Munttoren

The Muntplein (Mint Square) is a square in the centre of Amsterdam. The square is in fact a bridge — the widest bridge in Amsterdam — that crosses the Singel canal at the point where it flows into the Amstel river. All bridges in Amsterdam are numbered, and the Muntplein carries the number 1. Muntplein is named after the Munttoren (or simply Munt) tower that stands on this square. This tower was once part of one of the three main medieval city gates. In the 17th century, it temporarily served as a mint, hence the name. The guard house building attached to the tower is not the original medieval structure but a late 19th-century fantasy. An underpass was added to the building during a 1938–1939 renovation. The name "Muntplein" dates from 1917. The square was originally known as Schapenplein ("sheep square") and, from 1877 to 1917, as Sophiaplein (after Queen Sophia, first wife of William III). The square is a bustling intersection of six streets. It forms the southern end of the Kalverstraat shopping street and the major street Rokin. The eastern end of the floating flower market (Bloemenmarkt) along the Singel canal is directly south of the square. Six tram lines (4, 9, 14, 16, 24 and 25) stop at Muntplein, but only when travelling south. The building on Muntplein at the intersection of the Kalverstraat and Rokin is an early design by prominent Dutch architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage.

Vijzelstraat 31 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is a historical establishment, probably dating from the 17th century. It has a gable roof from the first half of the 18th century. The building is currently used as a shop, together with the adjacent buildings (numbers 27 to 35) by Aurora, a supplier of electrical and electronic products. The building has the status of "Rijksmonument" (national monument).

Excelsior is a defunct restaurant located in Hotel de l'Europe, Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin stars for the period 1957-1970 and for the period 1987–1992.Restaurant Excelsior closed in 2010 and was replaced by "Restaurant Bord'Eau" in February 2011.

Atria, institute on gender equality and women's history is a public library and research institute in Amsterdam dedicated to research and policy advice on gender equality and to the documentation and archival of women's history. Its previous names were International Information Centre and Archive for the Women's Movement (IIAV) (1988-2009) and Aletta, Institute for Women's History (2009-2013).

De L'Europe Amsterdam (formerly known as Hotel de l'Europe) is a five-star hotel located on the Amstel river in the centre of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. De L'Europe Amsterdam is situated opposite and overlooking the Munt, where the river Amstel flows into the Rokin canal. The 19th-century hotel became an official monument (rijksmonument) in 2001. Since 2012 the hotel houses the Michelin-starred restaurant Bord'Eau Restaurant Gastronomique. It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Freddy's Bar, the bar of the hotel, is named after Freddy Heineken. De L'Europe Amsterdam changed its name in 2011, after being called Hotel de L'Europe since 1896.

The Bloemenmarkt is the world's only floating flower market. Founded in 1862, it is sited in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on the Singel canal between Muntplein and Koningsplein in the city's southern canal belt. It has 15 souvenir and gift shops, with only a few still selling fresh flowers. Today, the market is one of the main suppliers of flower bulbs and tulip paraphernalia to tourists visiting Amsterdam.

Tolstraat is a street located in the De Pijp neighborhood in Amsterdam. The street runs from Henrick de Keijserplein to Amsteldijk and crosses Van Woustraat approximately halfway. Tolstraat was known as Verversstraat and Ververspad until 1896. It derives its name from a toll gate that was located at its end by the Amstel. After this part of the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel was annexed by Amsterdam in 1896, the toll gate was relocated, and the street received its current name to avoid confusion with the already existing Verversstraat in Amsterdam.

The Rokin is a canal and major street in the centre of Amsterdam. The street runs from Muntplein square to Dam square. The Rokin canal used to run from Muntplein square to Dam Square, but in 1936, the part between Spui square and Dam Square was filled in. Canal boats are now moored on the remaining part of the water, from the Amstel to Grimburgwal.

Nieuwezijds Kapel (Dutch - New Side's Chapel), or Heilige Stede (Dutch - holy site) or Chapel of the Heilige Stede refers to a site in Amsterdam that includes shops and a Dutch Reformed church built in 1908 on the site of a church once called the Heilige Stede, originally built in the 15th century to replace a chapel that burned in a city fire of 1452. That original chapel had been built in 1347 as a result of the miracle of Amsterdam (15 March 1345), located on the Kalverstraat where this miracle with the eucharistic host occurred.

The Kalvertoren, a shopping center in Amsterdam, is located on Kalverstraat, Amsterdam's busiest shopping street. The project was developed by Multi Corporation. In 1998, the shopping centre tower won the annual European Shopping Centre Award that is presented by the ICSC, the International Council of Shopping Centres. The glass and steel tower has a staircase, an escalator and a glass lift, ferrying customers to the top. From the restaurant on the top floor (named Blue°), one has a view of Amsterdam's inner city. Besides many shops, it is also home to two department stores, various cafes and a restaurant.

The Rasphuis was a "tuchthuis" or prison in Amsterdam that was established in 1596 in the former Convent of the Poor Clares on the Heiligeweg. In 1815 it was closed, and in 1892 the building was demolished to make way for a swimming pool. On the site today is the Kalvertoren shopping centre. The Rasphuis was a prison for young male criminals. Female criminals were sent to the Spinhuis. The detainees in the Rasphuis were made to shave wood from the brazilwood tree (Caesalpinia echinata or pernambuco), rasping it into powder using an eight to twelve bladed rasp, hence the name. The powder was delivered as a raw material to the paint industry where it was mixed with water, then boiled and oxidised to form a red pigment, also known as brazilwood which in turn was used as a textile dye.

The Allard Pierson Museum is the archaeological museum of the University of Amsterdam. It is situated at the Oude Turfmarkt 127 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Artifacts from the ancient civilizations of ancient Egypt, the Near East, the Greek World, Etruria, and the Roman Empire are curated and exhibited in this museum.
