Carlton in Cleveland is a village in the district of North Yorkshire, England, and on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It is situated approximately 9 miles (14 km) south of Middlesbrough. The village is commonly known as Carlton, and is the only village in the civil parish of Carlton. The population of the parish at the 2011 Census was recorded at 399 and was estimated at 300 in 2013.The village has a school, Carlton and Faceby Primary School, and a public house, the Blackwell Ox, but no longer has a post office or shop. Carlton Outdoor Education Centre within the village provides activities for children. Successful National Hunt jockey Brian Hughes lives in the village

St Botolph's Church is the parish church of Carlton in Cleveland, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. There was a chapel in Carlton in the Mediaeval period, and the village was given its own parish by 1611. In 1808, its church was described as "a small modern-built structure", a simple rectangular building with a south porch and west bell gable. It was renovated from 1878 to 1879, with north and south transepts being added, but it burned down in 1881. George Sanger, the local vicar, was charged with arson, but was acquitted as there was no firm evidence against him. Occasional services were held within the walls of the ruined church, which was not rebuilt until 1896. The new building was designed by Temple Moore, and was in the Arts and Crafts style. It was Grade II listed in 1966. The church is built of sandstone, the main roof is tiled, and on the aisles and porch are stone flags. It consists of a nave with a clerestory, north and south aisles, a south porch, a chancel, and a west tower embraced by the aisles. The tower has two stages, the lower stage tall, with a staircase on the northeast in a buttress-like projection, square-headed windows, a clock face, paired bell openings with cusped ogee heads, a cornice and an embattled parapet. The windows on the north and south sides are very small, but the east window is large.

The population of the parish was estimated at 20 in 2013. Busby Hall is a country house, possibly built after a fire of 1764. It is constructed from finely-coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone with a Lakeland slate roof in 2 storeys to an L-shaped floorplan and has a 5 bay frontage. The building is grade II* listed.

The Cleveland Hills are a range of hills on the north-west edge of the North York Moors in North Yorkshire, England, overlooking Cleveland and Teesside. They lie entirely within the boundaries of the North York Moors National Park. Part of the 110-mile (177 km) long Cleveland Way National Trail runs along the hills, and they are also crossed by a section of Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk. The hills, which rise abruptly from the flat Tees Valley to the north, include distinctive landmarks such as the cone-shaped peak of Roseberry Topping, near the village of Great Ayton – childhood home of Captain James Cook.

Kirkby (historically known as Kirkby-in-Cleveland) is a village and civil parish in Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England, near Great Busby and 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Stokesley. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to Uhtred. The name of the village derives from the Old Norse kirkju-býr, which means church with a village. At the 2001 Census, the population of the village was recorded at 313, dropping slightly to 309 at the 2011 Census. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population to be 310.The village used to be served by Stokesley railway station on the Picton to Battersby railway line, which was 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the village. The A172 road is to the north and the B1257 Stokesley to Helmsley road is in the village of Great Broughton, 0.62 miles (1 km) to the east.The parish church of St Augustine was built in 1815 to replace a medieval building. The chancel was rebuilt in the early 1900s by London architect Temple Moore. It is a grade II* listed building. Besides the church, Kirkby also has a village hall and a public house, the Black Swan.To the south of the village is Kirby Bank (without a second 'K'). Part of the pathway there is a Medieval greenway known as the Kirby Bank Trod, which is believed to have been laid in the 12th century as part of the route to Rievaulx Abbey. The track is a scheduled ancient monument.

Stokesley railway station was a railway station built to serve the town of Stokesley in North Yorkshire, England. The station was on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland line between Sexhow and Ingleby, which opened in 1857. The line was extended progressively until it met the Whitby & Pickering Railway at Grosmont. It was closed in 1954 to passengers and eleven years later to goods. The station was located 16 miles (26 km) south of Stockton and 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Battersby station.

The station was on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland's railway line between Picton and Stokesley, which opened in 1857. The station was located 13 miles (21 km) south of Stockton, and 3.75 miles (6.04 km) west of Battersby railway station.

Stokesley Town Hall is a municipal building in the Market Place in Stokesley, North Yorkshire, England. The structure, which accommodates the offices and meeting place of Stokesley Town Council, is a grade II listed building.

Stokesley was a rural district in the North Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974. It was named after the town of Stokesley, which it contained.The district was enlarged in 1932 when it took in part of the Middlesbrough Rural District. It lost parts in 1968 with the creation of the Teesside county borough.In 1974 the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972. It was split three ways, with the northern parts going to the boroughs of Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough in the new county of Cleveland, and the rest becoming part of the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire. The parishes that went to Stockton were: Castlelevington, Hilton, Ingleby Barwick, Kirklevington, Maltby and Yarm, whilst Nunthorpe went to Middlesbrough.

Stokesley is a market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It lies within the historic county boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire, on the River Leven. An electoral ward of the same name stretches north to Newby and had a population at the 2011 Census of 5,537.Stokesley is about two miles south of the Middlesbrough borough boundary and eight miles south of Middlesbrough town centre. Stokesley is between Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Northallerton in a farming area. Local attractions nearby include Great Ayton, Captain Cook's monument and Roseberry Topping in the North York Moors National Park. From 1894 to 1974 the town was one of the North Riding of Yorkshire's rural district head towns.
