Civic Park Historic District

The Township of Kearsley was a civil township in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan organized April 19, 1839 from part of then Flint Township of its Township 7 north of range 7 sections 1-5 and 8-17. This is approximately the area encompassed today by N. Saginaw St. to the east, W. Pasadena Ave. to the north, west of Dye Rd. to the west, and Corunna Rd. to the south. Major Jonathan Kearsley was receiver in the United States land office in Detroit in the early 1800s from which all land in Genesee County was sold until 1836 when a Flint land office was opened. Kearsley Creek, Kearsley Community Schools, and one of the principal Flint city streets was named after him. Kearsley was given its own post office on August 25, 1841 with its initial postmaster Ogden Carke. The state legislature merged Kearsley Township back into Flint Township on March 7, 1843. Later, the Township's territory was absorbed into Genesee and Burton Townships and some of which became incorporated into the City of Flint. While the post office closed on January 11, 1867.

Flint Northern High School was a public secondary school located in Flint, Michigan. The original building "#1" was built in 1928 and demolished in the 1980s, after being the home of the Flint Academy. It was one of the high schools in the Flint Community Schools district along with Flint Northwestern High School (now Flint Junior High School) and Flint Southwestern Academy. It was closed in 2013 and reopened as Northern Academy. The Flint school board finally closed the school completely in 2014.

Flint Park was a theme park located in the city of Flint, Michigan, USA. The park was located next to Flint Park Lake (also known as Devil's Lake) on the north side of the city. The park, settled on 40 acres of land next to the 19-acre (77,000 m2) lake, opened on May 30, 1921 and closed down in 1961. The amusement park was torn down in late 1963 or early 1964.

The Whaley Children's Center is a private agency that focuses on caring for children and families in crisis. It is located in Flint, Michigan, neighboring Hurley Medical Center. Whaley Children's Center offers a wide variety of services to meet the basic needs of children and families in need.

Genesee County ( JEN-ə-see) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 406,211, making it the fifth-most populous county in Michigan. The county seat and population center is Flint (birthplace of General Motors). Genesee County is considered to be a part of the greater Mid Michigan area. The county was named after Genesee County, New York, which in turn comes from the Seneca word Gen-nis'-hee-yo, meaning "Beautiful Valley". Genesee County comprises the Flint, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. A major attraction for visitors is Crossroads Village, a living history village north of Flint. Genesee County is noted for having had the fossil of an ancient whale known as Balaenoptera Lacepede unearthed in Thetford Township during quarry work and estimated at 11,000 years old.

Hurley Medical Center is a teaching hospital serving Genesee, Lapeer, and Shiawassee counties in eastern Michigan since December 19, 1908. Situated in Flint, Michigan, it is a 457-bed public non-profit hospital.The emergency department is an ACS verified Level I Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. Hurley also has region's only Children's Hospital, Burn Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and Pediatric Emergency Department.

WKUF-LP (94.3 FM) is a student-run low-power campus radio station located in Flint, Michigan. It broadcasts at 100 watts. It is operated by Kettering University, formerly the General Motors Institute (GMI). It is paid for by student activity fees and a special fund created by the university.

Kettering University is a private university in Flint, Michigan. It offers bachelor of science and master’s degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and business fields. Kettering University undergraduate students are required to complete at least five co-op terms to graduate. Students gain paid work experience in a variety of industries with Kettering's more than 550 corporate partners, and graduate with professional experiences accompanying their degree.Kettering University is named after inventor and former head of research for General Motors, Charles F. Kettering. He was a distinguished inventor, researcher, and proponent of cooperative education.

McLaren Flint is a nonprofit, 378 bed tertiary teaching hospital located in Flint, Michigan. McLaren is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine's medical residency programs, including family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery and radiology. McLaren also maintains a hematology/oncology fellowship program in partnership with Michigan State University and is sponsoring a surgical oncology fellowship program. McLaren Flint is a subsidiary of McLaren Health Care Corporation. McLaren Northern Michigan placed among the top hospitals in Michigan and the nation with its combined facilities and offerings in Northern Michigan in 2023, earning a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Berston Field House opened in Flint, Michigan, in 1923 and has been the backdrop for the development of some of the city's top boxing and basketball talent as well as an important symbol of race in the city's history.Berston is one of several community centers throughout Flint that had traditionally offered recreation and health services to the community. While several have closed, Berston still houses one of the largest youth programs in a city that has had rapid population decline in the last thirty years.The original building included a library, swimming pool, gym and auditorium. In 1930, Berston became the first community center in the city to allow black residents to use its facilities and programs.

Chevy Commons is a park along the Flint River between Kettering University and downtown Flint, Michigan. Formerly the site of a Chevrolet factory widely known as "Chevy in the Hole", it has been redeveloped and revitalized since 2015 as event space and recreational areas with restored grasslands, meadows, wetlands, and woodlands. It also features green spaces, low-maintenance native plants, and walking trails. In total, the creation of Chevy Commons is expected to cost approximately $17.3 million, and it is part of a broader, $36.8-million project to change the landscape of the Flint River in Downtown Flint. The state of Michigan has committed to developing the site as a state park.

Swartz Creek is a 33.9-mile-long (54.6 km) creek located in the Mid Michigan area in the United States. It is a tributary of the Flint River and has two branches, the East and West Branch. Its name comes from the German word Schwarz, meaning "black", as the creek water is muddy.
