The Haughton-McIver House is a historic home located at Gulf, Chatham County, North Carolina. It is part of the Chatham County Multiple Resource Area (or MRA). Built in the 1840s, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 5, 1985. The house was built as a hotel for guests of the Haughton Plantation.

Marion Jasper Jordan Farm, also known as Jordan Place, is a historic home and farm located near Gulf, Chatham County, North Carolina. The main house was built about 1893, and is a large two-story Late Victorian / Queen Anne style frame dwelling. It has a two-story rear all. It features a nearly-full-facade, full-height two-tiered entry porch. Also on the property are the contributing wellhouse (c. 1900), flower house (c. 1900), blacksmith's shop (c. 1920), and caretaker's cottage (c. 1910).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Gulf is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Chatham County, North Carolina, United States, southeast of the town of Goldston. As of the 2010 census, the Gulf CDP had a population of 144. The community is home to a general store and several historic homes. It received its name from its location at a wide bend in the Deep River. Gulf is an interconnection point between the Norfolk Southern Railway and the Aberdeen, Carolina and Western Railway.

The Deep River Camelback Truss Bridge is a steel camelback truss resting on stone and concrete piers, with a macadam road surface covering a plank deck. It spans the Deep River in North Carolina, United States between the hamlets of Gulf in Chatham County and Cumnock in Lee County in a quiet rural setting amid woods and farmlands on both sides of the river. It was originally constructed in 1901. The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge is open to pedestrian traffic only. Vehicles may use a replacement bridge located about a hundred yards east of the historic structure.

The Endor Iron Furnace was an iron furnace that operated from 1861–1864 and again from 1870–1871, near Cumnock, Lee County, North Carolina. It was constructed between 1862 and 1864 to take advantage of the iron deposits along the Deep River. The furnace is constructed of soft local reddish-gray stones and measures approximately 32 feet square at the base and rises to a height of about 35 feet. During the American Civil War, the furnace produced pig iron for the Confederate Army.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.In 2001, the property was acquired by the Triangle Land Conservancy.

Farmville is a community in southeastern Chatham County, North Carolina, United States, which was once called Coal Glen. The area was the site of coal mining activities from the 18th century up the mid-1950s, and was the site of the 1925 Coal Glen mine disaster. By the time of the 1925 disaster, the town consisted of several homes and a company store.The Deep River coal field, 12 miles (19 km) long, included the Coal Glen and Egypt (Cumnock) mines.A historical marker noting the mine disaster was dedicated June 3, 2017 at Farmville Community Church at U.S. 15-501 and Walter Bright Road north of Sanford.

The Coal Glen mine disaster was a series of explosions that occurred on May 27, 1925, at a coal mine in Coal Glen, Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. At least 53 miners died in the explosions, making it the deadliest industrial disaster in North Carolina's history. The incident also partly contributed to North Carolina's adoption of a workers' compensation law several years later. The Coal Glen mine was opened by the Carolina Coal Company in North Carolina's Deep River Coal Field in about 1921. Though equipped with a ventilation system, signs of firedamp buildup were observed the day before the disaster. On the morning of May 27, 1925, three explosions occurred in the mine. The first explosion killed all underground workers and their team of mules, while the subsequent blasts injured the mine superintendent and temporarily blocked the shaft with debris. Recovery efforts were led by State Adjutant-General John Van Bokkelen Metts and a group of engineers, with additional support offered by the United States Bureau of Mines and civic groups from the nearby city of Sanford. Local authorities confirmed at least 53 men were killed, but the actual death toll may be higher. State and federal investigators later concluded that the first explosion was caused by an improperly set blasting charge which blew out a dust cloud that subsequently ignited. The disaster left 38 women widowed and 79 children fatherless. The mine was permanently closed in 1953 and later flooded. A state historical marker commemorating the event was dedicated in 2017.
