Great Breach and Copley Woods

New Ditch is a linear earthwork of possible Iron Age or Medieval construction. It partially crosses the Polden Hills in woodlands approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) south-west from the village of Butleigh in Somerset, England. Its construction is similar to Ponter's Ball Dyke 3 miles to the northeast, with the dyke on the south east of the embankment, but of less massive construction. Both were probably part of a more extensive defence scheme. It is nearly half a mile in length and was probably of greater extent originally, but as it stands, New Ditch cannot be termed a cross-ridge dyke although it does seem to be a boundary work.It is debatable whether this site is ancient because it is located close to a medieval woodland and a deer park.

The Hood monument is a memorial column to Sir Samuel Hood on a hill near Butleigh in the parish of Compton Dundon, Somerset, England. It was completed in 1831 to a design by Henry Goodridge.

Compton Dundon is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England, lying beside King's Sedgemoor and the Polden Hills, 5 miles (8 km) south of Glastonbury and 4 miles (6 km) north of Somerton in the South Somerset district. The village has a population of 705. The parish includes the small village of Dundon and the hamlet of Littleton.

Wessex is an electoral ward of South Somerset District Council in Somerset, England. It is one of the wards that makes up the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome. Wessex covers an area of 3,800 hectares (9,400 acres) and in 2011 a population of 5,402 was recorded.The small town of Somerton is the main settlement in the ward, which also includes Compton Dundon.The ward is represented by two councillors; in the district elections of 2015 one Conservative Party candidate and one Liberal Democrat candidate were elected.

Dundon Hill Hillfort is an Iron Age hillfort in Compton Dundon, Somerset, England. It has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. South east of the site is a Bronze Age bowl barrow which, it has been suggested, was later modified as a Norman Motte, known as Dundon Beacon.The 5 hectares (12 acres) site is guarded by a single bank ranging from 0.5 metres (1.6 ft) to 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) high, however parts of the site have been damaged by quarrying. Flint flakes, Bronze Age pottery, and Iron Age pottery have also been found, which are now in the Museum of Somerset.Dundon Hill, also sometimes called Dundon Beacon, stands out prominently in the flat country of King's Sedgemoor, rising to a height of 270 feet. One writer on ancient earthworks notes that it "looks like a respectable mountain and is in fact a natural island fortress". The whole of the hilltop is enclosed by the single bank of stones and earth.

Hurcott Farm (grid reference ST511295) is a 26.3 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Somerset, notified in 1993. At this site heavily cemented Pleistocene terrace gravels of the River Cary have yielded an abundant freshwater and terrestrial molluscan fauna. The fauna has an interglacial aspect, and includes Corbicula fluminalis and Pisidium clessini. This site is of critical importance as the keystone of the Pleistocene stratigraphy of southern Somerset, and as a freshwater facies-equivalent of the Burtle Beds.

The Somerton Viaduct is a historic railway viaduct in the town of Somerton in Somerset, England. It is situated on the Langport and Castle Cary Railway, known as the Castle Cary Cut-off, on the Reading to Taunton Line. It carries the railway over the River Cary.The viaduct was opened in 1906. The construction was overseen by Great Western Railway engineer P.A. Anthony.

The Anglican Church of St Andrew Compton Dundon, Somerset, England was built in the 14th century. It is a Grade II* listed building.

The Battle of Marshall's Elm was a skirmish that took place near Street, in the county of Somerset, South West England, on 4 August 1642. The engagement occurred during the build-up to formal beginning of the First English Civil War on 22 August, while the Royalists and Parliamentarians were recruiting men in the county. The Royalists had established their regional headquarters in Wells, but were threatened by superior Parliamentarian numbers in the vicinity. The Royalist commander sent out a mounted patrol consisting of 60 to 80 cavalry and dragoons, which came across a force of between 500 and 600 Parliamentarian recruits travelling north across the Somerset Levels under the command of Sir John Pyne. The Royalists set an ambush at Marshall's Elm, where the road rose out of the Levels into the Polden Hills. After a parley between the leaders was unsuccessful, the Parliamentarians were caught in the ambush. Facing musket fire from the hidden dragoons, and being charged at by the Royalist cavalry, they were routed. The Royalists killed around 27, and took 60 prisoners, including two of the Parliamentarian officers. Despite their victory, the Royalists were forced to withdraw from Wells, and later from Somerset altogether, due to their inferior numbers.

The Church of St Michael and All Angels in Somerton, Somerset, England dates from the 13th century and has been designated as a Grade I listed building.

The Anglican Church Of St Leonard in Butleigh, within the English county of Somerset, was built in the 14th century. It is a Grade II* listed building.The earliest church on the site was from the Anglo-Saxon period and part of this may still form part of the door. At the time of the Domesday Book the church and village were property of Glastonbury Abbey.The stone church underwent Victorian restoration and was extended in the middle of the 19th century for George Neville-Grenville by John Chessell Buckler who installed a new hammerbeam roof.Inside the church is a 15th-century octagonal font and a Jacobean altar table along with several monuments and memorials. The largest, by Lucius Gahagan includes a poem by Robert Southey and is to three seafaring Hood brothers including Admiral Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport and Admiral Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood who were the sons of the Vicar of Butleigh. There is also a Hood family chest tomb in the churchyard.The parish is part of the benefice of Baltonsborough with Butleigh, West Bradley and West Pennard within the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

The Old Town Hall is a municipal building in the Market Place in Somerton, Somerset, England. The building, which is used as an arts centre, is a Grade II listed building.
