Westland (municipality), Netherlands

Westland is a region of the Netherlands and lies in the western part of the Province of South Holland. It consists of the municipalities of Westland and Midden-Delfland, and also of the town of Hook of Holland (which is a part of the municipality of Rotterdam). Westland is well known for its horticulture in glasshouses, hence its nickname the glass city.

Naaldwijk is a former municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland. The municipality only existed from April 1, 1817, to August 23, 1818. Before and after that time, the area was part of Sliedrecht. According to the 19th-century historian A.J. van der Aa, Naaldwijk used to be a separate manor to the east of Sliedrecht, but had already been unified with Sliedrecht for so long, that the boundaries of the manor were no longer known.

Naaldwijk (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈnaːltʋɛi̯k]) is a town in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 10 km southwest of The Hague. Naaldwijk lies in the heart of Westland. The largest economic sector is greenhouse horticulture. The largest flower auction site in the world, operated by FloraHolland, can be found in the nearby village of Honselersdijk. Naaldwijk was previously a municipality in its own right, covering an area of 25.33 km² (of which 0.23 km² water). It included the towns Honselersdijk and Maasdijk. On 1 January 2004 the municipality of Naaldwijk was merged with the neighbouring municipalities De Lier, 's-Gravenzande, Monster, and Wateringen to create the municipality of Westland. Naaldwijk is now the administrative capital of Westland. The village of "Naaldwijk" has a population of around 15,440. The statistical area "Naaldwijk", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 17,370.

Honselersdijk is a town in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is home to the historic Huis Honselaarsdijk, former palatial estate of the Dutch Princes of Orange. Huis Honselaarsdijk was one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture and grounds in the history of The Netherlands. Today, only part of the outbuildings remain, and these are referred to locally as "De Nederhof". Honselersdijk is part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 2.6 km (2 mi) southwest of the border of The Hague, with a population of approximately 5,180. The statistical area "Honselersdijk", which also includes the surrounding countryside and part of the hamlet Mariëndijk, has a total population of approximately 7,460. Today, Honselersdijk is home to one of the largest flower auctions in the world, Royal Flora Holland.

Rolpaal is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 9 km southwest of The Hague. The statistical area "Rolpaal", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 40.

Nieuwe Tuinen is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 5 km north of Maassluis. The statistical area "Nieuwe Tuinen", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 140.

Steendijkpolder is a metro station on Line B of the Rotterdam Metro located in Maassluis, South Holland. The station entered regular service on 30 September 2019, with a preview service operated on 28 September 2019. Whereas located on the Hoekse Lijn, converted from a railway, this is the only station of the line which never was a railway station and was constructed in 2019. Steendijkpolder consists of a side platform for westbound services toward Hook of Holland (Hoek van Holland), and an island platform with two tracks used by eastbound services toward Nesselande.

Mariëndijk is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland which lies on the border of Honselersdijk and the grounds of the former Paleis Honselersdijk Huis Honselaarsdijk. Today, the hamlet is a part of the municipality of the Westland. It is situated 1.6km north of Naaldwijk, 6 km east of the beaches at Monster and Ter Heide, 2km southwest of The Hague, 8 km west of Delft and 10 km northeast of Hook of Holland. Mariëndijk is home to the pan European NGO, The Widow's Foundation, a philanthropic network supporting widows with multilingual and multidisciplinary expertise in medicine, law and finance. Royal Flora Holland, the largest flower auction in the world, lies 1.5 km southwest of the hamlet. In 2001, Mariëndijk had 173 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.019 km², and contained 71 residences.

Poeldijk (52°1′N 4°13′E) is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 8 km southwest of The Hague. In 2001, the village of Poeldijk had 5335 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 1.1 km2, and contained 3400 residences. The statistical area "Poeldijk", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 7080.

Westerlee is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 5 km north of Maassluis. The statistical area "Westerlee", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 70.

Maasdijk is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 5 km northwest of Maassluis. In 2008, the village of Maasdijk has 7000 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village is 1.5 km², and contains 4000 of the 7000 residences. The statistical area "Maasdijk", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 4060.

Polanen Castle was a castle located in today's Monster, South Holland in the Netherlands. The ancestral home of the Polanen family, it suffered a siege in 1351 and was demolished in 1394. It was replaced by a small manor somewhat to the south.
