Municipality of Kanal ob Soči

Kanal (pronounced [kaˈnaːl] or [kaˈnaːu̯]; Italian: Canale, German: Kanalburg), frequently referred to as Kanal ob Soči ("Kanal on the Soča"; pronounced [kaˈnaːl ɔp ˈsoːtʃi] or [kaˈnaːu̯ ɔp ˈsoːtʃi]; Italian: Canale d'Isonzo), is a settlement mostly on the left bank of the Soča River in the Slovene Littoral, the traditional region in southwestern Slovenia. It is the seat of the Municipality of Kanal ob Soči. It is an important crossing point over the Soča. At its eastern border, on the left bank of the Soča, runs the Bohinj Railway, the railway track linking the Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

The Fifth Battle of the Isonzo was fought from March 9–15, 1916 between the armies of the Kingdom of Italy and those of Austria-Hungary. The Italians had decided to launch another offensive on the Soča (Isonzo) River.

Until 2007, the area was part of the settlement of Gorenja Vas.The local church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and belongs to the parish of Kanal.

The settlement is part of the traditional region of the Slovenian Littoral and is included in the Gorizia Statistical Region.The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Michael. It belongs to the Diocese of Koper.

It is best known for its cement factory, Salonit Anhovo, built in 1921.There is a small railway station on the outskirts of the settlement.
