Arlon Synagogue

Arlon (French pronunciation: [aʁlɔ̃] ; Luxembourgish: Arel [ˈaːʀəl] ; Dutch: Aarlen [ˈaːrlə(n)] ; German: Arel [ˈaːʁəl] ; Walloon: Årlon) is a city and municipality of Wallonia located in and capital of the province of Luxembourg in the Ardennes, Belgium. With a population of just over 28,000, it is the smallest provincial capital in Belgium. Arlon is also the capital of its cultural region: the Arelerland (Land of Arlon in Luxemburgish). In 1794 the Battle of Arlon covers two separate episodes of the French Revolutionary Wars, one in April and the other in May, both at the stronghold of Arlon (also fought over at the First Battle of Arlon the previous year). Both engagements pitched the French general Jean-Baptiste Jourdan against the Austrian general Johann von Beaulieu.

The Battle of Arlon (9 June 1793) saw a French Republican force under the command of Amable Henri Delaage face the Austrian force led by Gottfried von Schröder. The French were victorious though they suffered higher casualties than the Austrians. The action was fought during the War of the First Coalition, part of the larger French Revolutionary Wars. Arlon is located in Belgium, a distance of 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of Luxembourg city.

Bonnert (French pronunciation: [bɔnεʁt]; Luxembourgish: Bunnert) is a sub-municipality of the city of Arlon located in the province of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium. It was a separate municipality until 1977. On 1 January 1977, it was merged into Arlon.

The remains of the former Abbey of Notre-Dame de Clairefontaine are located in Wallonia near Clairefontaine, a Belgian hamlet belonging to the city of Arlon, 3 km from the Luxembourgish town of Eischen.

Guirsch Castle (French: Château de Guirsch) is a château in the village of Guirsch near Arlon, in the Province of Luxembourg, Wallonia, Belgium. The present buildings, surrounded by a large formal garden, were constructed between 1749 and 1763 and are the property of the de Wykerslooth de Rooyesteyn family. There is no public access.
