Kendray Hospital

Kendray is an area in the S70 postal district of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England that lies between Sheffield Road and Doncaster Road, both of which lead to and from Barnsley town centre. The area takes its name from Kendray Hospital which was named after the linen manufacturer, Francis Kendray. After the First World War building of council houses commenced and the Kendray estate was first established.From 1983 to 1986 Kendray was one of four areas in South Yorkshire where the Probation Service ran a victim/offender mediation project (one of the first of its kind in the country).Just under half of the old housing in Kendray has been demolished and replaced with fields, large recreational areas and modern housing. An amphitheatre and playground were built on one of the old sites, and new housing is being constructed on the other remaining sites. There are also plans to build a leisure centre nearby. Recent regeneration has seen new housing replacing old and unusable housing, turning it into a more modern estate. Continued building is ongoing, as of 2008. Current amenities and services available include a play area in the centre, local shopping, a post office, medical centre, schooling for juniors and a football ground with numerous artificial pitches available. Barnsley Academy is a secondary school in Kendray taking up to 900 pupils. The Forest Academy, previously called "Kendray Primary" up until 2013, is also located in Kendray. Within two miles of Barnsley town centre and easy access to the Trans Pennine Trail and the M1 motorway, Kendray is becoming a popular location for the average family.

The Oaks explosion, which happened at a coal mine in West Riding of Yorkshire on 12 December 1866, remains the worst mining disaster in England. A series of explosions caused by firedamp ripped through the underground workings at the Oaks Colliery at Hoyle Mill near Stairfoot in Barnsley killing 361 miners and rescuers. It was the worst mining disaster in the United Kingdom until the 1913 Senghenydd explosion in Wales.

The Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley is a metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England; the main settlement is Barnsley and other notable towns include Penistone, Wombwell and Hoyland. The borough is bisected by the M1 motorway; it is rural to the west, and largely urban/industrial to the east it is estimated that around 16% of the Borough is classed as Urban overall with this area being home to a vast majority of its residents. Additionally 68% of Barnsley's 32,863 hectares is green belt and 9% is national park land, the majority of which is west of the M1. In 2007 it was estimated that Barnsley had 224,600 residents, measured at the 2011 census as 231,221, nine tenths of whom live east of the M1. The neighbouring districts are Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield, High Peak, Kirklees and Wakefield.

Oakwell is a multi-purpose sports development in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England used primarily by Barnsley Football Club for playing their home fixtures, and those of their reserves. While the name 'Oakwell' generally refers to the main stadium, it also includes several neighbouring venues which form the facilities of the Barnsley FC Academy, an indoor training pitch, a smaller stadium with seating on the south and west sides for around 2,200 spectators, and several training pitches used by the different Barnsley FC squads. Oakwell was the first stadium in English football to have a designated stand for disabled supporters.Until 2003 the stadium and the vast amount of land that surrounds it were owned by Barnsley Football Club themselves; however, after the club fell into administration in 2002, the council purchased the main Oakwell Stadium to allow the club to pay its creditors and remain participants in the Football League.

Oaks Viaduct spanned the Dearne Valley, in South Yorkshire, England. The viaduct was 1,087 feet (331 m) long and crossed Pontefract Road at Hoyle Mill, and spanned the Dearne Valley including the Dearne and Dove Canal and the Barnsley Coal Railway. It carried the Midland Railway's Cudworth-Barnsley branch. It opened to goods traffic in 1869 and to passenger traffic in 1870. On the Barnsley side the line gave access to Barnsley Main Colliery. The line also served Monk Bretton Colliery and a stub at the Cudworth end is still used to deliver sand to Refearn's Glass Works at Monk Bretton. The "Cudworth Flyer" local train from Barnsley, connecting with Midland line trains at Cudworth, passed over the viaduct. The service was withdrawn on 6 June 1958, although a goods train from Carlton Yard continued to run until the closure of Court House Goods station.In 1965, the bridge was deemed unsafe, leading to the withdrawal of all train services and its eventual demolition.

The Barnsley Metrodome (Metrodome Leisure Complex) is a sports and leisure facility that was opened in 1989 by Neil Kinnock. The facility is 5 minutes from the Barnsley Interchange and close to Junction 37 off the M1. It is located along Queens Road, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, in England. It is regularly home to major worldwide ten-pin bowling events, such as the Weber Cup and World Tenpin Masters. The Metrodome played host to the 2006, 2007, and 2008 World Tenpin Masters and the Weber Cup. The facility is home to Calypso Cove Waterpark, Metrodome Bowling, and Your Space Metrodome. The facility also hosts events on the Professional Darts Corporation’s Pro Tour. The facility is operated by BPL, a not-for-profit leisure trust established in 1999.

Stairfoot is a ward in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It is perhaps so named because it lies at the bottom of a valley in between the undulations of two small hills on the old road from Barnsley to Doncaster. Stairfoot is surrounded by the villages of Kendray and Ardsley.Stairfoot is known widely throughout South Yorkshire for its roundabout. Controlled by traffic signals, it is notorious for its delays to the local traffic system and has inspired a local song. The ward used to have its own railway station, but this closed in 1957 due to competition from local buses. The area supports over 300 businesses, including retail outlets such as McDonald's, Dunelm Mill and Tesco, along with various restaurants and convenience stores. The Trans Pennine Trail also passes through Stairfoot using the old railway bridges which cross the roads leading to the roundabout, and the old railway bedding which has been mainly tarmacked. It is suitable for cyclists, pushchairs and wheelchair users, and some parts are open to horse riding.
