Knappton is an extinct town in Pacific County, in the U.S. state of Washington. The GNIS classifies it as a populated place. It is located not far from the mouth of the Columbia, a few miles east of the Astoria-Megler Bridge.A post office called Knappton was established in 1871, and remained in operation until 1943. The community was named after J. B. Knapp, the proprietor of a local sawmill.

USS Plainview (AGEH–1) was, in its time, the world's largest hydrofoil. Named after the cities of Plainview, New York and Plainview, Texas, she was also the United States Navy's first hydrofoil research ship. Plainview was designed under project SCB 219; laid down 8 May 1964 by the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company, Seattle, Washington; launched 28 June 1965; sponsored by Mrs. John T. Hayward; and placed in service on 3 March 1969. She cost $21 million to construct.Foilborne propulsion consisted of two General Electric LM1500 free-turbine turboshaft engines, derivatives of the J79 turbojets used in the F-4 Phantom aircraft, but during conventional (hull borne) operations she was driven by two diesel engines. Her homeport was Bremerton, Washington. Plainview carried out long range experimental programs to evaluate the design principles of hydrofoils and to develop and evaluate tactics and doctrine for hydrofoils, particularly in anti-submarine warfare, and helped to determine the feasibility of hydrofoil operations in high seas. Plainview was decommissioned at 10:30 am, 22 September 1978, at Pier 7, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 30 September 1978, Plainview was sold for scrapping by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS) on 1 July 1979 to General Metals (now Schnitzer Metals) on the Hylebos Waterway, Tacoma, Washington. She was partially scrapped in 2004. As of 10 April 2019, she lies abandoned on mudflats, on private property, near Astoria, Oregon. In 2019, the Washington Department of Natural Resources expressed concerns about Plainview's derelict hull leaking pollutants into the environment. Plainview traveled on her foils for a total of 268 hours, over her entire lifetime.

Megler is a small unincorporated community in Pacific County in the U.S. state of Washington. Named for legislator Joseph G. Megler, the community is at the mouth of the Columbia River on the north shore (Washington side) of the river. It is the northern end of the Astoria-Megler Bridge, which connects Megler to Astoria, Oregon, a nearby city on the south shore (Oregon side) of the river. U.S. Route 101 and State Route 401 intersect in the community and connect Megler to Aberdeen, Olympia, and Vancouver.

Dismal Nitch is the name of a cove along the lower Columbia River in Washington state, notable as the Lewis and Clark Expedition's last campsite before sighting the Pacific Ocean. Today it is a rest stop on the Washington State Route 401 highway just east of the Astoria–Megler Bridge and is affiliated with Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.

Grays Point is the western, downstream point of Grays Bay, on the north shore of the Columbia River estuary, at river mile 20, in Washington State, United States of America. Grays Point sticks out slightly and bluntly from the greater headland at the west of that bay. It is wooded, and rises to 151 feet (46 m) height. It stands about four miles northerly from Tongue Point, opposite to it, on the south shore of the estuary, and between four and five miles from Harrington Point, the eastern point of Grays Bay.Grays Point was charted and named in 1841 by Charles Wilkes. The name honors Captain Robert Gray who, on May 11, 1792 discovered a channel into the Columbia estuary from the Pacific, entered the estuary, and spent nine days upon it, trading for furs with the local Indians. Years after Gray, on November 8, 1805 the Lewis and Clark Expedition landed at Grays Point on their journey west to the Pacific Ocean and camped there for two nights, less than a week prior to arriving at their destination.

The station is owned by Oregon Public Broadcasting, and airs OPB's news and talk programming, consisting of syndicated programming from NPR, American Public Media and Public Radio Exchange, as well as locally produced offerings.

KMUN (91.9 FM) and KCPB-FM (90.9 FM) are National Public Radio member radio stations in Astoria, Oregon.

The Astoria–Megler Bridge is a steel cantilever through truss bridge in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States that spans the lower Columbia River. It carries a section of U.S. Route 101 from Astoria, Oregon, to Point Ellice near Megler, Washington. Opened in 1966, it is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. The bridge is 14 miles (23 km) from the mouth of the river at the Pacific Ocean. The bridge is four miles (6.5 km) in length, and was the final segment of U.S. Route 101 to be completed between Olympia, Washington, and Los Angeles, California.

KRKZ-FM is a radio station licensed to Chinook, Washington, serving the North Oregon and SW Washington coasts with a Top 40 (CHR) format.

Frankfort is a ghost town in Pacific County, Washington on the mouth of the Columbia River near Portuguese Point. First homesteaded in 1876, a planned community was platted by two promoters, Frank Bourne and Frank Scott (whence the name) in 1890. Together they envisioned a resort community at the location. As there were no roads, and access to the area was only by boat, lots were sold on the premise that the railroad would eventually build a line through the community. A post office, general store, saloon, sawmill and a hotel were built and a newspaper, the Frankfort Chronicle, was established. The financial Panic of 1893 deterred any future investors, and the town took a downhill turn. Frankfort survived mainly as a logging town until the early years of the 20th century. No railroad line ever materialized and Frankfort began fading away. The post office closed in 1918. In 1953, Frankfort was sold to a logging company. The town's last resident died in 1964. Apart from a few derelict structures and building foundations, there are limited remnants of Frankfort. There are no public roads which lead directly to the area and access by foot is extremely difficult.

The Marshall J. Kinney Cannery, located in Uniontown, Astoria, Oregon, United States, between Fifth and Seventh streets, was constructed in 1879 and became one of the city's longest-running salmon canneries. Run by the Astoria Packing Company, of which Marshall J. Kinney was president, the complex quickly became the "largest and most extensive salmon-packing establishment on the Pacific Coast". In 1894, the cannery was completely rebuilt after being burned to the ground. Five years later Kinney became part of the Columbia River Packers Association, joining several other canneries and packing companies. By 1904, the complex supported three production lines; Kinney continued cannery operations until the 1920s when it was primarily used as a central machine shop and warehouse for the Columbia River Packers Association. In 1954, a cargo ship ran into the complex, part of which was lost. Intact portions were used for storage until 1980 and today house shops and small businesses. The cannery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 30, 1989, but was delisted on September 8, 1997.

The MV Tourist No. 2 was a 1924 wooden-hulled car ferry that has served passengers all over the Pacific Northwest. Originally, it took passengers across the Columbia River, with a dock in Astoria, Oregon. It was undergoing restoration in Astoria until it sunk in 2022. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
