Eleftheres

Nea Peramos (Greek: Νέα Πέραμος) is a town 17 kilometres from Kavala, the capital of the regional unit of Kavala, Greece. Its population at the 2011 census was 3,532.Since 1998, according to the Law of Kapodistrias, seven villages (Nea Peramos, Nea Iraklitsa, Agios Andreas, Eleftheres, Elaiochori, Myrtofyto, Folea) joined in a new municipality which was called Municipality of Eleftheres. The central administration authority resided in Nea Peramos, which is the largest of the villages listed above. The first Mayor of the Community of Eleftheres was Iraklis Karaberidis. At the 2011 Kallikratis reform, the municipality of Eleftheres became part of the new municipality of Pangaio. Nea Peramos is one hour from the island of Thasos, to the city of Kavala, and also to ancient Philippi, which is about 30 km distant.

Oesyme or Oisyme (Attic Greek: Οἰσύμη, Doric Greek: Οἰσύμα) and Aisyme or Aesyme (Ancient Greek: Αἰσύμη) was an ancient Greek polis (city-state) located in ancient Thrace and later in Macedonia. It was within the region of Pieras or Edonis between the river Strymon and the river Nestos. Thucydides mentions it with Galepsus and notes that both were colonies of Thasos that sided with the Spartan army of Brasidas after it had taken Amphipolis in 424 BCE.Stephanus of Byzantium identifies it as the same Aesyme or Aisyme (Αίσύμη) named by Homer in the Iliad as the place of origin of Castianeira, mother of Gorgythion, who was fathered by Priam, king of Troy.The town is mentioned by several ancient geographers including Ptolemy and Pliny the Elder. Diodorus notes the town under the misspelling Σύμη - Syme (omitting the initial vowels). The town also appears in the Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax as Σιούμη - Sioume. It is also mentioned in the Delphic Theorodochoi inscription. It was later renamed to Emathia (Ἠμαθία) after its occupation by Philip II of Macedon. According to Pseudo-Scymnus, it was named Emathia after the daughter of Makesse. It was considered a polis and an emporion at the same time. Athenaeus quotes a passage from Armenidas where Oesyme is mentioned among the places of Thrace famous for the quality of their wines.It is also mentioned in the Lexicon of the Ten Orators and the Suda.The location of the ancient city is identified with the fortified citadel on Cape Vrasidas south of the village of Nea Peramos in the southern part of the bay of Eleutherai.

Aesyme or Aisyme (Ancient Greek: Αίσύμη) is a town named by Homer in the Iliad as the place of origin of Castianeira, mother of Gorgythion, who was fathered by Priam, king of Troy. Stephanus of Byzantium identifies it as the same place as Oesyme, a Thasian colony in Pieris in ancient Thrace.

The Technological Educational Institute of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (TEI EMT; Greek: Ανώτατο Τεχνολογικό Εκπαιδευτικό Ίδρυμα Ανατολικής Μακεδονίας και Θράκης, ΑΤΕΙ ΑΜΘ; formerly Technological Educational Institute of Kavala, Τεχνολογικό Εκπαιδευτικό Ίδρυμα Καβάλας, TEIKAV) was a public institute providing university-level education in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The institute has three campuses; the main campus in St. Lukas, Kavala, and additional campuses in Drama and Didymoteicho, Evros regional unit. The TEI of Kavala had 13,500 registered students in the academic year 2007–08, ranking seventh among the 16 technological educational institutes in Greece in terms of students.

Kavala (Greek: Καβάλα, Kavála [kaˈvala]) is a city in northern Greece, the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia and the capital of Kavala regional unit. It is situated on the Bay of Kavala, across from the island of Thasos and on the Egnatia motorway, a one-and-a-half-hour drive to Thessaloniki (160 kilometres (99 miles) west) and a forty-minute drive to Drama (37 km (23 miles) north) and Xanthi (56 km (35 miles) east). It is also about 150 kilometers west of Alexandroupoli. Kavala is an important economic centre of Northern Greece, a center of commerce, tourism, fishing and oil-related activities and formerly a thriving trade in tobacco.

The Archaeological Museum of Kavala (Greek: Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Καβάλας) is a museum in Kavala, Eastern Macedonia, Greece, located towards the western end of the Ethnikis Antistasis road in Kavala.The museum was established in 1934, and reopened in 1964 in its current premises. The museum as it stands today was built by the architects D. Fatouros and G. Triantaphyllides, professors of the Polytechnic School and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki between 1963 and 1964.The museum has been referred to as the most important archaeological museum in Eastern Macedonia and one of the most important museums in Greece. The museum contains prehistoric artifacts found all over the Kavala regional unit such as in Neapolis (old Kavala), Amphipolis and places such as Oisyme, Galypsos, Dikili Tas, Tragilos, Mesembria, Nikisiani and Avdira.

The Kavala Imaret (Greek: Ιμαρέτ της Καβάλας) is a külliye (a type of Ottoman charitable foundation) founded by Muhammad Ali Pasha in the early 19th century, in what it was then the Ottoman Empire. The complex is located in the old town of Kavala, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. Since 2004, the monument functions as a hotel. It is considered to be one of the greatest landmarks of Kavala, and among the most important Ottoman ones in Greece. It was built in the old town of Kavala, on top of pre-existing Byzantine walls in the Panagia peninsula of the port. Its founder was Muhammad Ali, a Kavala native who later rose to be the de facto ruler of Egypt. It is a large complex, which consisted of madrasas, a mekteb (Quranic primary school), the imaret (soup kitchen), a mesjid (teaching area), a water tank and taps for washing, and several other facilities for the town's Muslim population.

The Halil Bey Mosque (Greek: Τζαμί Χαλίλ Μπέη, from Turkish: Halil Bey Camii) is a historical Ottoman-era mosque in the town of Kavala, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, in Greece. It is now a museum open to visitors.

The Church of Saint Nicholas (Greek: Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Νικολάου) of Kavala is a Greek Orthodox Church in the town of Kavala, in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. It was built during Ottoman period as Ibrahim Pasha Mosque (Turkish: İbrahim Paşa Camii) before it was converted into a church in modern times.

Neapolis (Ancient Greek: Νεάπολις) was an ancient Greek city, located in Edonis, a region of ancient Thrace and later of Macedon. The site is located near modern Kavala. Neapolis was founded by colonists from Thasos, perhaps around the middle of the 7th century BC. Neapolis was a member of the Delian League and entered the Athenian tribute list at 454 BC first by toponym and by 443 BC by city-ethnic name. Recorded a total of fourteen times form 454 to 429 BC, it paid a tribute of 1,000 drachmas a year. It had independence from Thasos as dues of its customs were collected in its own harbour. At one point, property of Neapolitans in Thasos was confiscated by the oligarchs related to a situation from before 463 BC when the Thasian peraia was detached from Thasos. Despite the defection of Thasos from the Delian league in 411 BC, Neapolis remained loyal, causing the Neapolitan oligarchs to flee to Thasos and the confiscation of their property. Neapolis was besieged by the Thasians unsuccessfully, causing the Athenians to praise them for their loyalty and for participating in the siege of Thasos itself in 410 or 409 BC. Around 350 BC, Philip II of Macedon took Neapolis and used it as Philippi's harbor. At the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, the harbor was used as a base by the Republican leaders Brutus and Cassius. It kept its importance as a station on the Via Egnatia through the Imperial and early Christian periods. Acts 16:11 notes that Paul landed here when he sailed from Troas to begin his missionary labors in Europe. From here he went to nearby Philippi.

The Kavala Municipal Museum opened in 1986 in a two-story neoclassical building in Kavala city centre, very close to the Town Hall. Early in 2001, the museum moved to a tobacco warehouse, in Kapnergati Square, a much larger space. The museum includes a gallery of modern art (the museum has over a hundred works by such artists as Panos Gravalos, Stathis Haradzidis, Meropi Preka, Dimitris Kakoulidis, Klearhos Loukopoulos), a gallery of local painters (Vassikaridis, Miltonas and others) and the archive and sculpture gallery of Greek-born US sculptor Polygnotos Vagis. Vagis was born in 1894 on Thasos, but emigrated to America, where he became a sculptor. He is regarded as one of the most outstanding sculptors of the twentieth century. He died in 1965 and bequeathed his personal collection of sculpture to the Greek state. It includes his Moons, Cyclops (1939, stone), Prophet (1925, marble), Groundhog (1933, chestnut), and Kouroi (plaster). Much of his work is also exhibited in the Polygnotos Vagis Municipal Museum at his birthplace of Potamia, on the island of Thasos. Between the ground floor and the first floor, appropriately designed showcases display a collection of birds which was assembled by Dr Anastassios Hourmouziadis and includes many species from the Nestos wetland, some now extinct. The Folklore Museum occupies the first floor, with exhibits that include folk costumes (mainly of the Sarakatsani), jewelry, embroidery, everyday utensils, tools of various trades, porcelain and metal stoves and gramophones. The museum has run a number of educational programmes for schoolchildren on the themes of folklore and environmental awareness. The museum also houses the city's history archive, which contains material from the Greek and British Foreign ministries, the archive of the Workers Centre and an archive of photographs and cinema films connected with the history of Kavala.

The Aqueduct of Kavala, popularly known as the Kamares (Greek: Καμάρες, "arches"), is a well-preserved aqueduct in the city of Kavala, Greece, and is one of the city's landmarks. While the aqueduct is of Roman origin, the present structure built by the Ottomans in the 16th century. A Byzantine barrier wall of the early 14th century, built as part of the fortifications on the Acropolis of Kavala, probably also functioned as an aqueduct. If so, it would have been a rare example of a Byzantine aqueduct, since Byzantine cities more typically used wells and cisterns rather than either maintaining existing Roman aqueducts or building new ones. The barrier wall was replaced with the present arched aqueduct during Suleiman the Magnificent's repair and improvement of the Byzantine fortifications. Some authors date that construction to the time of the 1522 Siege of Rhodes, but a more likely date is between 1530 and 1536. As late as 1911, it supplied the city with drinking water from Mount Pangaeus.
