Motherwell Civic Centre

Motherwell (Scots: Mitherwall, Scottish Gaelic: Tobar na Màthar) is a large town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. It has a population of around 32,120. Historically in the parish of Dalziel and part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is the headquarters for North Lanarkshire Council. Geographically the River Clyde separates Motherwell from Hamilton to the west whereas the South Calder Water separates Motherwell from Carfin to the north-east and New Stevenston and Bellshill towards the north. Motherwell is also geographically attached to Wishaw and the two towns form a large urban area in North Lanarkshire, with both towns having similar populations and strong community ties.

David Colville & Sons, a Scottish iron and steel company, was founded in 1871 and it opened its Dalzell Steel and Iron Works at Motherwell in 1872. By the first World War, it was the largest steel works in Scotland and it continued to expanded afterwards taking over a number of other steel works in Cambuslang and Glengarnock. Nationalised in 1951, it became part of the Iron and Steel Corporation of Great Britain. It was privatised in 1955 and the construction of Ravenscraig steelworks resulted in the closure of a number of its other works. It was renationalised in 1967, becoming part of British Steel Corporation. The company provided steel to famous liners like the Titanic and the Queen Mary

Dalziel Park Stadium was a football stadium located at Airbles Street and Glencairn Street in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, that hosted the home matches of Motherwell, formed after a merger between Alpha and Glencairn. The first official match at the stadium was a 3–3 draw against Rangers. The exact capacity is unknown. After three years playing at a site on Roman Road, Motherwell played at Dalziel Park until 1895. The club had turned professional the previous year, and the ground was considered unsuitable for professional football, with the surface being described as small and muddy. The ground had only one stand, a pavilion based on the west side. Baron Hamilton of Dalzell granted a lease of land in the northern part of his Dalzell Estate, half-a-mile away, where Motherwell built a new stadium, Fir Park, where they are based to this day. The last match at Dalziel Park was against Royal Albert on 31 May 1895, with income raised from the match used to fund the new stadium.The old stadium was demolished and replaced by residential housing.

Fir Park Stadium is a football stadium situated in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The stadium plays host to the home matches of Scottish Premiership club Motherwell and was the temporary home of Gretna for the 2007–08 SPL season. Motherwell moved to the stadium in 1895, previously playing their football at Dalziel Park.

The Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Good Aid, popularly known as Motherwell Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is the seat of the Bishop of Motherwell, and mother church of the Diocese of Motherwell.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Motherwell (Latin: Dioecesis Matrisfontis) is an ecclesiastical diocese of the Catholic Church in Scotland.The diocese, which was erected on 25 May 1947 by Pope Pius XII from the Archdiocese of Glasgow, along with the Diocese of Paisley which was erected on the same day, remains one of two suffragan sees under the archdiocese. On Tuesday 29 April 2014 – the Feast of St Catherine of Siena – Pope Francis appointed Joseph Toal as the fifth bishop of Motherwell. In 2004, the Catholic population, proportionately the largest in Scotland and second largest in Great Britain, was 165,100 from a total population of 633,000 (26.1%). By 2016, the number of catholics dropped marginally to 162,331 but as the total population increased, percentagewise the catholics dropped to 22,8 % of the total population.In 2012 the diocese was served by 65 parish priests, 7 assistant priests and 13 deacons in across its 74 parishes (the number of parishes had reduced to 67 by March 2017). There are currently 35 retired priests from the diocese and 4 who reside in parishes in the diocese. The area of the diocese is 1,178 square kilometres (455 sq mi).

Our Lady's High School is a Roman Catholic secondary school for 11- to 18-year-olds in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, that is close to Fir Park stadium. The school educates around 675 pupils. The headteacher is Dan Cardle.

Motherwell Shopping Centre is an outdoor shopping centre located in the centre of Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is owned jointly by Chester Properties and Columbus Capital, who purchased the site from previous owners CALA Properties on May 2010. The centre is known locally as Motherwell Town Centre.

Airbles is a small suburb to the south-east of Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is mainly a residential area, consisting mostly of a mixture of high-rise and low-rise flats. The dual carriageway B754, known as Airbles Road, passes through the suburb, connecting eastern parts of Motherwell and nearby places such as Wishaw to the M74 motorway. In future, the dual carriageway may become a link road between the M74 and the M8. A section of the town park (the Duchess of Hamilton park) and Airbles Cemetery are also located in Airbles. The suburb is served by Airbles railway station, which opened in 1989, offering services to and from Glasgow Central, lying on the Argyle Line. It is the nearest station to Motherwell landmarks such as the Motherwell Civic Centre and Fir Park Stadium. There were plans to close the station, but nearby residents objected, saying it was a vital transport stop for that area of Motherwell.In 2017, it was reported that North Lanarkshire Council planned to demolish all the towers in its control over the next 20 years (including nine in Airbles) and replace them with modern housing, due to the rising costs of maintenance as the buildings aged, as well as some of the flats being unpopular and underoccupied.

Dalzell House ( (listen) dee-EL) is a historic house in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located to the south of the town, on the north bank of the River Clyde. At its core is a 15th-century tower house, with extensive additions built during the 17th and 19th centuries. In the 1980s the house was restored and divided for sale as eighteen private apartments, while the surrounding Dalzell estate is now owned by North Lanarkshire Council. The house is protected as a Category A listed building, and the grounds are listed on the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.

Airbles railway station serves the Airbles area of Motherwell, North Lanarkshire in Scotland. It is located around 1⁄2 mile (1 km) away from Fir Park stadium, home of Motherwell F.C.

A Memorial to the Spanish Civil War is sited at the Duchess of Hamilton Park in Motherwell in Scotland. It is dedicated to the 40 local volunteers of the International Brigades that fought for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939. 11 of the volunteers were killed in the war. The journalist Ethel MacDonald was the only female volunteer to travel from Lanarkshire to fight in the conflict. The memorial is inscribed with the Republican motto '¡No Pasarán!' ('they shall not pass').The memorial was erected by the No Pasaran Memorial Committee of North Lanarkshire. It was unveiled on 20 July 2013.An annual service is held at the memorial to remember the local volunteers who went to fight for the Republican side in the war. The flag of the Spanish Republic has been flown from Motherwell Civic Centre by North Lanarkshire council on several occasions to remember the volunteers.The memorial was vandalised with the words "Franco" and "vermin" in June 2021.
