Dömitz

The Elde (German pronunciation: [ˈɛldə]) is a river in northern Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a few km in Brandenburg), a right tributary of the Elbe. Its total length is 220 kilometres (140 mi). The Elde originates near Altenhof, south of Malchow. It first flows southeast towards the southern end of Lake Müritz, which it enters at Vipperow. It flows out of the Müritz at its northern end, near Waren. It turns west, and flows through a series of small lakes, and along the town of Malchow, until the Plauer See. It flows out of the Plauer See at Plau am See, and continues west and southwest through Lübz, Parchim, Neustadt-Glewe, Grabow and Eldena, and flows into the Elbe at Dömitz. Near Eldena, the Alte Elde branches off and flows into the Löcknitz (another tributary of the Elbe) near Eldenburg, part of Lenzen (Elbe). For much of its length, 180 kilometres (110 mi), it forms the navigable Müritz-Elde-Wasserstraße, with 17 locks. The Elde is murky, due to the fast erosion of the valley around it.

The Dömitz Railway Bridge is a partially complete railway bridge over the Elbe River near the town of Dömitz, Germany. As constructed, it had a length of 1,000 metres and was the longest railway bridge in Germany at that time (in 1873). It was part of the Wittenberge–Buchholz railway.

Rüterberg is a Stadtteil of Dömitz in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The community lies in the former East Germany on a portion of the Elbe River that formed part of the border with the former West Germany. By the end of the communist era, Rüterburg was surrounded by a wall that completely cut the community off from the rest of East Germany. From 1988 to 1989, the local residents, led by Hans Rasenberger, raised the idea of creating a free town, with the powers of establishing their own laws, breaking their ties with East Germany. The "Republic" was proclaimed by an assembly of 90 citizens on 8 November 1989, just a day before the fall of the Berlin wall. On 14 July 1991, the secretary of state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern acknowledged the right of the people of Rüterberg to use the title of Dorfrepublik (Village-Republic).

Karenz is a municipality in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.

Gorleben is a small municipality (Gemeinde) in the Gartow region of the Lüchow-Dannenberg district in the far north-east of Lower Saxony, Germany, a region also known as the Wendland. Gorleben was first recorded as a town by the rulers of Dannenberg in 1360; there was a fort on the site. The name "Gorleben" probably comes from Goor ("silt"; in Slavic, however, Gor means "mountain") and leben ("heritage"). Gorleben is known as the site of a controversial radioactive waste disposal facility, currently used as an intermediate storage facility initially planned to serve with the salt dome Gorleben as a future deep final repository for waste from nuclear reactors. As of September 28, 2020 this is no longer the case as the entire area has been deemed unfit by 70 geologists in a national geographic survey for final repositories. It has attracted frequent protests from environmentalists since the 1970s.
