Knighton Hospital

Knighton (Welsh: Tref-y-clawdd [trɛvəˈklauð] or Trefyclo) is a market town and community on the River Teme in Powys, Wales. It is located on the England–Wales border, and a small part of the town, including its railway station, lies over the border in the Shropshire parish of Stowe. Originally an Anglo-Saxon settlement, Knighton is located on Offa's Dyke, the ancient earthwork that divided the two countries. It later became a Norman defensive border town. It was historically in Radnorshire.

Offa's Dyke (Welsh: Clawdd Offa) is a large linear earthwork that roughly follows the border between England and Wales. The structure is named after Offa, the Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia from 757 to 796 CE, who is traditionally believed to have ordered its construction, although modern archaeological evidence shows far earlier origins and its original purpose is debated. It delineated the border between Anglian Mercia and the Welsh kingdoms (such as Powys) though a 2014 study indicated a roughly late 6th century date for one part of the dyke (Radiocarbon dates are 430–652 CE with 95% confidence) suggesting Offa expanded existing fortifications. The earthwork, which was up to 65 feet (20 m) wide (including its flanking ditch) and 8 feet (2.4 m) high, traversed low ground, hills and rivers. Today, it is protected as a scheduled monument. Some of its route is followed by the Offa's Dyke Path, a 177-mile (285 km) long-distance footpath that runs between Liverpool Bay in the north and the Severn Estuary in the south. Although the dyke has conventionally been dated to the Early Middle Ages of Anglo-Saxon England, research in recent decades—using techniques such as radiocarbon dating—has challenged the conventional historiography and theories about the earthwork and showed that construction was started in the late 6th century, during the sub-Roman period.

Knighton Community Centre is a venue situated in the Powys border town of Knighton. Following an extensive refurbishment in 2017, it has become a hub for a wide range of services, including: District Library in partnership with Powys County Council Community Hub including Tuesday and Thursday Drop Ins Youth Work Project in partnership with Knighton Town Council Volunteer Centre in partnership with PAVO Family Centre and Stay and Play Cohesion and diversity work such as the film Knighton is my home Community Market and shopping events Digital Hub / Business Centre in partnership with Powys County Council Knighton Festival Live music and theatre The Community Centre is a base for services such as the Knighton and Presteigne Leg Club, the Bracken Trust and the RNID (Cymru) Hearing Clinic. The Community Connector who works for Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) is also based here. It offers facilities for hire and has a hall and stage, bar area, kitchen, small meeting room and medium sized meeting room and provides a base for Karate, Teme Spirits, Dance, Fitness, children's activities, weddings and private parties.

Knighton was a rural district in the administrative county of Radnorshire, Wales from 1894 till 1974. The district was formed by the Local Government Act 1894, when the existing Knighton Rural Sanitary District was divided into three: the section in Herefordshire was reconstituted as Wigmore Rural District, that in Shropshire as Teme Rural District, while the remaining section in Radnorshire became Knighton Rural District. The rural district council was based in the town of Knighton which was a separate urban district. The rural district comprised seventeen civil parishes: Beguildy Bleddfa Cascob Discoed Heyope Knighton Litton and Cascob Llananno Llanbadarn Fynydd Llanbister Llanddewi Ystradenny Llanfihangel Rhydithon Llangunllo Norton Pilleth Stanage Whitton The district was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, which completely reorganised local administration in England and Wales. Its area became part of the District of Radnor in the new county of Powys.

Knighton railway station serves the border market town of Knighton in Powys, Wales, although the station itself is located in Shropshire, England (the border is immediately adjacent to the south side of the station and runs through the car park). It lies 32+1⁄2 miles (52.3 km) south west of Shrewsbury (by railway line) on the Heart of Wales Line. The railway station is located below street level at Station Road beside the River Teme and about 1⁄2 mile (0.8 km) from the centre of the town. All trains serving the station are operated by Transport for Wales, who also manage the station.

Nether Skyborry is a Grade II listed country house (near to Skyborry Green) and lies within the parish of Llanfair Waterdine, South Shropshire.

Skyborry Green is a hamlet consisting of a small number of houses and a farm in Shropshire, England, 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Knighton. The hamlet population taken at the 2011 census can be found under Llanfair Waterdine. The Welsh border lies very close. The name is an anglicisation of the Welsh for barn - ysgubor. Skyborry Green lies at between 180m and 200m above sea level on the northern (English) side of the Teme valley. Nearby is Monaughty Poeth farm. The River Teme runs to the south of the hamlet. The Welsh border roughly follows the river here. Less than 1 mile (2 km) southeast is the hamlet of Nether Skyborry. To the northwest is the small village of Llanfair Waterdine and the Welsh village of Knucklas, which has an ancient castle mound monument and railway station, is to the west.

Stowe or Stow is a small village and civil parish in south Shropshire, England. The parish has a border with Wales and the Welsh town of Knighton is less than two miles to the southwest of the village; a very small part of the town (including Knighton station) actually lies within Stowe parish and Shropshire. The population of the civil ward in the United Kingdom Census of 2011 was 140. In the 2021 census the population has dropped to 120 in 60 households. Also nearby is the Salopian village of Bucknell and the Welsh hamlet of Milebrook. The A488 passes through the parish and the A4113 road passes nearby.

New Invention is a hamlet in Shropshire, England on the A488 between Clun and Knighton. It comprises little more than four houses around a cross-roads and a neighbouring farm called The Weir, known in history as the Wear or Ware. Of the four houses, one was a blacksmith's shop, one a pub called the Stag's Head, and one a Methodist chapel built in 1874. It served as one of many local locations for the film Gone to Earth (released 1950), directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The River Redlake passes through. The population as of the 2011 census is listed under Clun.

Caer Caradoc (Chapel Lawn) (Welsh – Caer Caradog) is an Iron Age hill fort and Scheduled Monument in the south-west of the English county of Shropshire, near the town of Clun. It overlooks the village of Chapel Lawn. It is located within an area of Open Access land and can be reached via a public footpath between the farms of Wax Hall to the west and Bryncambric to the east. This hill fort has the same name as another, Caer Caradoc near Church Stretton, also in Shropshire but 16 miles (26 km) to the north-east.

Knucklas railway station serves the village of Knucklas, Powys, Wales, 34+3⁄4 miles (55.9 km) south west of Shrewsbury. The station is located on a steep hillside overlooking the village and operates as a request stop. Passengers wishing to board are required to signal to the driver, while those intending to alight must notify the train staff. After departing from the station in the westerly direction, trains pass over the 190 yd (173 m) long Knucklas viaduct. This is one of the major structures on the route, its 13 stone arches carrying the line at a maximum height of 75 feet (23 m) across the Heyope valley and Knucklas village. The route then climbs sharply from east to west for the next 4 miles (6.4 km) on a ruling gradient of 1 in 60, en route to the summit of the line just to the south of Llangynllo Tunnel. All trains serving the station are operated by Transport for Wales.
