Scorton railway station

Uckerby is a hamlet and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It situated at a crossroads on the road between Scorton and Moulton. The hamlet lies 9.2 miles (14.8 km) north west of the county town of Northallerton.

Royal Air Force Scorton or more simply RAF Scorton is a former Royal Air Force satellite station located next to the village of Scorton in North Yorkshire, England. The base was opened in October 1939 as part of 13 Group RAF Fighter Command and a satellite station of RAF Catterick. It was used by the Royal Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force during the war. The famous No. 56 Squadron RAF flew Supermarine Spitfires from Scorton during the Second World War. Also the USAAF 422d and 425th Night Fighter Squadrons were stationed at Scorton flying the Northrop P-61 Black Widow fighter. After the war, it was kept for a while as a Maintenance Unit base, then disposed of in the 1950s. It is now a site of gravel extraction.

Scorton Grammar School is a former grammar school that was located in Scorton village, in Richmondshire, North Yorkshire, England. It was founded by Leonard Robinson who bequeathed money, land and his house so that someone should "teach school in the town of Scorton" The school's Latin motto was Sola in Deo Salus means "Safety in God alone". The school crest was the roebuck (the family crest of the founder). The school was run as a private boys boarding school with day students from nearby villages until the decision was made to accept female pupils from 1989 in order to raise numbers at the school. During the 1991 summer holidays, chairman of the governors John Bell announced, that the school was no longer viable with only 100 pupils. The school was a charitable trust but it was heavily indebted and the lack of new admissions meant that it would be impossible to continue operating and to balance the books. Other small independent schools in the area have also closed over recent years, these include the Assumption Convent in Richmond in 1993 and the Great Ayton Friends' School in 1997.

Bolton-on-Swale is a village and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population of the civil parish to be 70.

St Mary's Church is the parish church of Bolton-on-Swale, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The oldest parts of the current church are the south aisle and south doorway, which date from the early 14th century. The chancel and vestry are 15th century, while the tower dates from about 1550. It was heavily restored by George Fowler Jones in 1857, the work including rebuilding much of the nave, most of the windows, and replacing the roof. The chancel was remodelled in 1877 by Eden Nesfield. The church was grade II* listed in 1969. The church is built of sandstone with Westmorland slate roofs. It consists of a nave, north and south aisles, a chancel with a north vestry and organ chamber, and a west tower. The tower has three stages, diagonal buttresses, a southeast stair turret, a three-light west window, a clock face on the west side, two-light bell openings, with cinquefoil heads, continuous decorated lintels and hood moulds, and an embattled parapet with coats of arms. Inside the church is a 14th-century piscina, in the south aisle. The sanctuary has decorative tiles made by Nesfield with a mural above depicting angels ascending to Heaven, while the Carpenter chapel has similar tiling, with bas relief plasterwork depicting maritime and pastoral scenes from the Bible. In the south wall are part of four Mediaeval tomb slabs, while next to the pulpit is part of an Anglo-Danish cross shaft. There is a large black marble slab commemorating Henry Jenkins, who died at the supposed age of 169.

Bolton Old Hall is a historic building in Bolton-on-Swale, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was originally constructed as a three-storey peel tower, perhaps in the 1380s, by Richard Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton. A two-storey south wing was added, probably in the 16th century, and then in 1680 the whole building was altered, the tower reduced to two storeys, and the windows replaced. It became the dower house for Kiplin Hall. In 1963, it was sold to the Stevenson family, who extended the building to provide five bedrooms, and planted exotic trees in the grounds. In 2021, it was put up for sale for £1.25 million. The house has been Grade II* listed since 1969. A local tradition states that a tunnel runs from the house to the graveyard of St Mary's Church, Bolton-on-Swale. The house is built of roughcast stone with quoins, and a pantile roof with stone coping and finials. The tower has been reduced to two storeys and has one bay, and recessed to the right is a later two-storey four-bay wing. In the ground floor of the tower is a sash window, over it is a blocked mullioned window, and above in the battlement are two arrowslits. On the front of the wing is a porch with panelled Tuscan pilasters, a frieze and a swan-neck pediment containing a chamfered panel carved with a fist holding a laurel wreath. The windows are sashes, in the ground floor with chamfered surrounds, and in the upper floor in architraves with keystones. The ground floor of the tower has plasterwork dating from 1680, and one of the first floor rooms also has a 17th-century plaster ceiling.

Moulton Hall is a grade I listed 17th-century manor house in Moulton near Richmond, North Yorkshire, England. The hall is built to a rectangular plan in three storeys with cellar and attics of ashlar and rubble with Westmorland slate roofs. The frontage has five bays surmounted by three unusual curved gables and the sides two bays. The house is surrounded by approximately 25 acres (100,000 m2) of grounds.

Moulton is a small village and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies in a secluded valley between the villages of Scorton and Middleton Tyas.

Begar Priory was an alien priory near Richmond, believed to be in Moulton, North Yorkshire, England where old buildings known as "the Cell" (a common name for a Carthusian monastery) were located. The Carthusian monks who lived at Begar in the time of Henry III of England belonged to the Priory of Begare in Brittany. After suppression the house was granted variously by different kings to first the chantry of St. Ann at Thirsk, then to Eton College, then to Mount Grace Priory, and then back to Eton College again.

The Battle of Catraeth was fought around AD 600 between a force raised by the Gododdin, a Brythonic people of the Hen Ogledd or "Old North" of Britain, and the Angles of Bernicia and Deira. It was evidently an assault by the Gododdin party on the Angle stronghold of Catraeth, perhaps Catterick, North Yorkshire. The Gododdin force was said to have consisted of warriors from all over the Hen Ogledd, and even some from as far afield as Gwynedd in North Wales and Pictland. The battle was disastrous for the Britons, who were nearly all killed. The slain warriors were commemorated in the important early poem Y Gododdin, attributed to Aneirin.
