northern States Life Insurance Company is a historic office building located at Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. It was built in 1926, and is a two-story, Classical Revival style limestone building on a partially exposed basement. It features an elevated terrace, engaged columns, and sculptural panels with low relief carvings. The Northern States Life Insurance Company ceased operation in 1930, and the building subsequently housed radio station WWAE (1938-1940), a branch library (1945-1965), Purdue University extension service (1943-1946), Hammond school administrative offices (1946-1984), and school.: 5–6, 16, 23 It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
