Île-d'Aix

Basque Roads, sometimes referred to as Aix Roads, is a roadstead (a sheltered bay) on the Biscay shore of the Charente-Maritime département of France, bounded by the Île d'Oléron to the west and the Île de Ré to the north. The port of La Rochelle stands at the northeast corner of the roads, and the town of Rochefort is near the mouth of the river Charente to the south. It was the location of a failed British attack on Rochefort in 1757 during the Seven Years' War, of an attack by HMS Unicorn and HMS St Fiorenzo on a Spanish squadron on 2 July 1799, and of the final surrender of Napoleon Bonaparte on HMS Bellerophon on 15 July 1815. It was also the site of the British naval victory over a French fleet at the 1809 Battle of Basque Roads. A further engagement took place on 13 February 1810, when Lieutenant Gardiner Henry Guion was put in command of eight boats from HMS Christian VII under Sir Joseph Sydney Yorke, HMS Armide under Captain Lucius Ferdinand Hardyman, and HMS Seine under Captain David Atkins, to attack nine French gun-boats in the Basque Roads, capturing one.

Fouras, also known as Fouras-les-Bains (French pronunciation: [fuʁa le bɛ̃]), is a commune in the French department of Charente-Maritime, administrative region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2015: Poitou-Charentes). It lies 34 km south of La Rochelle.

La Pointe du Chay is a limestone promontory, about 5 kilometres from La Rochelle, France, between the seafront of Aytré and Angoulins. La Pointe du Chay is composed of layers of limestone dating back to the Sequanian stage (upper Oxfordian stage) of the Jurassic period (circa 160 million years ago), when a large part of France was submerged. These rocks were formed by the accumulation of organisms falling on the seabed, where they solidified. This happened at the time dinosaurs were roaming the earth. Many of these layers are especially visible and easily accessible at La Pointe du Chay, in which are encapsulated many small marine fossils. Layers of thick white rocks, formed during period of relatively warm seas, alternate with highly friable layers containing sands and remains of mud, formed during colder periods, and with layers containing various corals, that were formed during warmer, tropical times.

Châtelaillon-Plage (French pronunciation: [ʃatɛlajɔ̃ plaʒ], also [ʃɑtɛlajɔ̃]), commonly known as Châtelaillon, is a commune in the Charente-Maritime department, administrative region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. It is located south of the city of La Rochelle and is also a suburb. It is twinned with Knebworth, England.

The Charente (French: [ʃaʁɑ̃t] ; Occitan: Charanta [tʃaˈɾantɔ]) is a 381-kilometre (237 mi) long river in southwestern France. Its source is in the Haute-Vienne département at Chéronnac, a small village near Rochechouart. It flows through the departments of Haute-Vienne, Charente, Vienne and Charente-Maritime. The river flows into the Atlantic Ocean near Rochefort.

The canton of Châtelaillon-Plage (French: canton de Châtelaillon-Plage) is an administrative division of the Charente-Maritime department, western France. L'Ecole d'Ingénieurs en Génie des Systémes Industriels, also known as EIGSI (can be translated into 'Industrial systems engineering school'), is an engineering school (grande école) situated in La Rochelle, a town on the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast of France. The EIGSI is a generalist engineering school, meaning that all the students are given a truly multidisciplinary education. In their fourth year, out of five, a specialisation can be chosen between: mechanical engineering, mecatronics, information systems, energy and environment, industrial management. Upon completion of the 5 years of study, and the required industry internships, a Master of Engineering is delivered (equivalent to 'diplôme d'ingénieur' in the French academic system).

Les Minimes, Port de plaisance des Minimes, is the largest marina in France for pleasure boats. It is located in the city of La Rochelle. Its name is derived from the establishment of a convent of the Frères Minimes ("Order of the Minimes Brothers") in this area during the Middle Ages. There are slips for about 3,500 boats. The whole area has seen intense urban development, with the construction of many residential buildings. The marina offers sailing access to the protected Pertuis d'Antioche and its surrounding islands, such as Île de Ré, Île d'Aix and Île d'Oléron.
