In England, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are designated by Natural England, which is responsible for protecting England's natural environment. Designation as an SSSI gives legal protection to the most important wildlife and geological sites. As of May 2020 there are 163 SSSIs in Norfolk, out of which 123 are biological, 25 are geological and 15 are both biological and geological. Sixty-one sites are Special Areas of Conservation, forty-four are Special Protection Areas, thirty-two are Ramsar sites, forty are Geological Conservation Review sites, thirty-five are Nature Conservation Review sites, eighteen are national nature reserves, ten are local nature reserves, twenty-eight are in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, one is on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens and three contain scheduled monuments. Twenty-two sites are managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, one by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, three by the National Trust, one by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and one by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust. Local authorities have a duty to care for them, and can apply local bye-laws to manage and protect them.As of October 2018, there are 27 LNRs in Norfolk, seven of which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest, three are Special Areas of Conservation, three are Special Protection Areas, one is a Ramsar site, one is a Geological Conservation Review site, one is a Nature Conservation Review site, one is a Scheduled Monument, two are managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust and one by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

Rosie Curston's Meadow is a 2.3-hectare (5.7-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Mattishall in Norfolk.This unimproved calcareous clay meadow is managed by cattle grazing. It has over sixty grass species and a rich variety of herbs, including green-winged orchid, adder's tongue, bee orchid, twayblade and yellow rattle.The site is private land with no public access.

Badley Moor is an 18.3-hectare (45-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Dereham in Norfolk. It is part of the Norfolk Valley Fens Special Area of Conservation.This area of spring fed fen and grassland in the valley of the River Tud has tufa hummocks formed by the deposit of calcium carbonate. It has an exceptionally rich fen community with a carpet of moss on wet slopes with many unusual plants. There are overgrown dykes with flora including narrow-leaved water-parsnip and water dropwort.There is access by a short track from Dumpling Green.

Buxton Heath is a 67.3-hectare (166-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Norwich in Norfolk. It is a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade 2, and part of the North Valley Fens Special Area of Conservation.This site has areas of dry acidic heath on glacial sands, but the main ecological interest lies in the mire along the valley of a small stream. There are a number of rare relict mosses, liverworts and fungi, and uncommon invertebrates include one species not previously recorded in Britain.The heath is managed by the Buxton Heath Wildlife Group.

North Tuddenham is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, North Tuddenham is 3 miles (4.8 km) east of East Dereham, and is close to the A47 road. The parish church is dedicated to St Mary.The villages name means 'Tuda's homestead/village'. It covers an area of 9.41 km2 (3.63 sq mi) and had a population of 305 in 121 households at the 2001 census, increasing to a population of 335 in 138 households at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the Upper Wensum Ward of Breckland District Council and the Elmham and Mattishall Division of Norfolk County Council. RAF Tuddenham is nearby: in 1944, a USAF B24 bomber plane on a training mission crashed at North Tuddenham, killing the eight crew members. A memorial plaque is in St Mary's church. The incident is also commemorated in a village flag, designed by a local school student, Esme Okan, in 2021.

Yaxham is a village and civil parish in centre of the English county of Norfolk. The parish includes the village of Yaxham, together with the neighbouring community of Clint Green and the hamlet of Brakefield Green. Together, they lie some 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Dereham and 20 miles (32 km) west of Norwich.The villages name origin is uncertain. 'Cuckoo homestead/village' or 'Geac's homestead/village'.The civil parish has an area of 6.64 km2 (2.56 sq mi) and in the 2001 census had a population of 677 in 290 households, the population increasing to 722 in 340 households at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Breckland.Yaxham Mill which includes the original windmill tower dating from 1860 is now a successful bed and breakfast business with a popular Indian Restaurant called Rani’s also on the site. There are several other holiday cottages for rent in and around the village as well as a range of small businesses, covering Complementary Therapies, IT, Photography, Podiatry, Public Relations and Social Housing. "Yaxham St. Peter" is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk. There is an Evangelical Congregational church in Clint Green. The Village is home to Yaxham CE VA Primary School. Yaxham railway station in the village is on the Mid-Norfolk Railway, a heritage railway running between the historic market towns of Wymondham and Dereham. The Yaxham Light Railway can also be found adjacent to the railway station.

Breckland is a local government district in Norfolk, England. Its council is based in Dereham, although the largest town is Thetford. The district also includes the towns of Attleborough, Swaffham and Watton, along with numerous villages and surrounding rural areas. The district derives its name from the Breckland landscape region, a gorse-covered sandy heath of south Norfolk and north Suffolk. The term "Breckland" dates back to at least the 13th century. The neighbouring districts are King's Lynn and West Norfolk, North Norfolk, Broadland, South Norfolk, Mid Suffolk and West Suffolk.

Whinburgh and Westfield is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It covers an area of 7.56 km2 (2.92 sq mi) and had a population of 307 in 134 households at the 2001 census. 10 years later it has a population (including Brakefield Green) of 342 according to the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of Breckland. The civil parish is located south of the nearby town Dereham and is formed from the two ancient parishes which centred round the churches of St Mary's Whinburgh and St Andrew's Westfield, and until 1894 the churches performed all the functions of local government. Norfolk was a county of small villages and parishes. The County of Norfolk Review Order, 1935, sought to rationalise this, and under this Westfield Parish was 'abolished' and merged with Whinburgh Parish. The name of the resultant parish was not changed from Whinburgh. For many years nothing was done about the parish's name, but on 2 August 1995, at the request of the Parish Council, Breckland Council sealed a 'Notice of the Change of Parish Name' and the parish then became Whinburgh and Westfield.
