Wapack Trail

The Wapack Range, sometimes referred to as the Pack Monadnock Range, is a 20-mile-long (32 km) range of mountains in south-central New Hampshire and adjacent Massachusetts, in the northeastern United States. The range is considered very scenic and rugged with many bare summits and ledges ranging from 1,800 to 2,290 feet (550 to 700 m). The 22-mile (35 km) Wapack Trail, one of the oldest interstate hiking trails in the United States, traverses it. The Wapack Range is also the northern terminus of the 90-mile (140 km) Midstate Trail. The range, composed of heavily metamorphosed schist and quartzite, is oriented north–south and is located in the towns of New Ipswich, Temple, Sharon, Peterborough, and Greenfield, New Hampshire; and in Massachusetts, the towns of Ashburnham and Ashby. Notable peaks include, from south to north, Mount Watatic, Pratt Mountain, New Ipswich Mountain, Barrett Mountain, Kidder Mountain, Temple Mountain, Pack Monadnock and North Pack Monadnock. Significant parcels on the Wapack Range have been conserved as state parks, state forests, or properties managed by non-profit land conservation organizations. Miller State Park, the oldest state park in New Hampshire, is located on Pack Monadnock. A defunct ski area on Temple Mountain was acquired by the state of New Hampshire in 2006 and is also slated for state park status. Windblown Ski Area, on and around Barrett Mountain, is one of the oldest operating cross country ski areas in the United States. Conservation efforts on Mount Watatic have resulted in the protection of the mountain from recent attempts to blast a communications tower road to the summit and open the mountain to housing development on the location of another former ski area. The non-profit Friends of the Wapack have been involved in conservation of the range since 1985.

Sharon is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 359 at the 2020 census. It is home to the Sharon Arts Center, part of the New Hampshire Institute of Art.

The Brick Schoolhouse is a historic one-room schoolhouse at 432 New Hampshire Route 123 in Sharon, New Hampshire. Built in 1832, it is the only of the town's three such buildings to survive, and was the only one made of brick. It is also the only school building now standing in the town, since its students have been schooled in neighboring Peterborough since 1920. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, and the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Temple Mountain Ski Area was a downhill, or alpine, ski area that operated from 1938 until 2001 on Temple Mountain in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. During peak operation, the ski area featured a quad chairlift, a double chairlift, and multiple T-bars and rope tows. Like many other small ski areas in the country, it closed due to poor weather, rising costs and changing recreational habits. Its entrance was located on New Hampshire Route 101, straddling the border of the towns of Temple and Peterborough. The 350-acre (1.4 km2) site, of which about 60 acres (240,000 m2) was used for the ski area, closed after the 2000–01 season. John and Connie Kieley of Temple Highlands LLC purchased the ski area in 2003. The quad chairlift was sold to Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Massachusetts, while the double was sold to SkyTrans Manufacturing and was later used as a ride at the Milwaukee Zoo.In December 2007, the State of New Hampshire, with some federal funds, purchased the 352 acres (142 ha) for a reported $1 million, creating the Temple Mountain State Reservation.

The Temple Town Hall, also known as the Union Hall and the Miller Grange Hall, is a historic municipal building in the center of Temple, New Hampshire. Built in 1842, it is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture, which has served the community as a church, Grange hall, and town hall. It continues to be used for social functions. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in June 2007, and the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in April 2007.

Temple is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,382 at the 2020 census. It is home to Temple Mountain State Reservation, formerly the Temple Mountain Ski Area.

The Birchwood Inn is a historic tavern and inn on New Hampshire Route 45 in the center of Temple, New Hampshire. With a construction history dating to the early 19th century, it is an architecturally important example of how traveler accommodations changed in rural New Hampshire in the 19th century. The inn has been identified as "The Birchwood" since 1892, and was the town's only public accommodation for most of the 19th century. The building, still in use as a restaurant and inn, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. In 1981 the inn and surrounding area were used in the filming of the movie Summer, based on an Edith Wharton novel.

Miller State Park is the oldest state-run park in New Hampshire, a state in the New England region of the United States. It is located in the towns of Peterborough and Temple, and is centered on Pack Monadnock, a 2,290-foot (700 m) mountain.

Barrett Mountain is a mountain located in south-central New Hampshire within the Wapack Range of mountains. It lies within the town of New Ipswich and is traversed by the 22-mile (35 km) Wapack Trail. Kidder Mountain is located directly to the north along the Wapack ridgeline; New Ipswich Mountain to the south. The summit of the mountain is mostly wooded. A cross-country ski area occupies the north side of Barrett Mountain. The east side of the mountain drains into the Souhegan River watershed, to the Merrimack River thence the Atlantic Ocean; the northwest side drains into the Gridley River, to the Contoocook River thence into the Merrimack River; the southwest side drains into the Millers River watershed, to the Connecticut River, thence into Long Island Sound.

The Barrett House (circa 1800), also known as Forest Hall, is a Federal style American mansion located in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, part of the New Ipswich Center Village Historic District. It is now a nonprofit museum operated by Historic New England and open to the public several days a year. An admission fee is charged.

Wapack National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge of the United States located in southern New Hampshire. It was the state's first refuge and was established through a donation by Lawrence and Lorna Marshall in 1972. The 1,672-acre (677 ha) refuge is located about 20 miles (32 km) west of Nashua, New Hampshire and encompasses the 2,278-foot (694 m) North Pack Monadnock Mountain. A 3-mile (5 km) segment of the 21-mile (34 km) Wapack Trail passes through the refuge and provides wide views of the surrounding mountains. The refuge lies in the towns of Greenfield, Lyndeborough, and Temple, and is administered by the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

New Ipswich Mountain is a summit within the Wapack Range of mountains in south-central New Hampshire, United States. It lies within the town of New Ipswich and is traversed by the 22-mile (35 km) Wapack Trail. Barrett Mountain is located directly to the north along the Wapack ridgeline; Stony Top, a subordinate peak of Pratt Mountain, lies to the south. The summit of the mountain is mostly wooded, but a number of rocky ledges below the summit offer views of the surrounding countryside. The east side of the mountain drains into the Souhegan River watershed, to the Merrimack River thence the Atlantic Ocean; the west side drains into the Millers River watershed, to the Connecticut River, thence into Long Island Sound.
