Covington, South Lanarkshire

Thankerton is a small village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. It is located between Biggar and Lanark, and situated between Quothquan Law and Tinto (two local hills). Thankerton's name derives from an early feudal lord called Thancard the Fleming, and means Thancard's enclosure. Ton is Old English for an enclosed settlement, and evolved into the modern English word town. Thancard was probably one of the Flemish knights who accompanied David I to Scotland to claim the Scottish throne and as such was rewarded with grants of land in Scotland. To the west of Thankerton is a hamlet called Eastend, on the south edge of the Carmichael Estate, whose main house, Eastend House, was used by the Polish Army between August 1940 and May 1941. A stone in the house, with the Polish eagle on it, commemorates the event.

Thankerton railway station served the village of Thankerton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, from 1848 to 1965 on the Caledonian main line.

Quothquan (also formerly spelled Couth-Boan, meaning "the beautiful hill"; Scottish Gaelic: A’ Choitcheann, pronounced [ə ˈxɔʰtʲçən̪ˠ], meaning "the common") is a village in Libberton parish, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is 3+1⁄4 miles (5.2 km) northwest of Biggar, and 7+1⁄2 miles (12.1 km) southeast of Lanark. To the southwest is the 1,098-foot (335 m) high hill Quothquan Law, topped by the remains of a hill fort. The hill comprises two elements, one is an enclosure to the southeast which is around 400 by 230 feet (120 by 70 m). The other is a lower larger annexe to the northwest, with double ramparts and a medial ditch which has mostly been filled in.

Libberton is a village and historical parish in South Lanarkshire. The village is approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Quothquan and 2.3 miles (3.68 km) south-east of Carnwath. The nearest rivers are the South Medwyn River, the North Medwyn River and the River Clyde which lies the east of the village.

Symington railway station served the village of Symington in Scotland between 1848 and 1965. It was on the main line of the Caledonian Railway and for most of its life was the junction for the branch to Peebles.

Bankhead railway station served the isolated settlement of Bankhead, east of Carstairs Junction in South Lanarkshire, Scotland from 1867 to 1945 on the Dolphinton branch.

Pettinain is a hamlet and civil parish in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, 7 miles (11 km) east of Lanark. Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Pettinain in 1887 as "par. and vil., Lanarkshire, on river Clyde - par., 3900 ac., pop. 360; vil., 3 miles S. of Carstairs Junction; P.O".

Shieldhill Castle is a category B listed building located near Biggar in South Lanarkshire. The building dates back to 1199 and is currently being run as Shieldhill Castle Hotel.

South Medwin is a river in the Lanarkshire region of Scotland. Along with the confluence of the North Medwin River it forms the Medwin water basin. The South Medwin flows westward to join the River Clyde a mile (1.5 km) south of Carnwath at a point called "The Meeting".

The A72 road is a major route in Scotland connecting Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, with Galashiels in the Scottish Borders. It travels for over 97 kilometres (60 mi) in a south-easterly direction, along the Clyde and Tweed valleys, passing the towns of Larkhall, Lanark, Biggar and Peebles.

Symington is a small village in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Biggar, 10 miles (16 km) east of Douglas and 13 miles (21 km) southeast of Carluke. Geographical features near Symington include Tinto Hill, the Coulter Hills and the River Clyde. A map by Pont in 1596 showed two St John's Kirks in a small settlement, and another map by Roy in 1754 showed a mill to the east.

Tinto is an isolated hill in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. It comprises little more than one top, which stands on the west bank of the River Clyde, some 8 kilometres (5 mi) west of Biggar. The peak is also called "Tinto Tap", with the name Tinto possibly deriving from the Scottish Gaelic word teinnteach, meaning "fiery", which may refer to its ancient past as a look out beacon. Further known as the "Hill of Fire" it is also suggested exposed red hue felsite rock visible in many places on the hill helped gave rise to this name due to the effect seen when a setting sun illuminates the hillside. At the summit sits "Tinto Cairn", and with a diameter of 45 m (148 ft) and a height of 6 m (20 ft) it is one of the largest Bronze Age round cairns in Scotland, most of which are found at lower elevations.An old Scots children's rhyme tells of the "kist in the mist" at "Tintock tap", kist being the Scots word for "chest". It is accessible for walking and is one of the premier locations for hanggliding and paragliding. Tinto is located near the small villages of Thankerton and Wiston. Tinto is also the venue for one of the most popular hill running races in Scotland which is held annually in November.
