Buckminster

The Church of St John the Baptist is a church in Buckminster, Leicestershire. It is a Grade I listed building.

Royal Air Force Buckminster or more simply RAF Buckminster is a former Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force station 2.25 miles (3.62 km) west of Colsterworth, Lincolnshire and 9.3 miles (15 km) north-east of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England.

Sproxton Quarry is a 5.4 hectares (13 acres) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-east of Sproxton in Leicestershire. It is a Geological Conservation Review site. The quarry exposes one of the most complete sections of the Middle Jurassic Lincolnshire Limestone Formation, together with the underlying Grantham and Northampton Sand Formations. It has rare ammonites. Sproxton Quarry is a Reference Section for the Grantham Formation.

Sewstern is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Buckminster, in the Melton district of east Leicestershire, England. It lies just south of Buckminster, with which it shares a primary school, situated between the two villages. It is 9 miles east of Melton Mowbray, 10 miles south of Grantham and 4 miles from the A1 at Colsterworth. It is the easternmost village in Leicestershire.

Sproxton () is a village and civil parish within the Borough of Melton in Leicestershire, England, close to the border with Lincolnshire. It has approximately 80 occupied dwellings (2021) and a population of 480, rising to 658 (including Coston, Saltby and Stonesby) at the 2011 census. The village and civil parish are not coterminous; the parish includes the villages of Sproxton, Saltby, Stonesby, Bescaby, and the former RAF Saltby. The River Eye runs through the parish. Nearby places are Waltham on the Wolds, Croxton Kerrial, Coston, Buckminster, and Skillington (in Lincolnshire). The Viking Way runs close by. Nearby is Sproxton Quarry Site of Special Scientific Interest. The 14th-century parish church of St Bartholomew, extended and restored in 1882 by architect Henry Woodyer, is a Grade II* listed building. There is evidence of Norman building in the west wall of the south aisle and the tower is 13th-century. The top part of the tower was rebuilt in the restoration of 1882. There is a Saxon cross in the churchyard - the only complete one in Leicestershire. A post mill stood at Sproxton. The mill was rebuilt in 1889 after it blew down and killed the miller. Wakes & Lamb of Newark rebuilt the mill using materials from the old mill and from one at Castle Bytham. It was wrecked by the gales of March 1916, but repaired. By 1920 it was out of use and was demolished in 1949 when owned by Mr T.A.Mount.

Coston is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Garthorpe in the Melton district, in the eastern part of Leicestershire, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 74.

Skillington is a village and civil parish in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2021 census was 314. It is situated 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west from the A1 road, 6 miles (10 km) south from Grantham, and is within 3 miles (5 km) of the Leicestershire border. Nearby villages include Buckminster, Sproxton, Stainby, Sewstern, Colsterworth and Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, with the latter the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton. The parish church is a Grade I listed building dedicated to Saint James. It dates from the 11th century and is built of limestone. The tower dates from the 13th century. The vestry was added in the 19th century. The font is 14th-century, and there is a 17th-century oak chest. Built into the north wall of the chancel are two 13th-century grave slabs, one re-used in memory of John Bowfield, who died in 1730. There are two stained glass windows to the memory of the Rev Charles Hudson, vicar, killed on the Matterhorn in 1865.

Saltby is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Sproxton, in the Melton borough of Leicestershire, England. It lies close to the River Eye and the border with Lincolnshire. There are approximately 65 properties (2021) within the village. In 1931 the parish had a population of 170. On 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished and merged with Sproxton. The village includes the former RAF Saltby. The 13th to 15th-century parish church of St Peter is a grade II* listed building. Nearby places are Waltham on the Wolds, Croxton Kerrial, Coston, Buckminster, and Skillington (in Lincolnshire).

Cribb's Meadow is a 4.2-hectare (10-acre) nature reserve east of Wymondham in Leicestershire. It is owned and managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, and is designated a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest under the name Cribb's Lodge Meadows. It is also a National Nature Reserve and a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade 2.The embankment of a disused railway runs through this ridge and furrow neutral meadow on boulder clay. The diverse flora includes adder's tongue fern, pepper saxifrage, hayrattle and green-winged orchid.There is access from Fosse Lane, and a footpath runs through the southern end.

Stainby is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Gunby and Stainby, in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It is situated 2 miles (3.2 km) west from the A1 road, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east from the Viking Way and the Leicestershire border, and 8 miles (13 km) south from Grantham. In 1921 the parish had a population of 117. Stainby is part of the civil parish of Gunby and Stainby, which is now administered as part of the Colsterworth district parishes. Stainby had been a parish in its own right until 1931. Adjacent villages include Buckminster, North Witham, Colsterworth, Gunby, Sewstern and Skillington. Stainby is on the B676 road which runs between Melton Mowbray (Buckminster Road) and Colsterworth (Colsterworth Road). The road is used by heavy goods vehicles from the nearby industrial estate at Sewstern and by vehicles heading from the Midlands towards East Anglia; an alternative route is through Wymondham and South Witham. There are no shops or public houses - the nearest are in Colsterworth. The church, on Main Road, is dedicated to St Peter. The former Stainby quarry is an event venue for vehicle off-roading.

Edmondthorpe and Wymondham railway station was a station in Wymondham, Leicestershire. It also served the small hamlet of Edmondthorpe. It was Midland Railway property but train services were operated by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway. It was closed in 1959 along with most of the M&GN. Nearby Whissendine railway station on the Leicester to Peterborough line was originally named Wymondham, but had been renamed by 1863.
