Charleston Orphan House

The College of Charleston (CofC or Charleston) is a public university in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 1770 and chartered in 1785, it is the oldest university in South Carolina, the 13th oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, and the oldest municipal college in the country. The founders of the institution include three future signers of the Declaration of Independence (Thomas Heyward Jr., Arthur Middleton, and Edward Rutledge), and three future signers of the United States Constitution (Charles Pinckney, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and John Rutledge).

The Albert Sottile House is a Victorian house at 11 College St., Charleston, South Carolina. The house was built by Samuel Wilson in 1890, a prominent merchant and banker. The architect of the house was S.W. Foulk of Richmond, Virginia.After his death, the house was sold to the Sottile family in 1912. The house has been part of the College of Charleston since 1964.

The Sottile Theatre is a theater in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. It is owned by the College of Charleston and is a rental venue used by many local, regional and national performing arts groups including Spoleto Festival USA. It has 785 seats and was built in the 1920s by Albert Sottile.

The Charleston Historic District, alternatively known as Charleston Old and Historic District, is a National Historic Landmark District in Charleston, South Carolina. The district, which covers most of the historic peninsular heart of the city, contains an unparalleled collection of 18th and 19th-century architecture, including many distinctive Charleston "single houses". It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.As noted by the New York Preservation Archive Project, the Charleston Old and Historic District's creation in 1931 established "the first historic district protected by local legislation in the United States and inspired legal protection of historic sites in New York City." It is legally set up in the city's regulations. According to Charleston's interactive zoning map, the "Old District" runs south from east-west Fishburne and Line streets. The National Historic Landmark-designated district is smaller, running south from Bee Street.

The John Scott House at 38 Coming Street is one of the two oldest buildings on the Charleston, South Carolina campus of the College of Charleston.In 1770, wealthy Charlestonian John Scott executed a 31-year lease for the property from St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Several lots along Coming Street were conveyed at the same time, and the papers for the nearby house at 34 Coming Street was one. The documents for that conveyance included a requirement that a two-story house be built within seven years. That term was common for properties acquired from the church, and the same term was presumably part of the transfer to John Scott.The main floor of the house was remodeled in the Greek Revival style before the Civil War. The College of Charleston bought the house in 1972 from Mrs. Helen McGill for $37,000. When the College of Charleston acquired the house, it was being used as a rental property, and college officials could not have access to all of the units. After purchasing the house, however, a room with Georgian paneling and doors was located on the second floor, confirming an early construction date.

The Rev. Robert Smith House is a pre-Revolutionary house at 6 Glebe St., Charleston, South Carolina which is used as the official residence for the president of the College of Charleston. The present use is an odd twist of history; Rev. Robert Smith, whose name has been given to the house, was the first Episcopal bishop of South Carolina and was also himself the first president of the College of Charleston.In 1698, Affra Coming donated 17 acres to the Anglican Church for use as glebe lands (i.e., lands used for rental income for a church). In 1770, streets were laid out through the lands, and a parsonage for St. Philip's Episcopal Church was planned for four acres. The house's property included the land all the way to Wentworth St. The house was built in about 1770. It is a large, two-story, double house of Carolina brick on a high foundation.The house was restored by the College of Charleston in 1965 by Herbert DeCosta. The president of the college moved into the house in 1966. When College of Charleston president George Benson moved out of the house in August 2014, maintenance workers discovered water infiltration problems which would require approximately $100,000 in repairs; although Glenn McConnell was sworn in as the new president of the college, he has not begun occupying the house while awaiting the repairs.

The Francis Marion Hotel is a historic hotel oened in 1924 and located at 387 King St., Charleston, South Carolina. It is one of the tallest buildings in Charleston. The hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America.

Grace Church Cathedral, located in Charleston, South Carolina, is the diocesan cathedral of the Episcopal Church in South Carolina. It is also a contributing property in the Charleston Historic District. The parish was founded as the city's fifth Episcopal Church congregation in 1846. The Gothic Revival church was designed by E.B. White and completed in 1848. The church remained open during the American Civil War until it was hit by a shell in January 1864. It reopened the following year. The church was also severely damaged in an earthquake in August 1886, in a hurricane in 1911, and in Hurricane Hugo in 1989. It was selected to be the cathedral at the annual diocesan convention in November 2015; the previous diocesan cathedral, the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, became affiliated with the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina in 2012. Robert Willis, Dean of Canterbury, presented the newly designated cathedral with a Canterbury Cross at a special service in April 2016. Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry was also present.

The William Blacklock House is a historic house at 18 Bull Street in Charleston, South Carolina. A National Historic Landmark, this brick house, built in 1800 for a wealthy merchant, is one of the nation's finest examples of Adamesque architecture. It is now owned by the College of Charleston, housing its Office of Alumni Relations.

The Mace Brown Museum of Natural History is a public natural history museum located on the campus of The College of Charleston, a public liberal arts college in Charleston, South Carolina. The museum has more than 30,000 vertebrate and invertebrate fossils. The collection's focus is on the paleontology of the South Carolina Lowcountry.The collection and exhibits showcase extensive fossils of late Cretaceous through Pliocene and Pleistocene marine vertebrates (sharks, rays, chimaeras, fish, marine reptiles, marine mammals) from the southeastern USA, Paleozoic and Mesozoic invertebrates and vertebrates, Mesozoic and Cenozoic fossil plants, Eocene and Oligocene land mammals from the great plains, ice age mammals, and dinosaurs. It is also a world-class collection of Oligocene cetacean fossils. The museum provides insight into the early evolution of whales and dolphins, right at the time that mysticete and odontocete whales split and echolocation evolved. The museum has the holotype specimens of Coronodon, Cotylocara, and Inermorostrum, as well as the reference specimen of Ankylorhiza tiedemani

The German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Charleston, South Carolina, was incorporated on December 3, 1840. Through usage and custom the Church is now known as St. Matthew's German Evangelical Lutheran Church or St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and is a member of the South Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
