Wraggborough

The Robert Gibbes House in Charleston, South Carolina, was built in the Adamesque style at least by the time Robert Gibbes, Jr. was occupying it in 1819, perhaps earlier.The land upon which the house was built, at the northwest corner of Elizabeth and John Streets, had belonged to William Wragg and passed to his heirs after Wragg died in 1796. The property was subsequently acquired in part by Gabriel Manigault. It is possible that Manigault, an amateur but successful architect known for his Adamesque designs, had a hand in designing the building before dying in 1809. The property was later reacquired by Robert Gibbes' family and remained in his family until 1863.The house began a Charleston single house with two-story piazzas overlooking John Street to the south. The interior features Adamesque woodwork.

Wallingford Academy was a school for "Colored" children in Charleston, South Carolina. It was organized by Jonathan C. Gibbs a minister with the Zion Presbyterian Church and opened in 1865. David Brown, a clergyman and teacher moved to Charleston with his wife Hughes Brown to serve as principal. The school was founded at Zion Presbyterian Church in 1865 before moving to Nassau Street in 1868. The school and Wallingford Church were incorporated by a joint resolution of the state legislature in 1872. In 1896, nurse training sessions led by Dr. Lucy Hughes Brown included theoretical lectures held in the auditorium of Wallingford Academy. Attempts to hold practical training of African American nurses at the City Hospital and Old Folks Home were rebuffed. In 1897 the Hospital and Training School for Nurses, co-founded by Alonzo Clifton McClennan, was chartered by the South Carolina legislature.

The Second Presbyterian Church is the fourth oldest church in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Gov. William Aiken House (also known as the Aiken-Rhett House, or the Robinson-Aiken House) was built in 1820 at 48 Elizabeth Street, in the Wraggborough neighborhood of Charleston, South Carolina. Despite being known for its association with Gov. William Aiken, the house was built by John Robinson after he bought several lots in Mazyck-Wraggborough in 1817. His house was originally configured as a Charleston single house with entrance to the house from the south side along Judith Street. The house is considered to be the best preserved complex of antebellum domestic structures in Charleston. It was the home of William Aiken, Jr., a governor of South Carolina, and before that the home of his father, the owner of South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company, William Aiken. Mrs. Frances Dill Rhett, whose husband was a direct descendant of Gov. William Rhett, donated the house to the Charleston Museum in 1975. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Since 1995, the Historic Charleston Foundation has owned and operated the Aiken-Rhett House as a historic house museum.

The Elias Vanderhorst House at 28 Chapel Street, Charleston, South Carolina, is a four-story mansion house which was built around 1835 as a home for members of the prominent Vanderhorst family of plantation owners.

The Charleston Museum is a museum located in the Wraggborough neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina. It is the oldest museum in the United States. Its highly regarded collection includes historic artifacts, natural history, decorative arts and two historic Charleston houses. It replaces the Old Charleston Museum that burned down due to unknown causes.

The Joseph Manigault House is a historic house museum in Charleston, South Carolina that is owned and operated by the Charleston Museum. Built in 1803, it was designed by Gabriel Manigault to be the home of his brother, and is nationally significant as a well-executed and preserved example of Adam style architecture. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

On June 17, 2015, a mass shooting occurred in Charleston, South Carolina, in which nine African Americans were killed during a Bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Among the fatalities was the senior pastor, state senator Clementa C. Pinckney. Emanuel AME is one of the oldest black churches in the United States, and it has long been a center for civil rights organizing. The morning after the attack, police arrested Dylann Roof in Shelby, North Carolina; a 21-year-old white supremacist, he had attended the Bible study before opening fire. He was found to have targeted members of this church because of its history and status. Roof was found competent to stand trial in federal court. In December 2016, Roof was convicted of 33 federal hate crime and murder charges. On January 10, 2017, he was sentenced to death for those crimes. Roof was separately charged with nine counts of murder in the South Carolina state courts. In April 2017, Roof pleaded guilty to all nine state charges in order to avoid receiving a second death sentence, and as a result, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. He will receive automatic appeals of his death sentence, but he may eventually be executed by the federal justice system.Roof espoused racial hatred in both a website manifesto which he published before the shooting, and a journal which he wrote from jail afterward. On his website, Roof posted photos of emblems which are associated with white supremacy, including a photo of the Confederate battle flag. The shooting triggered debates about modern display of the flag and other commemorations of the Confederacy. Following these murders, the South Carolina General Assembly voted to remove the flag from State Capitol grounds. At the time, this was one of the two deadliest mass shootings at an American place of worship, the other being a 1991 attack at a Buddhist temple in Waddell, Arizona. Fatalities from two shootings at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and a synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2017 and 2018, respectively, have since exceeded it.

Citadel Square Baptist Church was the fourth Baptist church built in Charleston, South Carolina. The church began as an outgrowth of the First Baptist Church when, in 1854, a dozen members sought permission to establish a new church for the upper peninsula. The new church was to have been known as the Fourth Baptist Church but, when an existing Baptist church closed, leaving only three Baptist churches, the name was changed to Citadel Square Baptist Church. The name refers to the church's location on upper Meeting St., immediately across from Marion Square, which at the time was the location of the Citadel. The Charleston architectural firm Jones & Lee designed the building and construction of the church at 328 Meeting St. began in June 1855. The new building was opened on November 23, 1856. A hurricane in 1885 blew over the original steeple and a year later, the 1886 Charleston earthquake damaged the tower. The tower was repaired and a steeple designed by the Boston, Massachusetts architect Edward Silloway was installed. Following Hurricane Hugo, which blew the steeple off of the church, it was rebuilt at 210 feet, shorter than the steeple of St. Matthew's across Marion Square; the choice was to avoid a race for the tallest steeple.A Sunday school building added in 1891 was replaced in 1921. In 1911 the existing organ was replaced with two new organs (a three-manual great organ and a celestial organ) built by the Moller Company, controlled by a single console. In April 1951, an educational building was added to the campus.The church was the first in Charleston to televise its services, doing so for more than 40 years until ending the practice in 1998.Seven churches have been created under the auspices of Citadel Square Baptist Church including the Emma Abbott Memorial Chapel. Steve Heron has served as Lead Pastor since August 2017 when a church plant merged in with Citadel Square to strengthen the existing congregation.

The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, often referred to as Mother Emanuel, is a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 1817, Emanuel AME is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal church in the Southern United States. This, the first independent black denomination in the United States, was founded in 1816 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mother Emanuel has one of the oldest black congregations south of Baltimore. Black Baptist churches were founded in South Carolina and Georgia before the American Revolutionary War.

The Wragg Borough Homes is a public housing project in Charleston, South Carolina. It is bounded by Drake Street (to the east), Chapel Street (to the south), America and Elizabeth Streets (to the west), and South Street (to the north). The land for the development was acquired in 1939. Before the integration of public facilities, the housing project was meant only for the city's Black residents while the Robert Mills Manor was meant for White residents. The new housing was expected to cost only $2.30 a month for rent per room.Bids for the construction of the housing was due December 11, 1939, for the 128 single-story housing units. The new project was called the Wragg Borough Homes in honor of Samuel Wragg, the previous owner of most of the property. The lowest bid was submitted by the Artley Company of Savannah, Georgia, the same contractor which was building the Robert Mills Manor. The contract approved totaled $344,000.Construction could not begin until housing was available in another development, the Ansonborough Homes, so that those whose houses were being demolished for the new project could be temporarily relocated. To make way for the development, 134 housing units were demolished. A building permit for $3000 of demolition work was pulled in March 1940.A contract for landscaping was awarded to the Carolina Floral Company based on its bid of $9225. Loutrel Briggs was the landscape architect for the plans.The first 18 units were completed in July 1940.
