Bentley Colliery

Shaftholme is a small hamlet in South Yorkshire, England, in the parish of Arksey that is located half a mile north of Bentley and two miles north of Doncaster.

Tilts is a hamlet in the City of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, some 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Doncaster city centre and 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Askern. Aside from some farms, there is a moated site which is a scheduled monument.

Bentley with Arksey is a former civil parish (1866–1974) and urban district (1911–1974) adjacent to the town of Doncaster in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Toll Bar is a semi-rural hamlet in the City of Doncaster local government area, South Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the A19 road, and approximately 3 miles (5 km) north from the town of Doncaster, and adjacent to Bentley. Toll Bar had a population of 1,226 in the 2011 census.On 25 June 2007 the Ea Beck overflowed and flooded the village.The village school is Toll Bar Primary School. In 2014, about one third of its pupils had a Romany or Gypsy background. The school has been rated as good by Ofsted. Toll Bar also has a post office.

Bentley is a suburb of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England two miles north of the city centre. The population of the ward (also including Arksey, Shaftholme, Toll Bar and part of Scawthorpe) within the City of Doncaster at the 2021 census was 18,195. The Bentley built-up area subdivision had a population of 12,048.Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, the village was once owned by Edmund Hastings of Plumtree, Nottinghamshire, who had inherited it from his wife Copley's Sprotborough family. Hastings subsequently sold the manor to John Levett, a York lawyer born at High Melton who married the niece of Hastings's wife, who then conveyed it to Sir Arthur Ingram of York, High Sheriff of Yorkshire.A former mining village, it lies on the River Don. Bentley Colliery, which is now Bentley Community Woodland, closed in December 1993. Bentley and the nearby hamlet of Toll Bar were badly affected by floods in June 2007. The local parish church of St. Peter dates back to 1891. A second church, Church of SS Philip and James in the New Village area was dedicated in 1915 Bentley includes West End, New Village and Rostholme. Streets in Bentley include Cooke Street and High Street. During the 2019 United Kingdom floods residents of Bentley were asked to leave their homes after the area suffered flooding.

Arksey railway station, originally named Stockbridge and later Arksey and Stockbridge was a station which served the villages of Arksey and Stockbridge in the English county of South Yorkshire. It was served by trains on the main line between Doncaster and York.

Arksey is a village in the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It had an estimated population of 1,303 as of 2010. It was the birthplace of the children's writer Barbara Euphan Todd on 9 January 1890. Arksey has four satellite hamlets: Shaftholme, Tilts, Almholme and Stockbridge. The sey in Arksey means island in Old English, which is appropriate as the village is surrounded by marshland. Arksey is older than the Domesday Book.The Parish Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building, dating back to the 1120s.

Bentley railway station is a railway station that serves Bentley, South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Wakefield Line and is managed by Northern, who also provide all the passenger trains serving it. It was opened on 27 April 1992 by British Rail with financial assistance from the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. An earlier wooden halt, Bentley Crossing, built by the West Riding and Grimsby Railway, had previously existed at the same location but was closed by 1943.A common complaint is the lack of a footbridge between the two platforms. Passengers have to cross through the road barrier to get from one side to the other; therefore they may have to wait until trains have passed, and could miss their trains. The Wakefield Line is busy with London North Eastern Railway services and freight services as well as the Northern operations. Bentley is a popular commuting station for Leeds and Wakefield. It has a large car park for the size of the station and as such is a good station for Park and Ride to Doncaster. However possibly due to the footbridge issue, Adwick station is the dedicated park and ride station for Doncaster.

Bentley Crossing Halt was a small railway station on the West Riding and Grimsby Railway line between Doncaster and Carcroft & Adwick-le-Street. It was a workman's halt built in 1914 to serve the community of Bentley, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England at the point where the main line crosses the road through the village on the level. The road links Bentley with York Bar. The station consisted of wooden platforms with wooden buildings to act as waiting shelter and office. The station was closed around 1943 and little can now be seen of the buildings (a regular fault with wooden built stations), however the Bentley (South Yorkshire) railway station was built on the same site.

Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve is a 77-hectare (190-acre) nature reserve located south-west of Thorpe in Balne, north of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. The reserve is managed and maintained by a team of volunteers under the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust as well as Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council.The reserve shares its name with the coal-fired power station which occupied the adjacent land prior to its closure in 1994 and the demolition of its remaining cooling towers in 2012. The site is on an area of lowland susceptible to flooding (floodplain) by the River Don, thus creating an area of marshland on which the reserve sits (hence the appended "marsh").

The North Doncaster Chord (also known as the Shaftholme Flyover) is a railway connection (chord) between the freight only lines between Hatfield & Stainforth railway station (the Skellow line) and the Askern branch line, in South Yorkshire, England. The line was built to allow heavy freight trains, mostly from the Port of Immingham, to access the power stations in the lower Aire Valley without the need for them to use the East Coast Main Line (ECML) and creating slower line speeds for faster passenger trains. The chord meant the creation of 2 miles (3.2 km) of new railway and the building of Shaftholme Viaduct, which straddles the East Coast Main Line.

Almholme is a hamlet in South Yorkshire, England. It was in the parish of Arksey, and is now in Bentley with Arksey unparished area. The term 'holme' relates to the hamlet being located in a low and level pasture near water; the River Don is to the east and to the north is Thorpe Marsh Nature Reserve.
