Barlow railway station

Barlow is a small village and civil parish located in the Selby District of North Yorkshire, England, about 16 miles south of York. In the 2011 census, it had around 290 houses and a population of 753.The village has very few amenities, but there is a primary school and a licensed social club run by a committee of members. There are three entrances to the village, two of which lead from the A1041 road between Selby and Camblesforth. The other entrance is a single-track road leading from the Selby bypass. The village's two nature reserves offer a network of paths and bridleways for woodland walks but neither allows horse riding. Barlow common also has a private fishing area and information centre. Before the 19th century, Barlow was usually known as 'Berlay' or 'Barley'. The village was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974.

Barlow Church is a former parish church in Barlow, North Yorkshire, a village in England. There was a chapel of ease in the village, dependent on St Wilfrid's Church, Brayton, recorded in 1649. The chapel appears to have become disused following the English Restoration, but the current building was constructed before the end of the century. It was restored and altered in 1774, and again in the 19th century. In the 1970s, it was reordered, and more of the interior was given over to the chancel. It was Grade II listed in 1998. The church closed in 2012, and was converted into a house. The three-bay building is constructed of brick, with a pantile roof. There is a small wooden bellcote atop the south gable, with a lead roof and ornate weathervane. The south, west and north facades each have one two-light window, while the east facade has the entrance door and two windows. Before its conversion, there were 19th century pews, and a lectern and altar of similar date, and a brass war memorial plaque dating to about 1920. The Church of England describes it as "a simple, charming building".

Camblesforth is a village and civil parish in the Selby District of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 Census the civil parish had a population of 1,526, increasing to 1,568 at the 2011 Census. The village is 5 miles (8 km) south of Selby and 7 miles (11 km) west of Goole. It was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974.It has a Methodist Chapel (1894) which is used for Parish Council and other meetings, and two public houses, the Comus Inn and the Black Dog.

The River Ouse swing bridge is a road bridge over the River Ouse in North Yorkshire, England. It was opened in 2004 when the A63 road bypassed the town of Selby, which traffic previously had to go through to cross the river. It is one of several bridges over the River Ouse between York and the mouth of the Ouse, where it joins the River Trent.

Turnham Hall is a historic building in Cliffe, a village near Selby in North Yorkshire, in England. The original Turnham Hall may well have been built by Robert de Turnham, in the reign of Richard I of England. A licence to crenellate was received by John Pylkyngton in 1477. It was a timber-framed building, and in the 15th century it was recorded as consisting of a hall with two chambers, a kitchen, brewhouse, a chapel, and several smaller rooms. It was surrounded by a moat which was visible until the early 19th century. It was rebuilt in about 1600, and again between 1796 and 1802. It was greatly extended in about 1820, with the older section becoming the service wing, and was altered in the 20th century. The building was Grade II listed in 1998. The house is built of brick. It has two storeys and three bays, a hipped slate roof, and a wooden cornice with paired eaves brackets. The central doorway has moulded pilasters, a fanlight and a flat hood on brackets, and above it is a re-set datestone. It is flanked by canted bay windows, and in the upper floor are sash windows. The service wing to the right has two storeys, a pantile roof and sash windows, and the southwest front is rendered. Two ancillary building are also grade II listed. The late-18th century coach house and stable are built of brick with dentilled eaves and a hipped pantile roof. There are two storeys and three bays. In the centre is a segmental-headed carriage entrance and a loft door above, to the left is a window and a doorway, and to the right is an inserted garage door. An agricultural warehouse is also built of brick, with dentilled eaves, and a pantile roof with stone coped gables and kneelers. There are three storeys, and the building contains three doorways with fanlights, and casement windows, and to the right is an external staircase.

Carlton Towers railway station served the village of Carlton, Selby, England from 1885 to 1959 on the Hull and Barnsley Railway.

Selby College is a tertiary college, offering A Level courses through its Sixth Form Academy, work-related vocational courses, apprenticeships, business training and adult education courses. It is located in Selby, North Yorkshire, England. The College is a provider of A levels and vocational education for sixteen to eighteen year olds. Selby provides apprenticeships, higher education including foundation degrees, honours degrees and HND/HNC level qualifications as well as workforce training. The College catchment area is mainly North Yorkshire, but it also stretches into the East Riding of Yorkshire and Northern Doncaster. The apprenticeship and higher education provision draws from the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber and beyond. Selby College merged with Wakefield College in March 2022 to form Heart of Yorkshire Education Group.

Holy Family Catholic High School is a coeducational Roman Catholic secondary school located in Carlton in the Selby District of North Yorkshire, England.The school has capacity for 450 pupils. Currently 444 pupils attend the school.The school was rated as "Requires Improvement" by Ofsted in September 2019. Only 8% of students achieve the English Baccalaureate, compared with 43% of students in the Local Authority Area as a whole. However, performance in core GCSEs is in line with the local average, with 46% of Holy Family pupils achieving grade 5 or above in their English and maths GCSEs compared with 47% in the Local Authority.Previously a voluntary aided school administered by North Yorkshire County Council, in March 2021 Holy Family Catholic High School converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust.The school offers GCSEs and Cambridge Nationals as programmes of study for pupils.

Carlton is a village and civil parish in southern North Yorkshire, England. The village is situated approximately 5 miles (8 km) south-east of the town of Selby on the A1041 road. The parish had a population of 1,934 at the 2011 Census, an increase from 1,829 at the 2001 Census.Carlton was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1 April 1974, when it became part of the Selby District of the new ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. On 1 April 2023, Selby District was abolished and Carlton became part of the new North Yorkshire unitary authority area. Holy Family Catholic High School is a secondary school located in the village. Carlton Primary School, which was called Carlton-in-Snaith Community Primary School prior to 2020, is also located in the village.

Cochrane Shipbuilders was a shipbuilder at Selby. Due to the narrow width of the River Ouse at Selby, Cochrane launched its ships sideways into the river.

Drax power station is a large biomass power station in Drax, North Yorkshire, England, capable of co-firing petroleum coke. It has a 2.6 GW capacity for biomass and had a 1.29 GW capacity for coal that was retired in 2021. Its name comes from the nearby village of Drax. It is situated on the River Ouse between Selby and Goole. Its generating capacity of 3,906 megawatts (MW), which includes the shut down coal units, is the highest of any power station in the United Kingdom, providing about 6% of the United Kingdom's electricity supply.Opened in 1974 and extended in the 1980s, the station was initially operated by the Central Electricity Generating Board. Since privatisation in 1990 ownership has changed several times, and it is operated by the Drax Group. Completed in 1986, it was the newest coal-fired power station in England until it closed in 2021. Flue gas desulphurisation equipment was fitted between 1988 and 1995. The high and low pressure turbines were replaced between 2007 and 2012. By 2010, the station was co-firing biomass. In 2012, the company announced plans to convert three generating units to solely biomass, burning 7.5 million tonnes imported from the United States and Canada. This work was completed in 2016 and a fourth unit was converted in 2018. The company planned to convert its remaining two coal units to Combined Cycle Gas Turbine units and 200 MW battery storage. However, those two coal units were shut in 2021 without converting them to biomass.

The White Rose Carbon Capture and Storage project was a proposed oxy-fuel coal-fired power plant near the Drax power station in North Yorkshire, United Kingdom. It was proposed in 2012 by Capture Power Limited (in partnership with National Grid). This project would have been the first coal-fired power plant to demonstrate the use of oxy-fuel technology for low-carbon electricity at a competitive cost. The proposed 426 MW plant was expected to send 2 Mt CO2/year to an offshore saline aquifer, achieving 90% capture. The Development Consent Order application submitted to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, now Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, was rejected in April 2016. The rejection was on the basis that the project had no route to funding, following the UK government cancelling a CCS Competition in November 2015.
