Magnolia Heights Historic District

DeSoto Site Historic State Park is a Florida state park located in Tallahassee, Florida. It consists of 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land near Apalachee Parkway, including the residence of former Governor John W. Martin. The site is intended to initiate research and education on nearly four centuries of recorded history beginning with Hernando de Soto's use of the site as a winter encampment in 1539. There is an exhibit of items found at the site in the Governor Martin House.A 1998 historical marker at the site reads: In 1539, a Spanish expeditionary force led by Hernando de Soto landed in the Tampa Bay area. Nearly 600 heavily armed adventurers traveled more than 4000 miles from Florida to Mexico intending to explore and control the Southeast of North America. The route of de Soto has always been uncertain, including the location of the village of Anhaica, the first winter encampment. The place was thought to be in the vicinity of present day Tallahassee, but no physical evidence had ever been found. Calvin Jones’ chance discovery of 16th century Spanish artifacts in 1987 settled the argument. Jones, a state archaeologist, led a team of amateurs and professionals in an excavation which recovered more than 40,000 artifacts. The evidence includes links of chain mail armor, copper coins, the iron tip of a crossbow bolt, Spanish olive jar shards, and glass trade beads. The team also found the jaw bone of a pig. Pigs were not native to the New World and historical documents confirm that the expedition brought swine. These finds provided the physical evidence of the 1539-40 winter encampment, the first confirmed de Soto site in North America. From this location, the de Soto expedition traveled northward and westward making the first European contact with many native societies. Within two centuries, most of the southeastern native cultures were greatly diminished. This is the site of the First Christmas celebrated in what would be the United States at the Hernando de Soto Winter encampment in 1539.

The Smoky Hollow Historic District is a U.S. historic district (designated as such on October 27, 2000) located in Tallahassee, Florida. The district is bounded by East Lafayette Street, CSX RR tracks, Myers Park and Myers Park Lane. It contains 14 historic buildings and 3 structures. On January 14, 2009, a decrease in the district's boundary was implemented.

The Gov. John W. Martin House (also known as Apalachee) is a historic house in Tallahassee, Florida. The residence of governor John W. Martin, it is located within the borders of DeSoto Site Historic State Park. On January 6, 1986, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Leon High School is a public high school in Tallahassee, Florida, United States. It is the oldest public high school in the state, and is a part of the Leon County Schools System.

The Brokaw-McDougall House is a historic mansion in Tallahassee, Florida. Built in 1856, it is located at 329 North Meridian Road. On July 24, 1972, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The house was begun in 1856 and completed in 1860 by Peres Bonney Brokaw who had moved to Florida from New Jersey in 1850. His daughter eventually inherited the house; the reference to McDougall in the house's name comes from that daughter's married name. The house was sold to Florida in 1973 and is used as the offices of the Historic Tallahassee Preservation Board.

The John Gilmore Riley House is a historic home in Tallahassee, Florida. It is located at 419 East Jefferson Street. On August 1, 1978, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is now known as the John G. Riley Center/Museum of African American History and Culture.

Cascades Park is a 24-acre (97,000 m2) park along the stream known as the St. Augustine Branch in Tallahassee, Florida, south of the Florida State Capitol. It is a Nationally Registered Historic Place because it influenced the territorial government's choice of the capital city's location. It also contains Florida's Prime meridian marker monument which is the foundation point for most land mapping throughout Florida.The park as conceived in 1971 had a stream and shallow waterfalls but it closed because of soil contamination and toxic waste left buried by the gasification plant that once occupied the site. It was cleaned up with Department of Environmental Protection funding in 2006 and construction on the new park was initiated in 2010 using money from the penny sales tax. The newly designed Cascades Park opened in 2014. Features of the new park include the Capital City Amphitheater, a fountain with light, music, splash pads, and ponds, and boulder climbing, beachscape and outdoor classroom area known as Discovery at Cascade Park that was privately funded.

The Tallahassee meridian, in longitude 84° 16′ 37.59″ west from the prime meridian at Greenwich, runs north and south from the initial point on the base line at Tallahassee, in latitude 30° 26′ 04.12″ north, and as a principal meridian governs the surveys in Florida and Alabama as part of the Public Land Survey System. The "Tallahassee meridian" survey monument (see survey marker) is located at the intersection of these lines of longitude and latitude (the longitude line being the "Tallahassee meridian" and the latitude line being the "Tallahassee Parallel" or "Tallahassee Base Line"). This survey monument serves as the initial point for U.S. government surveys in the state of Florida. The 6 mile × 6 mile townships originate from here and are numbered by township (see survey township) depending upon whether they are north or south of this point, and are numbered by "range" depending upon whether they are east or west of this point. Thus, Township 3 South Range 26 East would extend from approximately 12 to 18 miles South of the monument, and would be positioned from approximately 150 to 156 miles East of the monument. Each township/range is then divided into 36 sections of 1 mile by 1 mile each. This survey monument can be found in Cascades Park near the amphitheater. The monument originally marked the southwest corner of a section of land given in gratitude by the United States to Marquis de la Fayette (see Lafayette Land Grant) — his lands being part of Township 1 North Range 1 East. The Old City Waterworks is a historic site in Tallahassee, Florida. It is located at East Gaines and South Gadsden Streets. On January 31, 1979, it was added to the US National Register of Historic Places. Prior to the Old City Waterworks, water was obtained from springs. By 1890 public works for water was needed for firefighting and the health of Tallahassee's citizens and the Old City Waterworks was built in 1904 on Gaines Street. The current building was remodeled in the 1920s to 1930s and closed in 1980.Currently the building is under construction and planned for adaptive reuse as Amicus Brewing Ventures, a craft beer taproom and brewery.

The Calhoun Street Historic District is a U.S. historic district (designated as such on October 24, 1979) located in Tallahassee, Florida. The district is on Calhoun Street between US 90 and SR 61. It contains 16 historic buildings. The district is considered to be one of the oldest standing residential neighborhoods in Tallahassee, dating to the 1840s. Houses on Calhoun Street were primarily built in the periods of 1841-1860 and 1879-1912, at which time the street was nicknamed the "Gold Dust" street for its prosperous residents.

The David S. Walker Library was a private subscription library in Tallahassee, Florida. It was organized as the University Library in 1883. It was Tallahassee's first library. It is now a historic library building named for Governor David S. Walker, the eighth governor of Florida, who served from 1865 through 1868. It is located 209 East Park Avenue. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The library building is one of 65 Leon County properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places.In 2018, it has no book collection nor has for many years, nor has it any library function, since the founding of the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library in 1956. The library building has served as the meeting place for the board of Springtime Tallahassee since 1977. Throughout the 1980s and 90s the Library building served as a rentable space. The top level was a large open room with wooden floors, and served as a space for dance teams and instructors providing lessons and scheduling rehearsals in ballroom, tap, and other dance disciplines for many years.

The Tallahassee Historic District Zones I And II is a U.S. historic district in Tallahassee, Florida. One zone runs along Calhoun Street between Georgia and Tennessee Streets; the other along East Park Avenue between Gadsden and Calhoun Streets. The district encompasses approximately 11 acres (4.5 ha), and contains 17 buildings and 1 structure. On October 26, 1972, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Parts of them are included in the Calhoun Street Historic District and the Park Avenue Historic District.
