Kober Bridge (Arabic: كوبرى كوبر, Kubri Kūbir) is a bridge for road traffic that links the neighbourhood of al-Riadh in Khartoum with Kafouri in the industrial city Khartoum North across the Blue Nile in central Sudan. Named after the adjacent neighbourhood Kober (from Cooper, the first director of Kober prison at the beginning of the 1900s) in Khartoum North, it is also called "Armed Forces Bridge" and was opened on 23 October 2014.

The National Ribat University (NRU) (Arabic: جامعة الرباط الوطني) is a university based in the city of Khartoum, Sudan.The President of the Republic is the sponsor of the university. The University Council is chaired by the Minister of Interior, and the Director General of Sudanese Police Forces is his deputy. The university is ranked 10,402 in the world, third in Sudan. In Sudan, it ranks below the University of Khartoum and the Sudan University of Science and Technology, above Karary University and the International University of Africa.The National Ribat University is one of the biggest universities in Sudan that offers a variety of programs Associate degree, Bachelor's degree and Master's degree. This university is partially affiliated with the Sudanese Police, whereas the students do not graduate with an official police ranking.

The University of Khartoum (U of K) (Arabic: جامعة الخرطوم) is a public university located in Khartoum, Sudan. It is the largest and oldest university in Sudan. UofK was founded as Gordon Memorial College in 1902 and established in 1956 when Sudan gained independence. Since that date, the University of Khartoum has been recognized as a top university and a high-ranked academic institution in Sudan and Africa.It features several institutes, academic units and research centers including Mycetoma Research Center, Soba University Hospital, Saad Abualila Hospital, Dr. Salma Dialysis centre, Institute of Endemic Diseases, Institute for Studies and Promotion of Animal Exports, Institute of African and Asian Studies, Institute of Prof. Abdalla ElTayeb for Arabic Language, Development Studies and Research Institute, The Materials and Nanotechnology Research Center and U of K publishing house. The Sudan Library, a section of the university's library, serves as the national library of Sudan. It is also characterized by freedom of expression, and a number of revolutions have ignited from it to bring down unjust governments.

Sudan Airways Flight 109 was a scheduled international Amman–Damascus–Khartoum passenger flight, operated with an Airbus A310 by the flag carrier of Sudan, Sudan Airways. On 10 June 2008, at approximately 17:26 UTC, the Airbus A310 crashed on landing at Khartoum International Airport, killing 30 of the 214 occupants on board.The investigation was conducted by Sudan's Air Accident Investigation Central Directorate with assistance from the French Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety (BEA). The investigation concluded that the accident was caused by the long flaring distance of the flight on a wet runway, aggravated with the non-deployment of the autobrake and one of the Airbus A310's two engine reversers. The inclement weather condition and the crew's lack of information on the weather were cited as contributing factors. Following the accident, Sudan's Air Accident Investigation Central Directorate issued several recommendations, mainly on better training and better infrastructure on the airport.

Burri Almahas (Arabic: بري المحس) is a neighbourhood located in the state of Khartoum within northern region of the city of Khartoum, and it is one of the old neighbourhoods of Khartoum.The name consists of two parts: Berri which is derived from "Bar Toti", while the Mahas are the ethnicity that formed the first inhabitants of Tuti Island. Some of them preferred to move from Tuti Island to the mainland of Khartoum because of their cultivation, and they established Al-Mahas land as the first inhabited settlement in Khartoum in 1575.Burri Almahas is situated nearby to the neighbourhoods of Garden City and Burri al-Drayssa, and home to the Burri Sports Club.Burri Almahas has a Köppen climate type of BWh, which indicates a hot desert climate. The area's elevation is approximately 389 metres (1,276 ft) above sea level. The district's quality of life might be impacted by factors such as air pollution, availability of parks and green spaces, and garbage disposal, among others.

Garden City (Arabic: قاردن سيتي) is a neighbourhood located in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan. It is situated near Burrī al Maḩas and is part of the Khartoum State.As a part of Khartoum, Garden City is in close proximity to several landmarks and important places. The University of Khartoum, a well-known public university, is situated about 2.5 kilometres west of Garden City. There are various streets and areas within or nearby Garden City, such as Prince Ahmed Khair Street, Gorashi Garden Roundabout, and Sahafa Street, among others.École Française Internationale de Khartoum (EFIK) is a French international school in Garden City, Khartoum, Sudan. The school was established in 1980 as the École Française de Khartoum and received its current name in 2014. Additionally, there is another institution named the University of Garden City, which is a private higher education institution located in Khartoum. It was established in 2015 and offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized bachelor's and master's degrees in several study areas.

Opened in 2007, the El Mek Nimr Bridge links the downtown area of Khartoum, Sudan with the adjacent city of Khartoum North across the Blue Nile river. It is named after Mek Nimr, a leader of the Ja'alin tribe in northern Sudan, who was famously defeated against the Egyptians.

This article covers the period of the history of Sudan between 1985 and 2019 when the Sudanese Defense Minister Abdel Rahman Swar al-Dahab seized power from Sudanese President Gaafar Nimeiry in the 1985 Sudanese coup d'état. Not long after, Lieutenant General Omar al-Bashir, backed by an Islamist political party, the National Islamic Front, overthrew the short lived government in a coup in 1989 where he ruled as President until his fall in April 2019. During Bashir's rule, also referred to as Bashirist Sudan, he was re-elected three times while overseeing the independence of South Sudan in 2011. His regime was criticized for human rights abuses, atrocities and genocide in Darfur and allegations of harboring and supporting terrorist groups (most notably during the residency of Osama bin Laden from 1992 to 1996) in the region while being subjected to United Nations sanctions beginning in 1995, resulting in Sudan's isolation as an international pariah.

The Republic of Sudan was established as an independent sovereign state on 1 January 1956 upon the termination of the condominium of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, over which sovereignty had been vested jointly in Egypt and the United Kingdom. Before 1955, however, whilst still subject to the condominium, the autonomous Sudanese government under Ismail al-Azhari had temporarily halted Sudan's progress toward self-determination, hoping to promote unity with Egypt. Despite his pro-Egyptian National Unionist Party (NUP) winning a majority in the 1953 parliamentary elections, Azhari realized that popular opinion had shifted against such a union. Azhari, who had been the major spokesman for the "unity of the Nile Valley", therefore reversed the NUP's stand and supported Sudanese independence. On December 19, 1955, the Sudanese parliament, under Azhari's leadership, unanimously adopted a declaration of independence that became effective on January 1, 1956. Azhari called for the withdrawal of foreign troops and requested the governments of Egypt and the United Kingdom to sponsor a plebiscite in advance.

On 25 May 1969, several young officers calling themselves the Free Officers Movement (after the Egyptian officers who instigated the Egyptian revolution of 1952) seized power in Sudan in a coup d'état and started the Nimeiry era, also called the May Regime, in the history of Sudan. At the conspiracy's core were nine officers led by Colonel Gaafar Nimeiry, who had been implicated in plots against the Abboud regime. Nimeiry's coup preempted plots by other groups, most of which involved army factions supported by the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP), Arab nationalists, or conservative religious groups. He justified the coup on the grounds that civilian politicians had paralyzed the decision-making process, had failed to deal with the country's economic and regional problems, and had left Sudan without a permanent constitution.
