Sainte-Thérèse Island (Richelieu River)

The Rivière des Iroquois is a tributary of the Richelieu River. It flows in the Saint-Luc sector, of the municipality of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in the Le Haut-Richelieu Regional County Municipality, in the region administrative of Montérégie, in southern part of the province of Quebec, in Canada. The river surface is generally frozen from mid-December to the end of March. Safe traffic on the ice is generally from late December to early March. The water level of the river varies with the seasons and the precipitation.

The Chambly Canal is a National Historic Site of Canada in the Province of Quebec, running along the Richelieu River past Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Carignan, and Chambly. Building commenced in 1831 and the canal opened in 1843. It served as a major commercial route during a time of heightened trade between the United States and Canada. Trade dwindled after World War I, and as of the 1970s, traffic has been replaced by recreational vessels. It is part of a waterway that connects the Saint Lawrence River with the Hudson River in the United States. Lake Champlain and the Champlain Canal form the U.S. portion of the Lakes to Locks Passage. The Canal has 10 bridges—8 of which are hand operated—and nine hydraulic locks. L'île Sainte-Marie (English: Sainte-Marie Island) is a river island of the Richelieu River. It is located in the territory of the municipality of Carignan, in the La Vallée-du-Richelieu Regional County Municipality, in the administrative region from Montérégie, in the south of province of Quebec, to Canada. Île Sainte-Marie is located downstream from Sainte-Thérèse Island, from which it is separated by a narrow channel.

The Sainte-Thérèse Raid was a military raid on the town of Sainte-Thérèse in French Canada conducted by British elite forces known as Rogers' Rangers that took place during the French and Indian War from 3 to 18 June 1760. Led by Robert Rogers the raid was a pre-emptive strike ordered by Major General Jeffery Amherst as a prelude to his three pronged attack on Montreal the following month. Setting off from Fort Crown Point they had to fight against a superior force of French and their allied natives along the shores of Lake Champlain. The Rangers then advanced further north to strike at the Forts of Chambly, Saint-Jean and Île aux Noix. Rogers seeing them too well defended, struck at Sainte-Thérèse instead realising it was an important supply hub. Through a clever ruse he destroyed the fort, supplies and settlement capturing prisoners and gaining valuable information before arriving back at Crown Point.

Saint-Luc (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ lyk] ) was a town in southwestern Quebec, Canada on the Richelieu River. In December 1970, the final members of the Front de libération du Québec who were arrested for their roles in the October Crisis were arrested here. On January 24, 2001, the towns of Saint-Luc, Saint-Athanase, Iberville, and L'Acadie merged into the city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.Saint-Luc was located in Le Haut-Richelieu Regional County Municipality. Population: (2001) 20,573.

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ ʒɑ̃ syʁ ʁiʃ(ə)ljø]) is a city in eastern Montérégie in the Canadian province of Quebec, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) southeast of Montreal. It is situated on both the west and east banks of the Richelieu River at the northernmost navigable point of Lake Champlain. As of December 2019, the population of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu was 98,036.

Iberville was a city in the Montérégie region of the Canadian province of Quebec on the east side of the Richelieu River, across from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. It was about 30 miles (50 km) from Montreal, and about the same distance from the United States border at the head of Lake Champlain. In 2002, Iberville merged with neighbouring Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, along with several other neighbouring towns and villages. The population of Iberville in 2006 was 9,989, up 6% from the 2001 census. The last mayor of Iberville was Jean Rioux, who later became a Liberal MNA in the National Assembly of Quebec and a Liberal MP in the House of Commons of Canada.

The Cathedral of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste (St. John the Evangelist) is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint-Jean-Longueuil in Canada. It is located in the city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

Saint-Jean-d'Iberville station (French: Gare du Grand Tronc à Saint-Jean-d'Iberville) is a former railway station in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. The station was built in 1890 by the Grand Trunk Railway and is located at 31 Frontenac Street.Until September 3, 1966 the Boston & Maine's Montreal to Boston and New York Ambassador made daily stops at the station. The company's night train, Washingtonian southbound to Washington and Montrealer northbound to Montreal made nightly stops at the station until September 6, 1966. The station was omitted from stops when Amtrak reinstated the Montrealer in 1972. It was recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada on June 15, 1976. Today it operates as a town tourism office.

Saint-Jean is a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of the province of Quebec. It comprises most of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and all of Saint-Blaise-sur-Richelieu. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada). It disappeared in the 1939 election and its successor electoral district was Saint-Jean–Napierville; however, it was re-created for the 1944 election. In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, its territory was unchanged. In the 1994 election (on September 12) there was a tie between incumbent Liberal candidate Michel Charbonneau and PQ candidate Roger Paquin. A new election was held on October 24 and was won by Paquin by a margin of 532 votes.

The siege of Fort St. Jean (September 17 – November 3, 1775 French: Siège du Fort Saint-Jean) was conducted by American Brigadier General Richard Montgomery on the town and fort of Saint-Jean, also called St. John, St. Johns, or St. John's, in the British province of Quebec during the American Revolutionary War. The siege lasted from September 17 to November 3, 1775. After several false starts in early September, the Continental Army established a siege around Fort St. Jean. Beset by illness, bad weather, and logistical problems, they established mortar batteries that were able to penetrate into the interior of the fort, but the defenders, who were well-supplied with munitions, but not food and other supplies, persisted in their defence, believing the siege would be broken by forces from Montreal under General Guy Carleton. On October 18, the nearby Fort Chambly fell, and on October 30, an attempt at relief by Carleton was thwarted. When word of this made its way to St. Jean's defenders, combined with a new battery opening fire on the fort, the fort's defenders capitulated, surrendering on November 3. The fall of Fort St. Jean opened the way for the American army to march on Montreal, which fell without battle on November 13. General Carleton escaped from Montreal, and made his way to Quebec City to prepare its defences against an anticipated attack.
