Kamayut Township (Burmese: ကမာရွတ် မြို့နယ်, pronounced [kəmàjʊʔ mjo̰nɛ̀]; also spelt Kamaryut Township) is located in the north central part of Yangon. The township comprises ten wards, and shares borders with Hlaing township in the north, Hlaing township and Kyimyindaing township in the west, the Inya Lake, Bahan township and Mayangon township in the east, and Sanchaung township in the south. One of the most prosperous areas in Yangon (a prime upmarket area), Kamayut is also the "college town" of the Yangon. Pyay Road which cuts across the township is lined with many education and media related institutions such as Myanmar Radio and Television headquarters. Yangon University, the University of Medicine 1, Yangon, the Yangon Institute of Economics, the Yangon Institute of Education and affiliated TTC and University of Distance Education, Yangon are all located in the township. The township has twelve primary schools, two middle schools and five high schools.

The University of Medicine 1, Yangon (Burmese: ဆေးတက္ကသိုလ်(၁) ရန်ကုန် [sʰé tɛʔkəθò tɪʔ (jàɰ̃ɡòʊɰ̃)]; formerly the Institute of Medicine 1), located in Yangon, it is the oldest medical school in Myanmar. The university offers M.B., B.S. (equivalent of the M.D.) degrees and graduate (diploma, master's and doctoral) degrees in medical science. The university is perhaps the most selective university in the country, and admits approximately 400 students annually based on their University Entrance Examination scores. The University of Medicine 1 comprises three campuses: Lanmadaw campus (also known as St. John's), Pyay Road campus (also known as Leikkhon) and Thaton Road campus (former BOC College of Engineering and Mining). University of Medicine 1, Yangon is one of five schools in Myanmar recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.

The "Practising School, Yangon Institute of Education"(Burmese: ပညာရေးတက္ကသိုလ် လေ့ကျင့်ရေးကျောင်း), later, "Practising High School, Yangon University of Education"(Burmese: ရန်ကုန်ပညာရေးတက္ကသိုလ် လေ့ကျင့်ရေးအထက်တန်းကျောင်း) (abbreviated TTC Yangon) was the name of a high school in Yangon, Myanmar, which is currently called Basic Education Department Practising High School, Kamayut Township (Burmese: အခြေခံပညာဦးစီးဌာန လေ့ကျင့်ရေးအထက်တန်းကျောင်း၊ ကမာရွတ်မြို့နယ်). Although it is a high school in the technical sense, TTC's student body comprises students from Grade Kg to Grade Twelve or Matriculation, the highest standard in the Myanmar's new education system. The origin of the name of the school comes from the fact that TTC is part of the Institute of Education (former Teachers' Training College), whose trainee teachers are attached to the school as part of their course.

The University of Yangon (also Yangon University; Burmese: ရန်ကုန် တက္ကသိုလ်, pronounced [jàɰ̃ɡòʊɰ̃ tɛʔkəθò]; formerly Rangoon College, Rangoon University and Rangoon Arts and Sciences University), located in Kamayut, Yangon, is the oldest university in Myanmar's modern education system and the best known university in Myanmar. The university offers mainly undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (Bachelor's, Master's, Post-graduate Diploma, and Doctorate) programs in liberal arts, sciences and law. Full-time bachelor's degrees were not offered at the university's main campus after the student protests of 1996. The bachelor's degree was re-offered from 2014 on. Today degrees in Political Science are offered to undergraduate students, as well as postgraduate diplomas in areas such as social work and geology. Initially most major universities in the country depended on Yangon University. Until 1958 when Mandalay University became an independent university, all institutions of higher education in Myanmar were under Yangon University. After the University Education Act of 1964, all professional colleges and institutes of the university such as the Institute of Medicine 1, Rangoon Institute of Technology and Yangon Institute of Economics became independent universities, leaving the Yangon University with liberal arts, sciences and law. In Myanmar, responsibility for higher education depends on various ministries. The University of Yangon depends from the Ministry of education.Yangon University has been at the centre of civil discontent throughout its history. All three nationwide strikes against the British administration (1920, 1936 and 1938) began at Rangoon University. Leaders of the Burmese independence movement such as General Aung San, U Nu, Ne Win and U Thant are some of the notable alumni of the university. The tradition of student protest at the university continued in the post-colonial era—in 1962, 1974, 1988 and in 1996.

Kyandaw Cemetery (Burmese: ကြံတောသုသာန်), located in Kamayut Township, was Yangon's largest cemetery before it was demolished between 1996 and 1997 for redevelopment as the Yangon Drugs Elimination Museum. The relocation of graves was ordered by the Burmese government in December 1996. Descendants of the interred were given one month's notice to move the remains for reburial in Yangon's outskirts, at Yayway Cemetery and at Hteinbin Cemetery in Hlaingthaya Township. Kyandaw Cemetery occupied a 50 acres (20 ha) expanse of land about .5 miles (0.80 km) away from Yangon University. It was established during the colonial era. Kyandaw Cemetery was the city's common burial ground for Burmese Buddhists, but also included Christian, Chinese, Hindu and Islamic cemeteries. The Hindu section of the cemetery covered 1.6 hectares (4.0 acres).In 1991, the Yangon City Corporation (now the Yangon City Development Committee) ordered the relocation of graves at St. John's Cantonment Cemetery to Kyandaw. The graves included those of British soldiers. In 1994, the army moved the remains of the interred from Tamwe Cemetery to Kyandaw to build a supermarket.

Workers' College (Burmese: လုပ်သားများ ကောလိပ်) was an affiliated college of Yangon University. The college, located in Botataung in eastern Yangon, offered undergraduate programs in liberal arts, sciences and law mostly to part-time students. Since 2004, the campus of Workers' College has been turned into the newly created National Management University of Myanmar.

Basic Education High School No. 2 Kamayut (Burmese: အခြေခံ ပညာ အထက်တန်း ကျောင်း အမှတ် (၂) ကမာရွတ်; abbreviated to အ.ထ.က. (၂) ကမာရွတ်; formerly, State High School Kamayut or St. Augustine's School; commonly known as Kamayut 2 High School) is one of the best known public high school located in Kamayut Township, Yangon, Myanmar (Burma). The school offers classes from kindergarten to 11th standard (Grade 1 to Grade 12).

The Universities' Central Library (Burmese: တက္ကသိုလ်များဗဟိုစာကြည့်တိုက်; abbreviated UCL) is a academic library located on the University of Yangon campus in Yangon, Myanmar. UCL is Myanmar's biggest academic library and plays a pivotal role in collecting and preserving historical Burmese manuscripts. UCL has the largest collection of traditional manuscripts in the country, including 15,000 palm-leaf manuscripts and 4,000 parabaiks. The library possesses 600,000 books.

The Yangon University of Economics (formerly the Institute of Economics, Yangon; Burmese: ရန်ကုန် စီးပွားရေး တက္ကသိုလ် [jàɰ̃ɡòʊɰ̃ síbwájé tɛʔkəθò]) is the finest university of economics and business in Myanmar. Founded as the Section of Economics of Yangon University in 1924, the section became an independent university of higher learning in 1964. The University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees and diplomas, mostly in commerce, statistics and economics. It is also the best business school in the country, offering full-time, executive MBF, MHTM, MMM and MBA degrees.The university serves over 1000 undergraduate and graduate students over its three Yangon area campuses: the main campus robbed from Yangon University in Kamayut in the city and satellite campuses in Hlaing (also robbed from Yangon University), and Ywathagyi.

The Yangon University of Foreign Languages (also the University of Foreign Languages, Yangon) (Burmese: ရန်ကုန်နိုင်ငံခြားဘာသာတက္ကသိုလ် Burmese pronunciation: [nàɪɰ̃ŋàɰ̃dʑá bàðà tɛʔkəθò jàɰ̃ɡòʊɰ̃]), located in Yangon, is a university for the study of foreign languages in Myanmar. Yangon University of Foreign Languages is one of the two language universities in Myanmar alongside Mandalay University of Foreign Languages.

Salin Stadium (Burmese: စလင်း အားကစားကွင်း is a multi-use stadium, located in Yangon, Myanmar. The 3,000-seat stadium is smaller but more up-to-date than Aung San Stadium, and is the venue of choice for most national and international level football and track and field competitions.

The Myanmar Mercatile Marine College (M.M.M.C) ([jàɰ̃ɡòʊɰ̃ jèdʑáʊɰ̃ pjɪ̀ɰ̃ɲà tɛʔkəθò]), located in Yangon, Myanmar, is a public institute offering mainly two-year diplomas in mercantile nautical technologies. The institute also offers four-year bachelor's degrees and post-graduate diplomas in select fields.The institute aims to "train seafarers to become internationally recognized marine personnel, so that they can be employed onboard vessels owned by national and foreign shipping companies".
