Villa Mordoch

The Municipal Art Gallery of the Municipality of Thessaloniki in Central Macedonia, Greece was founded in 1966 as an offshoot of the Municipal Library. Since 1986 it has been housed in the Villa Mordoch on Vassilissis Olgas Avenue, a mansion designed by the architect Xenophon Paionidis in the eclectic style in 1905 and owned by the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Since 2013 it is housed in Villa Bianca, also on Vassilissis Olgas Avenue. It also uses the Makridis Room near the Posidonio sports centre on the sea front and the old Archaeological Museum (Yeni Cami) as permanent exhibition spaces. The gallery has more than 1,000 works in its collection, and these are divided into the Thessalonian Artists Collection (3 generations: 1898–1922, 1923–40, 1941–67), the Modern Greek Engraving Collection, the Collection of Byzantine and Postbyzantine Icons, which covers a period of six centuries, the Modern Greek Art Collection, and the Sculpture Collection. The gallery organises regular (mainly retrospective) exhibitions of Greek artists, produces numerous publications, has a specialised library-cum-reading-room, and offers guided tours for the public (booked in advance). Since 1986 it has held 55 exhibitions of Greek and foreign artists. One of its aims is to jointly organise exhibitions with major visual arts institutions in Greece and abroad. Thus it has presented such artists as Max Ernst and Nikos Engonopoulos (in 1997), Theofilos Hatzimichail (in 1998), and, for the first time in Greece, the works of Nikolaos Gyzis owned by his family (in late 1999). The latter include drawings and oil paintings from Gyzis’’s travels in Greece, Asia Minor, and Germany, family portraits and scenes, allegorical subjects, genre paintings, and still lives. The immediate aims of the Municipal Gallery include converting the second and third floors of the Villa Bianca into permanent exhibition spaces for works by Thessalonian artists and its collection of Byzantine icons.

Villa Bianca or Villa Fernandez is the name of a famous mansion in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece. It is located in Vassilisis Olgas street and was built between 1911 and 1913 as a residence for Dino Fernandez Diaz and his family. The architect was Pietro Arrigoni (variously also spelled: Piero/Pierro Arigon/Arrigon/Arigoni).Of Sephardi (Spanish) Jewish origin, Fernandez was a wealthy merchant and industrialist of the city. The villa passed to his daughter, where she lived with her Christian husband, and was later confiscated and used by the Germans during the Axis occupation of Greece. To escape from the Nazis, Dino Fernandez Diaz, with other members of his family, fled to Italy, but they were murdered in 1943 by the German SS near Como Lake. The building has elements of eclecticist architecture, like many other buildings of that period in the city. Since 2013 it houses the Municipal Art Gallery.

The Allatini Mills is a large former industrial area in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece near Kalamaria district. The name comes from the famous Allatini flourmills founded by the Allatini family in the late 19th century. Moses Allatini operated a roller mill and pottery; his sons founded the Fratelli Allatini company. In 1854 they built the first steam mill in Thessaloniki, together with Darblay de Corblay; they acquired the whole property in 1882.The present-day central building of the Mills was constructed in 1898 according to plans by Vitaliano Poselli after the previous building burnt down. It was inaugurated on 19 September 1900. The building complex includes the administration building (old residence), warehouses, refrigeration areas and the roller mill building, surrounded by the boiler room, the machine shop and the chimney of Belgian construction. The Allatini Mills was considered "one of the largest, if not the largest, industrial buildings in the Orient, and Poselli's most impressive work".The historical complex, an example of industrial archeology, remains abandoned and awaiting redevelopment. It is characterized as historical scheduled monument and there are various plans for its restoration. The new Allatini industrial facilities are located in Sindos.

25 Martiou (Greek: 25ης Μαρτίου, literally 25th of March) is an under-construction metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. The station takes its name from a nearby major road, which commemorates the traditional date of the start of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. It is expected to enter service in 2023.Travelling on Line 1 or Line 2 from N. Sid. Stathmos, 25 Martiou is the last station at which the two lines share tunnels. From here eastwards, Line 1 continues to Nea Elvetia (and Pylaia depot) and Line 2 to Mikra. This station also appears in the 1988 Thessaloniki Metro proposal. In older iterations of the Thessaloniki Metro Lines Development Plan, the station is listed as Patrikiou, named after Minas Patrikios (el), a lawyer who in 1925 became the first elected Mayor of Thessaloniki. In the 1988 proposal, Patrikiou and 25 Martiou are separate stations.

Thessaloniki Concert Hall (Greek: Μέγαρο Μουσικής Θεσσαλονίκης) is a centre for the performing arts in Thessaloniki, Greece. It opened in 2000 on land donated by the Greek state. The complex has two main buildings: M1, with an auditorium that seats 1400; and M2, in more contemporary style by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, with a number of smaller performance spaces.Artistic director of the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, whose three-year term begins on January 1, 2021, is Christos Galileas, associate professor of violin at Georgia State University.

The Cultural Center of the National Bank of Greece in Thessaloniki (Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο του Μ.Ι.Ε.Τ. στη Θεσσαλονίκη) is a museum in Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Greece. It belongs to the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation.

Villa Allatini (Greek: Βίλλα Αλλατίνι) is a three-storey baroque building on Vasilissis Olgas Avenue in the area of Depot in the east of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Greece. It was constructed in 1898 when Thessaloniki was part of the Ottoman Empire.

Analipseos (Greek: Αναλήψεως, literally Ascension) is an under-construction metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. It is expected to enter service in 2023. This station also appears in the 1988 Thessaloniki Metro proposal.

Voulgari (Greek: Βούλγαρη) is an under-construction metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1. The station is named after Dimitrios Voulgaris, eight-time Prime Minister of Greece between 1855 and 1875. It is expected to enter service in 2023.This station also appears in the 1988 Thessaloniki Metro proposal.

Nomarhia (Greek: Νομαρχία, literally Prefectural Administration) is an under-construction metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 2. The station is named after the nearby Villa Allatini, which housed the administrative headquarters of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki (Greek: Νομαρχία Θεσσαλονίκης, Nomarhia Thessalonikis). Prefectures were abolished in 2010 and the Villa now houses the regional administration of Central Macedonia, but the station name has remained. It is expected to enter service in 2023.

Fleming (Greek: Φλέμιγκ) is an under-construction metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. The station is named after the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming. During construction, a Roman cemetery and a small settlement were found, and it is designated as a low-importance archaeological site by Attiko Metro, the company overseeing its construction. It is expected to enter service in 2023.This station also appears in the 1988 Thessaloniki Metro proposal.

The Folk Life and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia and Thrace is located in Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, Greece. It was founded in 1973 by the Macedonian Educational Association and is housed in the building known as Old Government House or Villa Modiano, which was built in 1906 by the architect Eli Modiano, on a 5 hectare plot of land by the sea, for the banker Jacob Modiano. The museum is on four levels, with a semi-basement, two floors, and an attic. Architecturally it is an eclectic structure strongly influenced by Art Nouveau. Particularly impressive is the double loggia with a view of the sea. The museum collects, researches, and studies the remnants of traditional culture in Macedonia and Thrace and presents them to the public in temporary exhibitions. The museum's collections consist of some 15,000 objects (woven textiles, embroidery, local costumes, tools, weapons, domestic articles, musical instruments and woodcarving, woodworking and metalworking equipment). It also has a specialized library, a photographic archive, a record library and a sound library.
