Redi (shopping centre)

Majakka (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈmɑjɑkːɑ]; lit. 'lighthouse') is a high-rise building in Kalasatama, Helsinki. It is the tallest building in Finland. The tower is 134 metres (440 ft) tall, making it the tallest building in Finland. It is divided into 35 floors, and contains 283 residences. The 5th floor has a garden open to the public. The tower is conjoined with the Redi shopping centre and the Kalasatama metro station. The complex will include 7 other residential towers, as well as a hotel and offices. After delays related to water damage, the first tenants moved in on November 25th, 2019.

Nereidi (Finnish for "the nereid") is a sculpture by Hans-Christian Berg, located in the Kalasatama district in Helsinki, Finland. The seven-metre-tall sculpture is located at the southern end of the Kalasatamankatu street in front of the Redi shopping centre. The two-part sculpture consists of a concrete wave-shaped pedestal and a figure made of laser cut and painted aluminium plates. The nereids were mermaids in Greek mythology.The sculpture looks different depending on which direction it is viewed from. From afar it looks like it consists of lines, and viewed from the side it looks like a figure gazing off into the distance with its head tilted back. Hans-Christian Berg has used optical illusions in many of his works and made his works by combining different materials and building techniques. The sculpture Nereidi is made of parts ordered from all over Finland, connected by welding, riveting and screwing. The lights were installed last. Building the entire sculpture took four days.The shopping centre Redi, built by the construction company SRV, required artworks in its vicinity. An international contest was held in 2016, requiring entries to be of sufficient size in regard to the buildings and to express joy and cleverness. Artists submitted graffiti, ceramics, paintings, mobiles, a relief, light art and sculptures. The location of Nereidi was chosen by representatives of the architecture bureau Helin & Co who had designed the shopping centre and of the city of Helsinki. The chosen location was intended to become a meeting point. The sculpture was revealed on 2 June 2021.

The Kalasatama Health Station is a service centre for health and social services in the Kalasatama neighbourhood of the Sörnäinen district in Helsinki, Finland. It is located about 200 metres to the east-northeast of the Kalasatama metro station.The Kalasatama Health Station started operations on 5 February 2018. The health stations in Herttoniemi, Kallio and Vallila closed down three days before this and their clients were directed to Kalasatama.In its first months of operation, the Kalasatama Health Station received criticism about its transport connections, the design of its premises including the omission of an X-ray facility and lack of sunlight in its offices, the small amount of time doctors had for their clients, shortage of accessories in reception rooms and the way the Pepper service robot in the lobby kept talking to itself. The staff did not have reception rooms of their own, so some of the doctors had to move their principal tools into whichever office they had to use in a suitcase. Some changes have already been made to the activity of the health station based on the criticism and further action was sought for the problems during late 2018.The sculpture Mobile E & W (2018) by artist Jenni Rope hangs from the ceiling of the lobby of the Kalasatama Health Station. The artwork is divided between two adjacent lobby rooms and is said to be the largest mobile sculpture in Finland.

Kalasatama metro station (Finnish: Kalasataman metroasema, Swedish: Fiskehamnens metrostation - "Fish Harbor") is a ground-level station on the Helsinki Metro, in the capital city of Finland. The station was opened on 1 January 2007, and it serves the eastern part of the central Helsinki district of Sörnäinen's quarter Kalasatama. The area is mainly composed of offices and apartments, with new residential and commercial developments being under construction in the area, including the shopping center Redi. The port facilities previously in the area were moved to Vuosaari Harbour in 2008. Unlike most other stations on the Helsinki Metro, Kalasatama was built while the metro was still running, which made construction difficult. Despite this, service was not greatly affected on either of the lines during the station's construction. Because the new platforms were built on either side of the existing metro track, Kalasatama is one of only two stations on the Helsinki Metro to have two separate side platforms. The other example of this layout on the Helsinki Metro is Itäkeskus metro station. Other metro stations have only singular island platforms. Kalasatama metro station is located 1.1 kilometres from Sörnäinen metro station, and 1.8 kilometres from Kulosaari metro station.

Kalasatama (Swedish: Fiskehamnen; literally translated "fish port") is a neighbourhood in the city of Helsinki, Finland. The area is officially part of the Sörnäinen district; and like Sörnäinen, Kalasatama is located a little more than one kilometre north from the coastal centre of Helsinki, near the district of Hakaniemi, and the east side of Kalasatama borders the sea. Itäväylä, which leads in the direction of East Helsinki, runs next to Kalasatama. The Isoisänsilta pedestrian and cycling bridge, opened in 2016, connects Kalasatama to the nearby islands of Mustikkamaa, Korkeasaari and Kulosaari.Kalasatama is projected to become a rather densely built-up area - about 25,000 inhabitants expected to come there, about as many as in Kallio. In addition, jobs are planned for Kalasatama for about 10,000 people. A concentration of 23- to 35-storey skyscraper towers are coming to the Kalasatama center area around the Kalasatama metro station, which was completed in 2007. Two of the towers, called Majakka and Loisto, and the Redi shopping centre are already completed, while the third tower Lumo One is still under construction. Construction of the third tower, T7, began in the end of 2021.Attempts have been made to build a smart city from Kalasatama that focuses on smart sensors and robotics. Guide robots in the doctors' offices, robot buses and food delivery robots have already been on display in Kalasatama. Formerly there was a cargo harbour in Kalasatama (Sörnäinen harbour) but it was moved to Vuosaari in late 2008. After that the construction of the neighbourhood began.

Elävän kuvan museo (Museum for Motion Pictures) was a museum dedicated to Finnish film culture located in Helsinki, Finland. The museum was operated by the National Audiovisual Institute. The institute's museum collections, which include over 10,000 objects, consist primarily of items related to film making from the 1930s to the present day, including filming and laboratory equipment, projectors, props, costumes, theatre tickets and film posters. The collection also includes material from the pre-cinema era, such as magic lanterns. The museum was located at Vanha talvitie 9 in Helsinki. Its dedicated exhibition space at that location was open from 2004 to June 2015.

Suvilahti (Swedish: Södervik) is a former energy production area in Sörnäinen, Helsinki. It encompasses nine buildings and two large gasometers. Construction of a steam turbine electrical power plant was completed in 1909 and a gas plant in 1910. The buildings were constructed using the then revolutionary steel-reinforced concrete method. The architect Selim A. Lindqvist was influenced by Viennese Jugend architecture. The power plant was closed in 1976 and gas production ended in 1994. Since 1 January 2008 the real estate company Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo began developing, renting and maintaining the facilities. The facilities are being renovated for use by artists and other cultural activities. Suvilahti is already home for photography studios, artists, writers, production companies and advertising agencies. The large courtyard is used for outdoor events. Kiinteistö Oy Kaapelitalo is owned by the City of Helsinki. The company is also responsible for the facilities at Kaapelitehdas (Cable Factory) in Ruoholahti, Helsinki.

Isoisänsilta (Swedish: Farfarsbron) is a pedestrian and cycling bridge in Helsinki, Finland, opened in June 2016.The bridge connects the Kalasatama neighbourhood on the Helsinki mainland to the island of Mustikkamaa and, via it, to the islands of Korkeasaari and Kulosaari.The total length of the bridge is c. 170 metres (560 ft), including the 144 metres (472 ft) main span. The minimum width of the deck is 4 metres (13 ft), which at the Kalasatama end widens and splits into two lanes separated by the central bridge arch. Conversely, at the Mustikkamaa end, the arch splits into two supports on either side of the central bridge deck. The bridge was designed by the civil engineering firm Pontek, and is based on their winning entry, titled Tiikerihai ("Tiger Shark"), into the design contest held by the City of Helsinki in 2011. Construction began in 2014 and was completed in 2016, with the bridge opening to traffic on 1 June 2016.The bridge is named after the Isoisänniemi promontory of Mustikkamaa, and its name literally translates as "Grandfather's Bridge".Some locals have taken to climbing on top of the bridge arch, in a number cases jumping off into the sea approximately 14 metres (46 ft) below, which the police and rescue service strongly advice against as dangerous.In 2017, the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers chose Isoisänsilta as the 'Bridge of the Year'.

Sompasaari (Swedish: Sumparn) is an island on the Kruunuvuorenselkä water area in the Sörnäinen district in Helsinki, Finland. On the southern side of the Nihdinkanava channel built in the middle of Sompasaari is the former island of Nihti. The island was originally connected to the continent with reclaimed land and the Sörnäinen Harbour was built on top of it. Because of this, the entire harbour has been referred to as Sompasaari. Signs on roads leading to the harbour used the name Sompasaari exclusively, with an icon representing a cargo harbour. Harbour facilities in Sörnäinen ended in late 2008 when they moved to the new Vuosaari Harbour. In 2016 the island was converted to a residential area and it was separated from nearby Kalasatama by digging a new channel called Sompasaarenkanava between them.

Sosiaalikeskus Satama (Harbor Social Center) was a social center in Helsinki, Finland, opened in April 2009 and evicted August 2011.

Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, commonly shortened to Tuska (Finnish: pain, agony), is a Finnish heavy metal festival taking place annually in Helsinki. The first Tuska took place in 1998 and the festival has since grown larger every year. The location of the festival has been in Kaisaniemi park in the middle of the city from 2001. However, since 2011, Tuska has taken place at the Suvilahti event field in the Kalasatama neighbourhood of the Sörnäinen district. The festival dates have always been in either June or July. In recent years the attendance has grown and the festival has drawn up to 43,000 people in 2019. In 2006, the festival was almost sold out and over a combined three-day total of 33,000 attendees arrived to watch 32 artists, including for example Anathema, Celtic Frost, Opeth, Sodom, Venom, and Finland's own Amorphis and Sonata Arctica. There were three stages in Tuska: Inferno, Sue, and the main stage, Radio Rock (Radio City until 2007). In 2019 these three stages are named Inferno, Helsinki and Radio Rock Main Stage.

Teurastamo (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈteu̯rɑstɑmo]; literally meaning "abattoir") is a public area managed by Tukkutori in Hermanni, Helsinki, Finland, which hosts events, restaurant and bar operations and other urban culture. The area is located along the Työpajankatu street near the Kalasatama area.The name of the area, Teurastamo, is derived from the city's former slaughterhouse, designed by architect Bertel Liljequist and opened in 1933. The slaughterhouse closed in 1992 and has since housed smaller butchers, bakeries and other food and flower businesses. The area was officially opened to the general public in the autumn of 2012.Teurastamo is run by more than a dozen active players, from distilleries to restaurants and coffee roasters. Notable restaurants in the area include the Restaurant Kellohalli, the Restaurant Palema, and Roslund, the "Gate of Teurastamo", known for its burgers. Teurastamo also includes a yard and barbecue for free use all year round by the townspeople, a bicycle repair point, a sack-growing area and a sauna for rent. A variety of free events are held in Teurastamo's yard, such as picnics, a farmers market-style markets and flea markets.
