De Lier (Dutch pronunciation: [də ˈliːr]) is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 5 km north of Maassluis. It also lies about 6 feet (1.8 m) below sea level. The village of De Lier obtained its name from the name of an old river called Lee (De Lier). De Lier used to be a separate municipality. On 26 March 1963 it was granted their coat of arms and on 14 April 1965, it adopted their modern-day flag. On 1 January 2004, it merged with Naaldwijk, 's-Gravenzande, Monster, and Wateringen to form the municipality of Westland. The former municipality covered an area of 8.93 square kilometres. In 2001, De Lier had 9415 inhabitants. In 2003, De Lier had 11,400 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 2.2 km², and contained 3494 residences. The statistical area "De Lier", which can also include the peripheral parts of the village as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 11,470.

Naaldwijk is a former municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. The municipality only existed from April 1, 1817, to August 23, 1818. Before and after that time, the area was part of Sliedrecht. According to the 19th-century historian A.J. van der Aa, Naaldwijk used to be a separate manor to the east of Sliedrecht, but had already been unified with Sliedrecht for so long, that the boundaries of the manor were no longer known.

On 1 January 2004 the municipality of Naaldwijk was merged with the neighbouring municipalities De Lier, 's-Gravenzande, Monster, and Wateringen to create the municipality of Westland. Naaldwijk is now the administrative capital of Westland. The village of "Naaldwijk" has a population of around 15,440. It is situated 1.6km north of Naaldwijk, 6 km east of the beaches at Monster and Ter Heide, 2km southwest of The Hague, 8 km west of Delft and 10 km northeast of Hook of Holland. Mariëndijk is home to the pan European NGO, The Widow's Foundation, a philanthropic network supporting widows with multilingual and multidisciplinary expertise in medicine, law and finance. Royal Flora Holland, the largest flower auction in the world, lies 1.5 km southwest of the hamlet. In 2001, Mariëndijk had 173 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.019 km², and contained 71 residences.
