At one time its importance lay in the Wealden iron industry, and later it became commercially important in the poultry and egg industry.The village has both road (the high street is also the A272) and rail links to Uckfield and to London via Oxted.

The station and all trains that call are operated by Southern. The line used to continue to Lewes and Brighton until 1969.

Its nearest town is Uckfield, which lies approximately 1.8 miles (2.9 km) south from the village. The village lies on the A26 road between Uckfield and Crowborough. Five Ash Down is home to the Pig and Butcher public house, a village hall which has a weekly timetable of events and the village shop and Post Office. Five Ash Down Independent Chapel, an Evangelical church, was founded in 1773 and moved to its present site in 1784, although in its present form the chapel is mostly Victorian.

Uckfield Baptist Church is a Baptist congregation based in the town of Uckfield in East Sussex, England. Although services now take place in a school, the cause—founded in 1785 by seceders from the nearby Five Ash Down Independent Chapel—had its own chapel from 1789 until 2005, when the building closed and was sold for residential conversion. The "simple brick chapel" was rebuilt in 1874 and has been listed at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance. The church was formed as a result of doctrinal differences which split the congregation at Five Ash Down a year after the church there was founded. Believers in particular redemption and closed communion left that church, which in common with many Nonconformist churches in this part of Sussex had been founded along Independent Calvinist lines, and formed a separate church at a farm in Uckfield in 1785. Four years later the present chapel was built. Another split occurred in the 1920s as the church realigned itself with General Baptist theology, causing Strict Baptist members to secede once more and form a new church which still meets elsewhere in Uckfield.

Copping Hall is a Grade II* listed house in Uckfield, East Sussex, England. It is located at 1 Pudding Cake Lane, Uckfield, East Sussex TN22 1BT. Built in the eighteenth century, it is two-storey high and contains an attic, three windows and two dormers as well as grey headers with red brick dressings and quoins. It also has a dentilled cornice, a tiled roof, and casement windows with small square panes. Moreover, there is a doorway with flat hood on brackets and door of six fielded panels.It was listed as Grade II* by English Heritage on 26 November 1953.

Buxted Park is an 84.7 hectare (206.16 acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, located near the village of Buxted, East Sussex, England. The main house is just over 0.5 km northeast of the town of Uckfield. The site was notified in 1989 under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The site is an old deer park dating back to 1199, which consists of large amounts of unimproved grassland areas. The house which forms the centrepiece of the estate is now a country house hotel owned and operated by Hand Picked Hotels. The park is famous for its herd of deer and a large artificial lake which is home to several exotic birds.

Hempstead Meadow is a 1.6-hectare (4.0-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Uckfield in East Sussex. It is owned and managed by Uckfield Town Council.The site is mainly wet grassland with scattered trees and scrub. Flora include primroses, tussock sedge and various ferns. The meadow is used as a foraging area by bats.There is access from Waitrose carpark off the High Street.

Uckfield railway station is the southern terminus of a branch of the Oxted Line in England, serving the town of Uckfield, East Sussex. It is 46 miles 8 chains (74.2 km) from London Bridge. The station and all trains that call are operated by Southern. Until 1969, the line continued southwards to Lewes and Brighton.
