The Supreme Court of the Dominican Republic (known by its acronym, SCJ) is the highest court existing in the Republic and is, therefore, the head of the judiciary in the country. The Supreme Court is the final court empowered to administer justice, i.e. that its judgments can not be appealed, although they may eventually be reviewed by the same court through the use of re consideration. It is in the highest place in the Dominican Judicial organization over the Courts of Appeal, Courts of First Instance, Peace Courts and special courts and corresponds super general administrative supervision over all courts of the Republic, except the Superior Electoral Court, and the Constitutional Court. It is headquartered in Santo Domingo, capital of the Republic, in the Palace of the Supreme Court in the center of the heroes, adjacent to the National Congress.

Universidad Católica Santo Domingo ("Santo Domingo Catholic University"; acronym, UCSD; also known as La Católica) –is a private Catholic university located in the archdiocese of Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic. The university was established in 1982, with 65 students entering the school in the following year. The university contains 5,000 students and 250 faculty members. It is commonly known as "La Católica", and its population is mostly middle-class students who work and study full-time, and pay their own tuition. Faculties: Diplomacy and International Relations; Odontology or Dentistry; Engineering system; Architecture; Economics; Psychology; Faculty of Law; Tourism; Social communication; Administration; Physiotherapy, Marketing.The university sports department has a soccer team with Prof. Jaime Paez as head coach, Lendz Heriveaux as coach assistant and Serge Junior Fecu as captain. There are basketball and volleyball teams. Both Futsal and regular soccer are played.

The Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) (Autonomous University of Santo Domingo) is the public university system in the Dominican Republic with its flagship campus in the Ciudad Universitaria (lit. University City) neighborhood of Santo Domingo and with regional campuses in many cities of the Republic. It was founded by Jose Gabriel Garcia and Emiliano Tejera in 1866 as the Professional Institute, replacing the former Universidad Santo Tomás de Aquino, one of the first universities of the Western Hemisphere (Americas), which was founded unofficially by a Papal bull in 1538, officially by royal decree in 1558, and closed in 1822. It was later renamed University of Santo Domingo in 1914. In structure, the school followed the model of the University of Alcalá de Henares. The university organized its offerings into four schools: Medicine, Law, Theology, and the Arts. Today, the university has expanded to eight schools: Humanities, the Arts, Law and Political Science, Health Sciences, Economics and Social Sciences, Science, Engineering and Architecture, and Agricultural Sciences.

Santo Domingo, formerly known as Santo Domingo de Guzmán, is the capital and largest city of the Dominican Republic and the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean by population. As of 2022, the city center had a population of 1,029,110 while its Metropolitan area, the Greater Santo Domingo, had a population of 4,274,651. Following his assassination, the city resumed its original designation. Santo Domingo is the cultural, financial, political, commercial and industrial center of the Dominican Republic, with the vast majority of the country' industries being located within the city. Santo Domingo also serves as the chief seaport of the country. The city's harbor at the mouth of the Ozama River accommodates the largest vessels, and the port handles both heavy passenger- and freight traffic.

St. Thomas Aquinas University (Spanish: Universidad de Santo Tomás de Aquino; today the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, UASD), is arguably the first institution of higher education in the Americas. It was founded by papal bull in 1538 in Santo Domingo, in the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, present-day Dominican Republic, although it didn't have the official certification by the king of Spain until 1558. The headquarters of the university was the Church and Convent of los Dominicos. It was closed in 1801 and in 1823, being reopened as a new iteration in 1914.

On 8 April 2025, the roof of the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic collapsed during a live performance by merengue musician Rubby Pérez. The structural failure occurred at approximately 12:44 a.m. AST, resulting in 233 fatalities and more than 180 injuries. There were approximately 515 people in the club at the time of the collapse. It is one of the deadliest non-natural disasters in the country's history.

Torre Caney is the second tallest building in Santo Domingo and the Dominican Republic. At 178 m (584 ft) tall, it is one of the tallest buildings in the Caribbean region. It was the tallest building in the Dominican Republic until completion of the residential tower Anacaona 27. It is located along the Anacaona Avenue, an area of increasing development in Santo Domingo which hosts many of the tallest buildings in the country and the Caribbean.
