Maher, who replaced Mr Dick Vasey in 2017, after the latter became CEO of the Two Counties Trust, of which Ashfield School is a part.Ashfield School was chosen as a training ground for the London 2012 Olympics.

It was opened in 1848, and was located on the Midland Railway's Mansfield Branch Line (Now the Robin Hood Line). It was one of three stations that served the town. The others were both Kirkby-in-Ashfield Central and Kirkby Bentinck. The station was replaced by the modern-day station of the same name (minus the East name).

The school continues to coordinate with Nottinghamshire County Council for admissions. In September 2022 Kirby College joined the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, and was renamed Outwood Academy Kirkby.
